“Clean hotel, Friendly Staff, Great Location but Over priced!”
Reviewed April 17, 2010

We've spent out honeymoon at this hotel in July 2008. We booked the place through a travel agency in Bangkok. From the brochure they showed us the hotel looked much more fancier than it actually is. So when we arrived in Koh Samui and saw the hotel I was a little frustrated cos it looked old.

My frustration grew bigger when we were taken to our room. We were given one of the downstairs room which was quite dark and cos of the plants in front of the window we had no sun or no view. The only nice thing was the decoration on the bed made with rose petals and towels. Soon after we got the room we went back in the lobby to ask if we can swap the room cos we were not happy with it! I thought we were gonna struggle with it but the staff was quite helpful so they arranged another room for us in 15 minutes. We moved to an upstairs room which looked much lighter and had a better view. The decoration on the bed was moved to our upstairs room as well!

So the hotel looked old, it needed to be renovated but it was clean and the staff was very smiley and helpful. There was enough variety with the breakfast and dinners were lovely. We also enjoyed the view from hotel's restaurant which is placed right on the Chaweng beach. The pool was nice as well and the hotel is located quite central. It took only 5 minutes to walk into stores, restaurants, market place etc...

For us the biggest downside was the bathrooms. The bathtubs were almost yellow inside and the water didn't look very clean, Other than that we were happy with our stay at Blue Lagoon. I would recommend it to someone who doesn't have very high expectations of a hotel but if I go to Samui again I would probably try a different hotel!

Thank you for your review.

The hotel is one of the longer-established hotels on Chaweng Beach and, whilst this means we have longer-term expertise of how to take care of you, it also means that we need to renovate more frequently and thoroughly than other hotels. For this reason, we have renewed several parts of the hotel: for example, the bathrooms have been renovated in marble & granite and we have re-tiled the swimming pool and put in a new filter system.

We’re sorry that you weren’t happy with your first room; but we’re glad we were able to make you happy within 15 minutes by getting an alternative room ready for you. Also we now make sure ground floor rooms’ views are not blocked by garden foliage, and this of course improves the light in these rooms. We offer the bed decoration at no extra cost to the agencies if they book honeymoon guests at our hotel – however this is meant more as a surprise to the happy couple!

With regards to our pricing, our rates are very favourable in relation to other 4-star hotels around us - many of our guests have told us that we provide outstanding value - although you did not book directly and so we are not aware of exactly how much you were charged.

Thank you for echoing the sentiments of many posters here – that breakfasts and dinners at Kantara are very good.

Thanks again for your review – if you do come back to Koh Samui, we hope to welcome you back.

Our job as a hotel in a popular tourist destination is to put a smile on your face and keep it there until you're ready to go home. This obviously didn't happen in your case and for that we can only apologise.

We can however take your comments positively and use them to address the problems you have highlighted. I think that your comments have been echoed to to the management in person enough for us to sit up and listen... and as a result the hotel has undergone significant renovation. The rooms are not dark or smelly and measures have been put in place to make sure they never will be - unfortunately I cannot establish why this happened in your case as there are very few staff left over from 2008.

As for the price, many of the more recent reviews highlight our value as one of our better points; certainly we offer much more competitive rates than many of the other 4-star properties around us.

It seems that this hotel needs some up-grade. The place is right, but the rooms and bungalows look quite a bit old. It is a nice beach, and also the garden is beautiful, but the management does not reinvest it seems. I will return to Samui, but not to the same Hotel

Arrived at the Blue Lagoon looking forward to a little luxury and a relaxing 2 weeks, what a dissapointment!
We had booked a 'garden bungalow' that cost a small fortune, after checking in we were informed that the bungalow was accross the road form the hotel (this was not mentioned on the web site), well, the only way i can discribe it is it was a luxury garden shed in bad need of a make-over!
Every day we had to try and cross a very busy road to go to the main hotel for breakfast or to sit on the beach, that was a challenge in its self.
Most of the staff seemed friendly, but sometimes found it hard to communicate with them, they did not understand a lot of what we were trying to say.
There is a small private beach, but, due to the high number of sellers it drove us mad, the sellers would congrigate outside the hotel every day, we counted 8 at one point and they would take it in turns to hassle you to buy something, this would happen about every 20 mins or so, in the end i had to put my headphones on and wear my sunglasses to make it look like i was asleep, it drove me mad.
This was not a relaxing holiday and the hotel was not how it was advertised, a real dissapointment.

Thank you for your review and for highlighting areas of our operation that you feel should be addressed. And of course we are very sorry that you did not find your holiday relaxing and that you were disappointed with the hotel itself.

The Garden Bungalows are indeed across the road, although I would certainly not describe it as a "very busy road". They are built to reasonable specification and furnished nicely in classic Thai teakwood, so to suggest they are luxury garden sheds is possibly misleading. Nonetheless we have refurbished them in the time since your stay.

