“Quiet oasis in busy Chaweng”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2013

A friendly resort at the quieter end of South Chaweng, easy walking distance to main shopping area. I had a pool view villa. Was 10 paces from the pool. Surprisingly was very quite after dark. It may have been that there weren't groups of young people staying. Rooms very clean bedding changed daily, spacious, after all who stays in their hotel room in KS. Buffet breakfast plentiful, a couple of the cooked items changed daily which was a nice touch. Eggs cooked to your preference. Right on the beach, the restaurant has a good menu and the food is very good. I only had Thai food, deserves better support. Friendly staff. Recommended for famillies and those seeking a relaxing holiday.

This is a warning to anyone who goes to this hotel.
both my daughters received electric shocks whilst showering, they both suffered problems with their hands and arms for some 24 hours after their incident, there is a problem here which is serious and needs attention.
The whole plumbing system became live after a thunderstorm, even the maintenance man would not touch it and advised them to get out of the room, his circuit tester was glowing brighter than Blackpool illuminations.
The Manager of the hotel avoided me thereafter and not even an apology, although the reception staff were very nice about things, and we were given a change of room immediately.

Now the nitty Gritty. I am not a fan of the Thai Islands, they are not good value for money, and everyone is out to rip you off, it is a fact.

This resort hotel is no exception, for what they are the rooms are overpriced. nothing will change because people will still go to Koh Samui and need a room no matter what, however these quaint little bungalows by the beach are what they are and that is basic. Our bathroom roof kept lifting up and slamming down when the wind blew, despite reporting it nothing was done. The roof leaked when it rained and ran down the walls. It is also a breeding ground for mosquitoes which seem to be immune to any form of spray or deterrent.

Breakfast was just passable, if you are happy to have cereal and eggs, anything else was plastic looking and tasting, and run on a budget that maximises profit and minimises customer service.

Nice pool if there is no one else around, but more than a dozen people in it and there is not much room for any fun, also not enough sun loungers for the number of people that it can accommodate.

The location is straight onto the beach, it would be nice if they could clean the beach up, as per typical Thai beaches, no one seems to want to take any responsibility for making it nice, so fag ends everywhere and litter. A little thought could make it a lot nicer.

As for Koh Samui, well yes it is a pretty little Island, and just remember it is an Island because the taxi drivers know they have the monopoly and will rip you off for as much as they can get, everything carries a premium price.

If you like Islands and don't care about the cost, then this is probably the best one to go to. But remember, try and find a decent hotel and take a circuit tester kit with you!

Room Tip: Don't be fooled into the better rooms by the pool, because they leave the lights on all night ar...

Baan Talay is a lovely little resort. We arrived late as our flight had been delayed, luckily the helpdesk at Bangkok airport helped us to let them know, and security was waiting for us even though reception had closed. We were originally given a room close to the road, which we found a little noisy, but they changed it for us the next morning, no problems.
The rooms are clean and everything worked just fine. The bed was big and comfortable, the safe worked, the shower was good. People say the bathrooms smell bad sometimes, but this is a problem of the islands waste water system, and not of the hotel. A lot of low-lying areas have this problem all over the world.
The rooms are plain, but peaceful and attractive, and the aircon worked well. The rooms are cleaned every day if you request, or you can have your "do not disturb" sign up. You get 2 bottles of drinking water everyday, and clean beach towels are provided along with a bag to carry them in. The beach infront of the hotel is very nice, the water is warm, it gets deep very gradually and the sand is clean and soft. There are loungers for hotel guests, or you can lie on the loungers at the pool, which is stunning. There is even an area for guests to lie next to the restaurant, looking at the sea.
We hired a scooter from reception, it was very affordable and they also arranged our taxi to take us further on our journey. We found all the staff to be very friendly and they helped us with everything they could. I don't understand why some people say there is no wifi because we had wifi in our room, as well as at the pool area and the dining area. Just ask at reception for the password.
We were worried that this hotel was too far south and might be far from everything- not so. Infact, the 2 best places to eat are very close, namely the Chaweng Walking street and also, a bit further north, Ninja Crepes. The walking street also has a market at night where you can shop for clothing and shoes, and a lot of their stuff is cheaper than the shops in the main road. There are many stalls to buy food from, and everything is catered for, there are even burgers and chips, and also great smoothie stalls.
The breakfast buffet is limited, but you must take into account this is a small hotel. The food was always fresh and very tasty. You can choose to have omelette or fried eggs etc at the egg station, or eat the more traditional fruits and warm dishes on offer. There is various juices or coffee or tea available, as well as pastries and breads.
The restaurant overlooks the beach and they also do lunch specials, and cocktails.
We had a great stay here, and if its value for money you want, this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the road, it can be a bit noisy although it quietens down later at night.

