This place is unique, so meaningful, it must be experienced. No videos or audio can describe the feelings you will have here in person.

DO NOT MISS. What an honor to have visited the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. It was an experience we will never forget. We were very moved by the beautiful, serene,
dedicated cemetery to those who willing sacrificed their lives for those they would never know.

The coast of France is beautiful and as you approach the parking area for the American Cemetery at Colleville a deep felling of sadness immediately hit me. This was the third time visiting the Normandy region. I am a teacher and I travel with students annually and to witness students encounter this site for the first time is always gut-wrenching. When in the area, I feel it is also important to visit Le Cambre, a German cemetery with eerie black tombstones. This site is the final resting place of over 20,000 German soldiers who were laid to rest in groups of three and four. A visit to the beaches and museums along the shores is also worthwhile.

I first visited the cemetery during the 50th anniversary remembrance of the D-Day landings, and returned via a shore excursion from a cruise ship that stopped in Cherbourg. Things have changed, and not entirely for the better. Our time was limited, and it was impossible to enter the Visitor Center thanks to the airport-style security line that stretched outside the door. Hopefully that will abate as the TSA begins its slow return to reality back home. But nothing can detract from the visible evidence of the sacrifices made by the U.S. in 1944. It's even more humbling to consider that this is just one U.S. cemetery among hundreds scattered around the world. It's unfortunate that based on snatches of overheard conversations, many of the younger visitors (and not just the Americans) appear to know almost nothing about the Normandy landings or even of WWII itself. Nothing new about that, I guess.
