“Beautiful resort, but not the place for young families”
Reviewed June 12, 2010

Le Vasa is a very beautiful resort - with gorgeous, huge, well appointed fales, an amazing view out to the aquamarine sea, a lovely pool and nice meals. if you're looking for a place to go for your honeymoon, or a weeks retreat from the world - this is the place.

If, however, you've got young kids, or you're looking for a Samoan cultural experience, look elsewhere. The hotel is not really set up for kids - there are hazards everywhere, no highchairs, the design of the pool makes it hard for young ones to frolic in (theres no shallow end), and the beach is more mud than sand. In terms of a Samoan experience - you'll stay in amazing luxury fales, but beyond that there is not much particularly Samoan about this resort. You can pay to go on an (expensive) tour of the island or for other cultural experiences.

While the restaurant, bar and maid staff were very friendly and helpful, the check-in was cursory, and was markedly less hospitable than other places we have stayed in Samoa. We felt as though we had checked into a nameless, faceless large commercial hotel - which is very unusual in Samoa. We also felt a certain sense of disdain - possibly linked to the fact we had a child with us.

That being said...

The grounds were gorgeous - well-maintained gardens skirt the amazing view, complete with coconut palms which have had the coconuts removed so as not to surprise a visitor with a trip to emergency at the local hospital. Strategically placed hammocks make the most of the view, and the pool is refreshing and well-placed, with views out to sea wherever you sit. The fales are really something special - comfy beds, lots of space, a living area with an extra bed to recline and read on. Each fale has a balcony which looks out to sea, a fridge, coffee and tea making facilities, and nice bathrooms.

Nice as the hotel is, it was expensive compared to other places in Samoa. Room rates are at the high end, and food while delicious, was really expensive - which is tough as there are no alternatives outside the hotel. Apia is a 45 minute drive away.

Overall - I would recommend this hotel to couples looking for a getaway, for whom cultural interest is not so important; families and those seeking a bit of interaction with the warm, hospitable Samoan people should go elsewhere.

Le Vasa resort is one of those quaint getaways secluded from the hustle of Samoa. Here one can enjoy Serene coastal vistas and waterfronts, friendly service from employees and staff, great food, fishing excursions, and cozy rooms. All that said, it is important to remember that this resort is closer to a "mom and pop" retreat than a corporate and disheartened development. The sense of welcome is astounding. I recommend this resort to anyone wishing to escape to the pacific.

Apart from being a long way from Apia (a 50 Tala taxi ride) Le Vasa was a very welcome upgrade to our previous accommodation on Manono Island. Our fale was right on the beach, with a great view of the reef and distant surf. The rooms and ensuite were very clean and comfortable.

We found the Staff to be very pleasant and helpful possibly because we were usually the only guests. The restaurant had a very limited selection of dishes, prepared from frozen New Zealand products - I don't think we actually had any Samoan food at Le Vasa. The menu and bar items were quite expensive and people with large appetites would find the meals to be inadequate.

I was looking forward to getting in some fishing on the resort's boat, but unfortunately it was out of commission for our entire 8 day stay. That really limited our options, since there is not a lot to do there. Swimming is possible but the water is murky and apparently there are plenty of stone fish and stingrays which could really spoil the holiday.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Le Vasa, even with the excessive pricing at the restaurant and bar and the expensive fale. Watch your bill for the little "extras" that get charged to your room too - most of which would be free elsewhere.

As we were flyng home mid morning we decided to have a night in Upolu after a week in Savaii ( at the wonderful Savaiian Hotel, cheap and friendly, see review). Decided to splash out and try Le Vasa. We were so disappointed!.
The two women running the resort were very off hand and certainly not what you'd expect in an expensive hotel. The local Samoan staff were lovely. The pool is tiny compared to Aggies Resort where we have stayed previously, and you can't swim in the lagoon due to stingers. The rooms are quite good with a lovely outlook, but unless you want to lie by the pool all day there is little to do. The food was fine but again quite pricy compared to other places we stayed.

I have travel all round the world and this place was a joke ,This resort is set on white smaly mud .it is not nice sand beach ,as they sort of make out on there web site .it is owned and run by Americans and has no Samoan felling .it is so expensive for what you get .The pool is very basic and is not Private and every one from the restaurant and office looks at the pool .
as soon as we arrived we realised that we did not want to stay here .we were greeted by the owners and managers and new that this place was not organised..and then realised that the beach was a muddy smelly beach ,We wanted to leave early but they would not give us our money back so we decided to stay ,every thing was so expensive ,the night before we were to leave .they asked me if we wanted a wake up call .and yes we did .that would have given us time to pay the balance and get to the ferry .how ever there was no wake up call and we were running late ,so on leaving I told the american man what I thought of his ways and resort .and as they had my creidt card details to pay the ballance on me card .and we left .next thing you know .He come down to the ferry abussing me and rang the police and we were taken away .(He tryed to make out that we had taken of with out paying )so after he had said his bit the police .I had my chance,.The police were so apologetic and escorted us fast back to the ferry,Bewere this is not the place to go to if you are wanting a tropical breck .It is the worst resort I have been to in the south picfifc

In summary - over priced, rude management who pestered up to plug the resort and overcharged for everything. There is much better to be found in Samoa.

Based on various advice we got from Tripadvisor, we stayed at a range of hotels over an 8 day stay in Samoa. The idea was to get progressively better as the holiday went on, so we started in Virgin Cove for a couple of nights, then Le Lagoto (for which I will right a separate review - but it was awesome) and spent the last two nights at Le Vasa in what was meant to be the highlight of the trip. So, on leaving Le Lagoto, which was a little cheaper, we were full of anticipation for what Le Vasa had to offer....and sadly we were extremely disappointed. The place is run by two ladies - one American and one Kiwi - both of whom we found to be fairly rude and only interested in getting us to plug their resort on tripadvisor - which we would have been happy to do were it not or the fact that the place fails to deliver. On the positives there is a great pool and the accommodation is pretty good but that is it. There is a restaurant with good food, but only 2-3 options (which even a budget place like Virgin Cove surpasses) and forget about getting out on the reef. The water is silty and murky thanks to a nearby river estuary but clearer further out. To access the reef further out you can hire a boat...but that will cost you more than the price of a room for the night e.g. hundreds of dollars to go out in a tinny. We felt that given the cost of the resort, and the lack of natural amenities that you would think that they would put something like that on for free or a nominal charge. Anyway, the main gripe we had was with the rude and off hand management – the Samoan staff themselves were lovely – and the over promise of what you could actually do within the resort. If all you want to do is sit by a pool all day then this is the resort for you – but you can do so much better elsewhere in Samoa for less money. Why sit by a pool all day when there are stunning reefs to see, turtles to swim with and friendly Samoan operated and run resorts where you get a feel for the wonderful Samoan hospitality rather than abrupt pestering for plugs on trip advisor whilst they fleece you for the privilege!
