“Very friendly”
Reviewed January 30, 2013

This was a last minute booking (from elsewhere in Thailand). We be recommended to stay in a different resort nearby hotel but, as that was full, I simply looked for one nearby, and that was the Chaba. We booked a room in the lake wing (the Ocean wing - and, as the name suggests, the ocean - is across the other side of quite a busy road. The hotel is a very brief drive, perhaps 15 minutes, from the airport.

On first arrival we were very effusively welcomed. The guest relations manager even made a balloon dog for our small son, which made his day! And, this positive, attentive attitude continued throughout our stay. We never had to ask for our room key, they recognized us and remembered our room number and simply gave us the key as we approached the reception desk. This is one of the friendliest hotels hotels you could wish for.

The room was a reasonable size with two mattresses together to form a double bed. Although a a bit faded, the room was clean and in good repair. The room had a lake view, but it was not a particular attractive lake and we found the busy road with it vendors far more interesting to watch! The room was cleaned daily and bottles of fresh drinking water supplied. The bathroom was small but adequate and everything worked well. fully functional .

We ate only one meal in the hotel, a lunch, and it was interesting to watch the food being brought across the busy road that bisects the two wings of the hotel! The food itself was very average and we didn't eat in the hotel again. They do specialty nights where there is often a buffet menu that allows you to sample a specific style of food. This sounded quite attractive and we did book that on one occasion, but when we turned up, after delaying our usual dining time because of the start time (no mean feat with a young child), we were told that as it was outdoors and rain was expected, the event was cancelled! That did quite explain why we were still offered seats outside and the standard menu . . . we declined and went to a nearby eatery.

The resort as a whole doesn't really seem to get going till late morning, so if you are early birds (like our son makes us), be prepared as there is very little open outside of the hotel. So, be warned, breakfast options are very limited if you don't have it included in your tariff. By afternoon it starts to get busy and by the evening it is very, very busy. The beach is excellent and there is a good swimming pool. So if you like beach / swimming pool holidays this is certainly a good place for you. There are also a number of other bars and restaurants open in the afternoon and evening.

Room Tip: The ocean wing looks the best option!

The hotel itself was good but nothing particularly impressive. The rooms were of a good size (especially given there were 3 sharing) and were cleaned daily. We stayed on the ocean wing which was nearer the beach. Some of the staff were very attentive, especially the porter who helped me out when I lost some travel documents. The reception let the hotel down as they were often rude and unhelpful.

Very central location but far enough out so there is little noise at night.

When we asked to stay on an extra night, the hotel gave us a very high quote so I would suggest booking online instead as we got it almost half the price.

Room Tip: Go for the ocean wing to be nearer to the beach!

Just returned at the end of November2012 from 12 x nights at the Chaba Samui Resort in the Ocean Wing. Having stayed at the sister hotel Chaba Cabana in April 2012 I thought a comparison would be worthwhile. Firstly this hotel is in the centre of the town which is good for shops, restaurants and bars but no good for trying to get a good nights sleep with noise from live music which some nights went on until 3.30am.
As recommended we stayed on the top 4th floor near the pool and beach front, but this did not avoid the noise at night. The room was of reasonable size with good decor and cleanliness, small bathroom similar to the Chaba Cabana but with slightly more modern decor.
As this building is oblong, starting at the main road and continuing towards the sea,all bedrooms are on the left hand side with balconies facing tropical high growth trees, meaning no views unless you are on the 4th floor, the open corridors are on the right hand side of the building. At the end of this building facing the pool and sea are 3 x beautiful suites on floors 2 - 4. However because the restaurant is underneath on floor 1 there is a large extractor fan running from kitchen on floor 1 to the roof which is on all the time day and night, again causing noise on top of that created but your own air con which is also not quiet Trying to sleep is not good.we where in the room next to the suite on the 4th floor and asked to be moved to the middle of the block to avoid the extractor noise.
The breakfasts were good but food sold in the evenings was not very good for the money so we ate out most nights. The pool area and access to the beach is good but nowhere as good as the Chaba Cabana. The staff were excellent and eager to please. Other than massage services by the pool, all other spa facilities are at the Chaba Cabana.
The Lake Wing rooms were being refurbished and appeared large but with no balconies plus noise from the bars was even worse.
So if you want to be in the centre of the town for all the action but no sleep stay at the Chaba Samui, if you want a beautiful location with excellent pool, beach and romantic setting then stay at the Chaba Cabana as it is still only a 20 x minute walk or 5 x minute Tuk Tuk ride if you want the action of the town
My wife and I preferred the Chaba Cabana overall as its location is far more beautiful and peaceful yet only a short distance from the action of the town. There is very little difference in the standard of the rooms and the small bathrooms are the same in both hotels, the Cabana is decorated in more Thai style and colouring and the Samui is more modern. There is no problem with cleanliness, service or breakfasts in either hotel, so you make your choice and take your pick.

Room Tip: Ocean Wing top 4th floor middle of the block

However if you don't book breakfast with your room its an unbelievable 530 baht per person. The swimming pool and bar area looks out on to the beach which is picturesque. The hotel is only a 10 minute walk to all the action at night so far enough away that it doesn't disturb your sleep. Rooms are clean, tidy and there are loads of little extras included free of charge ie beach towels and a fruit basket.

I'd recommend the Chaba Samui hotel. Stayed 9 nights here and found the hotel to be very good value for money. The hotel is situated on Chaweng Beach, accessed via the Ocean Wing of the Hotel ( 4 steps to the beach )The Swimmming Pool is a good size and is situated by the Beach, both are served by a well stocked bar serving both non and alcoholic beverages as well as food ( 10am - 7pm as at November 2012 ). There is a second Pool situated at the Lake Wing on the but I didn't use or view this ( on the 2nd or 3rd floor I think ). Breakfast was adequate, buffet style with , Thai , Continental & Thai offerings. Served in dining area at the Ocean Wing. Evening meals are also served at the Ocean Wing in the main courtyard area at the front, with nightly menu, some themed and all well priced. I stayed at the Ocean Wing and my room was comfortable, adequate size with Flat Screen TV, balcony with table and 2 chairs. Bathroom comprised shower, toilet and wash basin, again fair size clean and more than adequate for me. Room was kept very clean as was the hotel in general and all staff were very friendly and helpful. Taxis an chuk chuk's are readily available outside the hotel if required. All in all if you are looking for a well located, clean, friendly hotel with nice pool and direct beach access then I would recommend the Chaba Samui. I will be returning to this Hotel in the future.

What you looking for at Chaweng is a nice beach location. Chaba Samui has that. Started on a hotel to far from the central night life. 25 minutes was to far, but Chaba is under 10 minutes from the best restaurants and the clubs, when you want them. You dont want to live "in" the clubs as they never closes.

They have a evening restaurant in the garden with very nice prices, and different themes every evening. They have a pool, next to the beach, with full service and also here nice prices. Its a pool on top of the lake view building too, but never saw any guests there.

It was a very nice stay for a very nice price.

Room Tip: We chose the ocean view building, as its located on the beach, and not on the other side of the road...
