“Bit of a dissapointment”
Reviewed January 21, 2014

We checked in a night before and after our luxury villa, arriving at 8pm after a 10 hour flight to realise our booking was not in the system, they kept us waiting for over a hour to sort the issue out which i did not appreciate. In the end they upgraded us the first night to a bungalow, which was fabulous, nice big room. The pool was ok nothing special, and great spot right on the beach.
The second time around we checked in on our way home we stayed in a standard room, very basic and the loud music from downstairs was to be heard all night.
Overall not too bad, i would recommend spending a little more to a bungalow.

Room Tip: stay in a bungalow and you will enjoy your room, although the beds are particularly hard.

I visited Koh Samui with 4 other friends in December 2013. We arrived having spent a week in sunny Goa and 2 days in hot Bangkok to a tropical storm. We were obviously slightly deflated by this and on arrival to the hotel, we were met by a lady who took great pleasure in seeing our sadness of the weather. Not only did she laugh at our reaction but she was incredibly rude and demanded up front payment for all the nights. Rather than attempting to sell the positives of the hotels, they proceeded to relay a series of rules and the icing on the cake was when they said "oh and you cannot go on the beach or swim in the sea". You can imagine that all our hearts sank at this point, which caused her and some of her colleagues even more joy. Rather than explaining that the summer season was just starting, they mocked us for arrivign during "rainy season" and led us to believe that our following 2 weeks on the Thai islands would be a wash out. This led to us sitting in the lobby and actually considering leaving Thailand to a warmer destination.

Fortunately, common sense kicked in and we decided to make the "best of a bad situation" and stay and explore what we could. We had a double room each and although the decor is basic, the rooms had a nice feel to them and certainly made you feel as though you were by the seaside. The swimming pool is clean and the hotel massages are very good.

We were pleased that on the following day the sun came out and the new set of staff we met were a lot more accomodating and friendly. They advised us of local places to visit and eat and we really started to enjoy our time in Koh Samui.

It was a shame that our initial introduction to the hotel and its staff was so sour as it left a bitter taste in what was otherwise a pleasurable stay.

I would recommend the following.

Restaurant:
1. Mit Samui. Located just off the strip, a local thai restaurant full of Thai people where dishes are all around 50THB and the quality is exceptional
2. Korean Buffet BBQ in Fishermans Village (a tai ride away). All you can eat Hot Pan BBQ for 140THB per person. Amazing food, really original concept and a lot of fun for a group of people.

Reggae Bar:
1. Rock Bar (situated between Grandfather and Grandmother Rock in Lamai). Possibly the coolest place I have ever been to. A 2 floor tree house hidden in rock formation with private beach. Smokers paradise which playes Reggae and Dub until the early hours of the morning.
2. Lipsmackers Beach Bar (situated on Chaweng beach behind Al's Resort). Friendly staff who serve amazing cocktails (try Sex on Fire), will accomodate smoking needs while looking straight out onto beach

We stayed at this hotel from December 19 to 23, 2013.

PROS
-has a restaurant in the hotel facing the ocean
-looks clean and well maintained, in sharp contrast to the area in which the hotel is situated (i.e. a slum)
-within walking distance of many restaurants, massage businesses, convenience stores, money changers, souvenir shops, tailors

CONS
-no elevator
-cannot buy fruits or vegetables at any of the stores nearby although there are 7-11 stores selling water, drinks and junk food
-nearby tailors have sample suits demonstrating that you will get a suit tailor made that is terrible by western standards
-we got a room facing the street, which is a view of a slummy neighborhood
-the entire neighborhood looks like a slum. Streets outside were filthy. Sidewalks either only 1 meter wide or less and in some areas no sidewalk

Room Tip: There is no elevator in the hotel. So if you have knee problems or don't like climbing stairs...

As a traveller with many years of experience in Thailand and a return visitor to Koh Samui I was very dissapointed with the front line staff at this hotel. We had booked on line several weeks before after deciding to stay at the quiet end of the beach and this was the first visit to the Chaweng Cove hotel.
There was some confusion with what the booking agency had paid the hotel and was probably a genuine mistake but poor communication to all parties. That happens, but the attitude of the reception staff was very unprofessional and uncaring. it seemed that they were in competition with each other to see who could be the rudest. Had money not changed hands we would have moved elsewhere.
I first visited Thailand in 1971 and have enjoined countless hoildays and business trips since, but this was the worst example of Reception staff I have experienced.
A member of the pool bar staff also let the side down when he asked if he could keep the change from the bill!
The housekeeping staff were however a credit and the other members could perhaps learn from them.
The hotel itself is OK. The basic rooms at the front overlook the service road and can be a bit noisey at night but they are clean and of a good standard. The bathrooms especially stood out with great showers.
The pool and beach rooms looked very good and the three pools and sun areas good for relaxing. The beach area is a bit small but it was not busy at the time of our visit.
Nothing special in the food department but just outside there are several very good value eating places.
Chaweng Cove management: please remind your staff that one reason why so many people return to Thailand is because of the friendliness of the people there.

Room Tip: Pay a bit extra and stay near the pools.

We stayed in the Chaweng Cove Resotel ( as it was known) a few years back now on a 6 week tour of Thailand, and we stayed here in Koh Samui for around 6 days of the trip. We had the pleasure of staying in the Chaweng Cove resotel, and i would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone. Working in the travel industry i have stayed in many of the world's best hotels, and yes the Chaweng Cove is not one of the greatest, however for the prices we paid we had a truly wonderful stay. The rooms were kept very clean, pool area was great and immediate access to the beach was also great. We had a beach front villa, so could step out each day directly to the beach. Well worth the few $'s to upgrade if possible!

Room Tip: Go for the beachside villas!

Chaweng Cove Beach resort represents reasonable value in Thailand's expensive strip of hotels and resorts. It's plusses are nice beach-frontage on one of the nicer parts of Chaweng beach, a major plus. The sun lounges and mats are definitely showing their age though! The breakfast buffet is acceptable but nothing amazing (they never are) and they grounds are neat and tidy. The rooms are showing their age, we were in the block and it looked quite dated but did have ocean glimpses which is nice. I think I would have rated it higher if I hadn't checked out the competition, there are a lot nicer hotels on Chaweng beach, it just depends how much you want to spend.

I think the resort represents good value for money but that's about it. The reception staff seemed disinterested some of the time, we tried to book an ATV tour through them and they told us to do it ourselves, this didn't leave a good taste in my mouth. I think next time I might pay a little extra and stay somewhere nicer and maybe a little closer to the action.

Room Tip: I think the bungalows are nicer than the aging hotel block

Was good value for Money! Grounds are nice you have a private part of the beach ! Location is good on the main strip but far enough to get away from all the Night life if you need to chill and relax! Breakfast was good enough not the best but was still good. There Is a Gym but its pretty small, you have all you need just outside from hiring bikes / massages / banks to exchange $ / food/ convenience store etc. Even a van that sells Shots and drinks for cheap haha! If you want a nice clean place that has all you need but you dont want to spend a lot of $ this is good for an average resort! Good bang for Buck!
