“An excellent property near Pozzallo, Sicily”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

Marsa Sicla is a holiday village (resort) situated about 20 minutes drive from the small town of Pozzallo, which is also the nearest point to the neighbouring island of Malta (90 minutes away by fast ferry service). So one can kill two birds with one stone and visit two central Mediterranean islands within the same holiday. Customer service at this resort is excellent, the beautiful gardens are well kept and extensive, with the bungalows well furnished and in excellent condition. I would recommend staying at Marsa Sicla on half board basis for two main reasons. The first is that Marsa Sicla offers an excellent cuisine, and one will certainly not lack for a wide variety of Sicilian specialities. Their pasta, pizza and buffet are also of a very good quality. The second is that this holiday village is rather far from the nearest town, and, unless one has a car, or is prepared to take a taxi for every meal, it is far more practical and convenient to be there on half board basis. Marsa Sicla offers a beautiful and very large swimming pool which is Olympic length at its longest. The tranquil gardens are extremely well kept, and a beautiful thalasso spa, as well as a health center nestle among the trees. A free shuttle service runs between the complex and it's own private beach, which is superb. I personally liked this resort so much that I have booked Marsa Sicla again and should be visiting a second time this year in August.

Room Tip: Since this is a self catering property, it is recommended that one takes one or two extra towels bec...

We have traveled the world and the best service we have ever received from any hotelier came from Patricia, who runs Marsa Sicla. Her English is very good, and her desire to please and to make your stay as best as it can be is second to none. She will literally run to get what it is you might need, and then she will apologize for not getting it to you sooner. The rest of her staff reflects her dedication and warmth and service.

The cafe opens at 8:00 AM and there is a nice breakfast and espresso and cappuccino. The pizzas are the dinner mainstay at the restaurant and they are very, very good. The view from the pool deck and other spots is stunning. The setting, inside of a lemon tree grove, a hundred feel above sea level and half a mile from the ocean is perfect. The facility is very well maintained and well made. There were two terraces to our unit and it was all very romantic and comfortable. There are excellent sports and fitness facilities, as well.

Keep in mind that this is essentially a summer and a beach place, so the ceramic tile floors are perfect for cleaning and for keeping cool and for the wet and the sand. But it also means that there can not be the top line in luxury. Also, because it is summer relaxation and a self-contained beach place, the other thing is that you will need a car, if you want to do anything but hang around.. We had a car and we actually used Marsa Sicla as a base to visit Siracusa, Agrigento, Portopallo, Modica, and we even took a day trip (two and a half hours) to Palermo.

The Lampara Ristorante, on the road to Pozgallo has an excellent seafood menu. The town of Sampieri is adorable. Pozgallo has everything you need, gas, food, etc. And here is a key: the entrance to the autostrade is at Rosolino, about twenty five minutes away. If you know anything about the excellence of Italian highway engineering, you know how I can say that we got to Palermo in two and a half hours. It also means that the rest of Sicily is even closer. Once you get to the autostrade...

Oh, and another tip: Italy/Sicily in the off season? Hell, Yeah! We had everything to ourselves, the beach, the restaurants, the museums, the tourist attractions.

(I would say that this place merits a rating of a four, but since the service is a six, thanks to Patricia, then it merits a five.)

Room Tip: The top floor rooms and the seaside rooms offer the better views. No room is really bad.

Customer service here was fantastic; Patricia will help you with whatever you need and she speaks English. The resort was fine with some exceptions: heat wasn't turned on till Nov. 15....it was darn cold!!! They brought us an extra blanket but we paid to stay there and they should provide heat; it was in the low 50's at night. The unit didn't have any dish soap or sponge to clean the dishes. However, there was a big sign indicating that if you left dirty dishes, they would charge you....this didn't make much sense. The unit has a washing machine but no dryer; there's a rack to hang your wet clothes. One other disconcerting thing was the resort was very nice, but the front of the units were not maintained at all. The grass wasn't mowed, there were weeds everywhere and the bushes were so overgrown on the walkway to the unit, that you had about a 3" opening to walk thru; are owners not paying their maintenance fees???

We chose this resort because we wanted to relax and do not much. Marsa Sicla seemed to offer this.

Our apartment was spacious and clean, with lots of patios / balconies. The kitchenette is small but reasonable (no kettle, just a percolator). The resort facilities are good, the large pool is beautiful and tempting while the nearby beach is very clean, with the shuttle service from the resort more than adequate. We played tennis on the very acceptable court.

The restaurant is good too, although the lunch menu offers more choice than the evening one. The pizzas are delicious and huge! Staff in restaurant, bar and reception are friendly and helpful. English isn't widely spoken but people know enough to enable you to get by.

One tiny word of warning, the resort really is in the middle of nowhere. The nearest town Sampieri, is tiny with only one ATM which was broken when we were there. The next town, Marina de Modica, also boasts just the one ATM and when we visited in October, the place was pretty much shut for the season. The walk from Marina de Modica back to Marsa Sicla is along a beautiful sweeping beach. Although there are mountain bikes at the resort, you really need a car if you want to explore. The mini-market on the site stocks enough for a week, but bear in mind, it closes at lunchtime until late afternoon (as do most things in Sicily).

As mentioned, we were there in October, when it was hot enough to just wear a bikini on the beach or by the pool. It also means it was hot enough for mosquitos, I would advise taking all the usual precautions!

Travelled in September with my Bfriend and his friends. ( Cooking weekend in Sicily). Lovely complex, great pool and lovely seaside. Beach is 1km away ( but free shuttle bus every 10 mins). Great food and smiling stuff. If you look for a quiet weekend...then I would highly recommend. Clean complex. If you want to explore the area then you need to hire a car. ( We visited Modica, Isbla, Ragus and Pozzallo)
