“A good stay”

I stayed at the Cheweng resort for just over a week with four girlfriends. I shared a bungalow with one of my friends. It was very spacious. The bed was massive!! Also having the balcony was always good at night to start partying on. They service your room everyday which is good. The only problem in our bathroom was the water didnt drain that well.. but this did not matter too much. The hotel is right on the beach (a good section). There are two pools but we barely swum in as we preferred the beach. The food at the hotel is farely average. Although the breakfast is ok. The hotel is in a great position and walking distance to shops.. although when going out at night we sometimes got a cab which cost us like nothing! There is also a massive gym here, and they can organise tours for you... we hired a jeep and drove right around the island.
Overall we were very pleased with our stay here, one of my friends who i went with is going back to stay there again in August.

  • Disliked — The pool area... not really any lounges around the pool/./ the ones that were there were taken and like other hotels they had no lounges on the beach..

After bailing out of another resort due to the place being a dump we ended up here.

Pros:
Helpful staff, well airconditioned, comfortable beds, well appointed(but poorly maintained) units, good food, good housekeeping, good location, prompt attention to minor issues by management.

Cons:
no drainage from the bathroom sink (pours directly on the ground outside the bathroom) Very poor maintenenceof the resort in general, main pool getting to the point of being dangerous (broken tiles ,poor filtration)

Summary:
As other reviewers have pointed out. The resort needs major work. The place is riddled with termites even the reception area has chunks of walls missing. I would have been top class about 10 years ago but it is showing its age. Staff make up for the shortfall in the general maintenence of the place. I think they secretly admit that they are on the deck of the hotel version of the titanic. Overall it was an experience not to be missed. We just hoped that our bathroom ceiling held up until we left. The place could do with a bit more shade and we experienced the 'euro sunbed experience' as well. With only one tree for shade and only domestic beach umbrellas for the rest you had to be up early. If you weren't in position by 7am you missed out. Pool and spa are in need of re-tiling and some of the electrical work presents a hazard to guests. I have added some photos.
Overall a fun holiday and I would love to return.....if the place is still standing.

We booked this resort on the basis of fellow travellers reviews & some extra research via the web. We booked it through our own travel agent because they seemed to be able to give us the best total package for the itinerary we wanted.
We are regular visitors to Asia & have been to many destinations every year in the past 10 years (sometimes twice)
As a middle aged couple we do not seek the night life but we have a particular set of guidelines by which we judge a destination.
Firstly we require accomodation which is as clean as possible.
We accept that some destinations are sometimes 'smelly' but this is usually a result of being close to the beach with the resultant drainage problems associated with almost continual occupancy. The owners of resorts usually have little time to perform maintenance work & sometimes it does occur at the most inconvenient times.
With regard to Chaweng resort, we were aware that some maintenance work was going to be in progress during our stay but we decided to take our chances. As it turned out I was not aware of any noise from the refurbishing of a few units taking place although admittedly they were in the next row of units away from the one in which we were housed.
We were pleasantly surprised at the bungalow we were given. It was on the right hand side of the resort (as you face the beach) & it was no more than 10 metres from one of the pools & 30 metres from the beach. There was a 'smell' every now & then from the drains but nothing that would have caused me to lodge a formal complaint. Other units closer to the main road might have posed problems for my wife & I though as they were most probably noisier due to the traffic. Fortunately we did not suffer from noisy neighbours as so many resorts of this type seem to do. This might have been because it was very early in the season.
One reviewer on this site had alerted us to the fact that there was a mini mart as well as several local restaurants just outside the resort & this information coincided with the parameters we use when choosing to stay at particular places.That is, we like to have a variety of alternative eating places to hand within close proximity to where we plan to stay as eating in the same restaurant day after day can become boring.
The breakfasts were of the buffet style & were typical of what you can expect in most hotels. I found the food to be totally acceptable & there was a very good variety including muesli, yoghurt , fresh fruit & the inevitable 'eggs any way you like.'
The facilities in the bungalow were of an acceptable standard & in fact this room had the coldest air conditioner we have ever experienced in all of our trips to Asia, including some 'high end' 'name' hotels. The mini bar was well stocked although like most travellers I prefer to buy my supplies elsewhere & the fridge was large enough to accommodate my own prefered brands as well as having an ice cube tray!
The booking in procedure was basically the same as anywhere, with the staff being neither overly friendly but certainly not rude.
The resort was probably a full 10 minute stroll to the centre of the 'action' if you could call it that, but there are many 'taxis' (who do not use their meters but want you to negotiate a price each time) to take you anywhere you might like to go. This is typical of Thailand in general with most desinations suffering from 'meter
taxis' who refuse to use them.
The beach right outside Chaweng resort was very good, being both clean & safe. Although Chaweng resort does not have its own watersports facilities there are two resorts on either side who will rent out their hobies (catamarans) or trimarans. Needless to say there are many locals who will hire their jetskis etc for a reasonable cost.
As in the rest of Thailand there are many local markets to browse in. Most tourists probably only see those which are located in the main street but just down the road leading away from the main drag is a local market selling fruit & vegetables as well as pots & pans etc. Those who are interested enough to find their way there might be pleasantly surprised at how much cheaper things are where the locals shop compared to where the tourists shop.
This was our 3rd visit to Thailand & our first to Koh Samui & it suited us very well indeed. Chaweng resort is 'mid range' as far as I am concerned & I would stay there again without hesitation.

