Muang Kulaypan Hotel
Ranked #61 of 104 Hotels in Chaweng
Reviewed September 22, 2012

Our initial thoughts of Muang Kulaypan Hotel was that it was a little rustic but after staying for 16 days we got to really enjoy it and realised how lucky we were to find this little treasure. A real bargain for being so central and an easy walking distance to the shops, markets and night life. We found the staff to always be friendly and helpful. The rooms were always nicely cleaned. We were glad we ended up with a balcony off our room which we feel was essential to give us extra space which we enjoyed at night with our friends. The hotel always had a relaxed atmosphere which we appreciated and the pool area was just great to sit and read a book. Our hardest decision each night was whether to turn left or right on the beach to sample some great restaurants.

Thanks Kulaypan - Kaye and Alistair Hamilton (New Zealand)

Room Tip: The rooms running down towards the beach on the left and right hand side of the hotel. Not the rooms...

We have had 16 nights in Muang Kulaypan Hotel , we were a bit surprised when we were shown to our room, the bed sits on the floor with a slight raised platform. We found this very difficult to get in and out of bed as we are not getting any younger and our joints do not work as they used to.
The staff were fantastic and very obliging and when asked if we could have an up graded room with at least an outside deck, they swiftly obliged and when we settled into our up graded room it still had a bed on the floor but we thought "Oh well" At least we had a deck .
The hotel it's self is somewhat dated but they told us tha there is a new hotel to be built in 2013 so we will be back.
The location so close to the beach is wonderful with an adequate pool and full waiter service at the bar next to the pool with Happy Hour drinks every night.
It is a short walk on the sand to lots of wonderful restaurant's , the food is amazing and the drinks are very reasonably priced. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would come again, the shopping is just a short walk with great markets and the taxi's are cheap to go anywhere .

You cant knock the grounds of this hotel.. Beautiful trees surrounding gorgeous pool area.
(There needs to be better walk ways to pool and pool toilet though.. Not nice walking bare foot on the grass!)
The hotel is on a beautiful part of the beach, 5 minutes walk from busy part of cheweng beach and there are beach huts to have breakfast on a morning. The breakfast was gorgeous, lots of variety!

The staff at this hotel are very friendly especially the staff who work in the restaurant.

I do think that more care is taken on the outside rather than the rooms though.

Our room was nicely decorated but some things could be better.i agree with one reviewer that the furniture is looking slightly shabby and our shelf holding the kettle was about ready to fall off.
I do have to mention the shower in our room was really bad.. Either very hot or too cold. The pressure also needs sorting as it only trickled out.. Impossible to have a nice shower
The hotel did have wifi which seemed to work better outside. Wifi only worked on the right hand side of our bed in the room, so me and the boyfriend were having fights to get the wifi connection ha!
Oh and another review said there was no hairdryer which there is!

We did have a lovely stay, I would stop again at some point but next time id probably choose a different hotel.

Very spacious grounds giving guests space from one another. Other hotels in Chaweng looked so cramped, beach chairs inches apart. Great, large pool for samui (many pools in samui are tiny). Lots of beach chairs, no fighting or reserving necessary and the hotel was full up. Rooms are clean but not super new. Balcony rooms are awesome. Great view of the ocean and hotel grounds, which is huge and gorgeous. very peaceful. Especially for Chaweng. Located on the best part of the beach unless your in south Chaweng. Sand has a muddy feel but within close walking distance to the best clear seawater (sandbars)(hotels directly in front of the great water have no beach when tide comes in, chairs on top of eachother, stinky run-off)
Breakfast service is slow but above average a la carte menu, always better than a buffet. Good coffee, from espresso machine. And the lady boss keeps serving breakfast well after 11. ok amenities, no hair conditioner. Drip coffee machine in room with coffee provided. Nice turn down service with small snack/gift. Pinging table, old tread mill and bike, a few free weights. Great wifi.

Stayed with my girlfriend at Deluxe for a few days, and both enjoyed staying.

Has Beautiful beach and operated by friendly staffs.

If I must mention "minus", that wiuld be the shower in the room. Not only facing difficulties adjusting temperature, but also pressure. It is not a big deal though.

Being a big fan, we'll definately come back if we have a chance to visit Koh Sanui.

Our group of more than 20 people from 8 different countries attended a beach wedding of our Non-Thai friends last June 2012. The ceremony was originally planned to be at the resort garden however, the couple decided that the long aisle would be much better to utilize so they conveniently moved the altar to the sand very close to the water. The service was good and the food was amazing ! The set breakfast was really huge and worth the money. The people at the reception are very helpful ,rooms are beautiful and the entire resort ambiance is warm and cozy.
I am so amazed with that that cute monkey ring bearer!

My family and I were at the hotel for a week in July 2012 and found it to be a fantastic place to stay in Chawang Beach, Koh Samui. The location is great. There are convenient shops and laundry services nearby. Everything you need (including night shopping streets, a hospital and a dentist) is within walking distance. Should you desire to go to other parts of the island, you can very easily hail a taxi or a converted passenger truck on the main road just outside of the hotel's entrance. We stayed in a deluxe garden room and it was quiet, clean, pleasant and perfectly adequate for a family of four (two small children). We didn't have any plumbing, electricity or excessive bug problems (this is a tropical country!) Breakfasts came with the room and the choices were enough to satisfy everyone. The restaurant staff were so wonderful and friendly. They can be a bit busy in the morning when everyone shows up to eat breakfast so please be patient! The swimming pool was perfect. I loved the color of the pool's tiles which were dark grey (more calming than bright blue) and the size was just right for the hotel. It is located near the beach so you can easily move between the two places. The pool bar is very convenient (but may I suggest that the mixed drinks be a bit more ... flavorful?) and the service great. There are pretty and clean massage huts on the beach near the pool (not associated with the hotel, I believe) where you can get different types of massage for 300-400 Baht an hour. They also offer hair braiding, manicure and pedicure services. Speaking of the beach, I took a long walk along Chaweng beach and found that the area in front of Muang Kulaypan was the cleanest spot. Some other parts of the beach were occasionally littered with plastic bottles which I assumed were remnants of the previous night's parties. The water was bathtub calm and blue, the sand fine and white. You can rent kayaks at various shacks nearby. There is a hotel security guard near the beach loungers. Once I left my kid's swimming vest and he kept it for us along with a 100 Baht bill that he found and assumed was ours. The bill didn't belong to us and we informed him so. I didn't get his name but it made me feel so good to have encountered someone so honest. Our whole week at the hotel was like a wonderfully restful dream. I heard that the hotel recently changed hands and renovations are scheduled to occur in 2013. I just hope that the management keeps the wonderful staff and maintains the quietly chic and peaceful atmosphere. There are other hotels nearby that look fancier on the outside but just don't measure up. As long as Muang Kulaypan keeps its charms, I will never stay or recommend anywhere else on Samui!