I've been visiting Samui once a year for roughly 12 years, back when the island was flooded with bungalows, quite a change from what it is today. I've stayed in the low end fan bungalows to some of the higher end hotels, but I've got to say, Baan Talay has been my favorite resort. The rooms are not huge, but are definitely very charming. The pool is well maintained and the staff is quite friendly, minus 1 of the girls at the front desk ( the others were very helpful and friendly ) who is quite rude and shouted " NO " in the worst tone to my gf when she asked if there were any rooms that had a bath tub. The staff at the restaurant are as nice as anyone can be, though the breakfast is not a huge spread, the items that they do serve is quite tasty and fresh, the lemon grass juice and fresh yogurt / muesli mix was very refreshing to have in the morning. The egg bar and warm foods are quite good as well. Though the location is a bit on the south end of Chaweng, renting a motorbike is the way to go if you want to quickly get to the busier part of the strip. Despite the hiccup with the one receptionist, I would definitely stay here again. It appears that many trip advisor write ups complain about this one specific receptionist, everyone else on this compound is very friendly.

I have visited Koh Samui 13 times already. Overall I have stayed there for over 12 months and on so many beaches around the Island and so many hotels and bungalows.
Bann Talay for me was just perfect!! It is located on the more peaceful side of Chaweng beach yet not too far from all the restaurants, shops and bars. The rooms are new and clean, the stuff is friendly and professional, food is good and it just a very good deal for Samui.
Loved it and will definately come back!!

Receptionist wasn't the most friendly and helpful. When we arrived she had no smile. A group of 4 of us booked one double and one twin room. The two single males requested the twin room and the couple requested the double. Receptionist mixed it up and brought us to the wrong rooms. Told her she got it wrong and she seemed frustrated and not very helpful. She insisted this is what we requested. We realised the couple were taken to the twin room so we just switched the rooms around ourselves. Later asked the same receptionist about the ferry to Koh Tao for the next leg of our trip and she replied "I don't know" and did not even try to assist us. This receptionist had poor attitude and just didn't want to be there. A different receptionist came for new shift and she was very friendly and helpful. Even helped us book restaurants and organise the transport to the ferry to Koh Tao and the ferry tickets.

The room appeared new but was very plain and small. Tiled floors and one tile had a huge crack. We requested twin bed setup. One bed was a double but was acutally two single beds put together and could feel the split down the middle. Air Con was very nice and strong though. The bathoom was very very hot due to lack of ventillation and had a stench so we kept that door closed. Our security safe stopped working and we couldn't open it. But that was fixed with a battery replacement.

From the outside the resort was great though. Pool was really amazing and the beach is just outside. The cafe was nice (great juices and tried some entrees also very nice) and you can lie down on the couches in the cafe overlooking the beach. Breakfast was included and was average without much variety.

Two desktops with free internet could be used in the lobby. No WIFI.

We hired scooters from across the road. $5000B deposit or passport deposit. Returned the scooters after without fuss. Hightly recommend scooter hire.

Fab bunglows, clean, near centre of Chaweng but not right in middle of it. About 10 minute walk from centre. Loads of bars and restaurants around it and very near a small night market. The one's overlooking beach have hammocks but seats rights outside window for sunbathing so might get noisy.Fab pool, just a really place i would go back to.

Room Tip: Get a room over looking garden as it is quieter.
