“So-so Temple near nice waterfalls.”
Review of Bogyungsa Temple

Bogyungsa Temple
Reviewed August 21, 2012

There are better temples to see in South Korea. But this one is near a series of waterfalls. If you're prepared to brave the throngs of people clogging the trails you'll enjoy the scenery. Be aware there are ALOT of people going up and down the trails. More often than not there are traffic jams along the way.

A long (at least 50 minutes) but cheap local bus ride on the number 510 from Pohang takes you to this charming bhuddist temple, in a peaceful rural location where the bus terminates. The modest entrance charge (W2,500 as far as I can recall) also allows access to a long riverside walkway up through scenic gorges into the surrounding hills. As you go, you pass numerous waterfalls and a couple of freshwater pools where it's possible to take a cooling dip. Most of the walk is shaded by trees, so it's quite possible, even in the heat of summer, to progress steadily upwards. We got as far as the 7th waterfall (and the second large pool) before turning back.
There are many restaurants and souvenir shops between the bus stop and the temple.

A nice scenic mountain temple. Taxi fare from town to the temple was about 30,000won. Including waiting time and return trip, total fare was about 75,000won. By accident, we visited on Buddha's Birthday, and a significant ceremony/festival was occuring at the temple - so the serenity was slightly modified with 6,000 people there! Still, worth a look for a diversion from Pohang.

The temple lies among the mountains and makes it look like some jewel in the middle of nature. It’s not very big and gorgeous as the other popular ones but maybe the peaceful atmosphere around here seduced us. They allow taking photo in this temple which is not a common allowance in similar religious places in Korea.