All of our reception staff speak reasonable-to-good English - it is one of the requirements we ask of Front Desk (and restaurant) applicants - but when speaking directly to other positions such as housekeepers and engineers, we consider English language to be a bonus rather than a pre-requisite.

Vendors on the beach can be intrusive and we have beach boys servicing the beach area to ensure that all of our guests are comfortable; I have personally spoken to beach vendors reminding them that we will not tolerate violation of our guests' privacy, although they are of course most welcome to speak to guests who call them over.

It does seem that your review is most critical towards your room rather than the rest of the resort. If any of our guests are not happy with the Garden Bungalows, we do offer a standard upgrade service to our Superior Rooms for a modest fee; and I would be surprised if this was not offered to you unless the higher room categories were fully booked (possible, as you did stay in December which is one of the busiest months of the year).

We stayed at the Blue Lagoon five years ago, and returned for a similarly good experience.

As others have mentioned, the hotel is located at the quiet end of Chaweng beach. You are a 10 minute walk (or a quick songtaew ride) from the heart of the beach, but aren't right in the middle of the noise.

We stayed in a Garden Bungalow. These are little stand-alone huts, each with a private bath and porch. The Beach Bungalows (which are more expensive) are right on the beach - with all the convenience and noise that goes with that location. We chose a Garden Bungalow because they are located in a quiet garden - but you need to cross the street and pass through the hotel lobby to get to the pool and the beach. (I don't think that the walk from the pool to the bungalow is much more than the walk from the pool to a third story hotel room.)

The room itself had just a hint of that wonderful musty beach smell that comes with tropical air conditioning. The furnishings were not first class - rattan dressers and platform beds - but the room was quite clean and had everything you would want (hot water kettle, beach towels, drinking water, telephone, safe, beach bag, hair dryer, beach bag, etc.). The porch was secluded enough that I didn't feel self-conscious if other folks were on their porches, and the bungalows are arranged so that you aren't cheek-to-jowl with the neighboring hut.

The hotel staff is indeed wonderful, as others have remarked.

The common areas of the hotel are well kept up. The pool area is inviting, with plenty of chaise lounges and umbrellas. While we were there, no more than 40% of the beach chairs were ever in use at one time. I saw absolutely no broken furniture or cracked chair pads - everything was in great shape.

The restaurant at the hotel was acceptable, and we ate there on the one day that it rained, but there are many many other restaurants, bars and nightclubs just a short walk up the beach. Breakfast is included in the cost of the rooms, and the hotel puts out a very nice breakfast spread, with western food (pancakes, cook-to-order eggs, bacon, etc.) as well as a nice assortment of fruits and fruit juices.

For us, the Blue Lagoon is just the right combination of amenities and price.

Thank you for your very accurate review.

One thing though – there are no third-storey hotel rooms as all buildings are two floors at most, which helps to provide a more natural feel to the hotel.

location:
hotel is located at a more quiet section of the chaweng beach and has a nice beach to relax. swiming with low water might be difficult, but there is a free shuttle to the sister hotel chaweng beachcomber further down the beach. to get you into more busy section of chaweng with all the baars, discos, restaurants at night, it takes you not more than 5 - 10 min by foot.

rooms:
rooms are with a lot of taste on a high level of standard. there is anything you expect from a 4star hotel.

facilities:
the hotel has a really nice brekfast/dinner area, right at the beachside in a typical thai design. there is anything from a little book library, internet, car rental, massage, .....

service:
very friendly people offering good service.

we would go back anytime.

  • Disliked — Swiming with low water might be difficult. But there is free shuttle to sister hotel further down the beach.

Thank you for your review and for recommending our hotel.

Our beach frontage is indeed not suitable for swimming at low tide, something which we state on our Web site. Having said that, it is suitable and comfortable for kids to play in and pleasantly shallow for romantic walks along the shoreline.

Having strolled along the beach towards the south end avoiding the rubbish and aggressive jet ski touts we were relieved/delighted to return to the peace and tranquility of this hotel. What has happened to Chaweng Beach? How has it been allowed to become so tacky?
Rooms not so great, clean and quite nicely furnished with good quality white linen - but dark, small and quite depressing - not sure I would want to stay for a week. There is also a problem with noise between rooms.Pool, gardens, restaurant all very lovely - and the naturally shaded beach is great - no need for beach umbrellas thankfully, also no seried ranks of beach chairs as with other resorts. Good staff and well managed.
Overall would highly recommend - unless room ambience is main priority.

Thank you for your review and for recommending our hotel!

Like any leading tourist destination around the world, Koh Samui has been subject to significant development to cope with the growth in tourist numbers. Some people that visited the island a long time ago are unhappy with the change that this has brought but, having been a permanent resident of Koh Samui for more than a decade, I believe that one has to take the good and bad from these changes.

We have noticed some comments referring to insufficient light in some of the rooms; we have taken action to check that the natural light is enhanced by fitted lights as much as possible without over-illumination. Also our rooms have been generally described as spacious and we have found that they are certainly not small when compared with other similar resorts.