This was a dive. as soon as we walked into the so called resort the reception area was messy the staff didnt smile and threw us the key to find our so called "superior bungalow" we found it okay walked in the lace above the bed was ripped and was yellow from smoke stains, the bed linen looked old and of a grey colour black marks on the white wall. in the bathrrom there was a clear perpex roof which was dirty and filthy and holes in it.. so insects couls come through. all the mirrors and benches were not clean soap marks and toothpaste everywhere. i decided to have a shower.... no water... and no water for the whole 4 days i was there i complained and they "didnt understand" i tried chasnging rooms but they were not interested. the breakfast was horrible and no vareity coffee cold. the pool area was a discrace spa didnt work pool tiles broken and chairs broken plates lying around everywhere. NEVER STAY HERE IT WAS VERY BAD AND UNWELCOMING

The Chaweng Resort (Hotel), located at the Southern end of Chaweng Beach, and not to be confused with others of a similar name, was rather a disappointment to us... we booked via the internet directly in their website, and for a rate of 3400 Baht, (about GBP50 at the time) got a what was described as a "Deluxe Garden/Suite Garden" room.

On our arrival, the staff were efficient, but once in our room, it looked nice at first glance, but no sooner had the bellhop closed the door, we noticed the absolutly shabby condition of everything;
- the bathroom ceiling was covered with mould
- light fittings & plumbing fittings were hanging loose
- the marble basin side had dropped off leaving swirls of grout showing
- one side rail of the bed was broken off
- the wardrobe mirror was jammed in place with rivets !
- the bed sheets, while obviously washed & pressed, still had stains & black marks present

On the face of it,the room was probably the height of luxury 20 years ago, but since then all maintenance had been poor and "botched" - considering the rate we paid, we felt it was totally unacceptable, and due to the late hour, waited until the morning to complain.

Our inclusive breakfast tickets appeared at the door by morning, albeit one short, so after a journey to reception, we gained another ticket, while taking the opportunity to lodge a complaint about the room. The response being that apparently, all others roooms were booked out, and nothing else was available to us, so we thought we would "grin & bear it".

Breakfast was then far from our expectations, with the food relativly old, and the service lacking the customary Thai smile.

So, we thought a morning by the pool would relax us... but could we find a sunbed? There were plenty, but all had the customary "this is my bed towels" in place. On the basis that the rooms had four towels, one of our European cousins had managed to use up all four hotel towels, his personal beach towel, and had resorted to using the toilet mat to secure his sixth sunbed - not bad for a room with two guests & a one kid !

The message here is that while the hotel can't police this, the practice goes on here, as there is only a limited number of sunbeds, so any Brits wanting a sunbed to relax on had better get up early to stake their claim (anyone remember the Carling lager ad?).

Well to finish the story, this was the final straw for us and we went to reception at mid-day, and in fairness, they allowed us to check-out right away, and only charged us for the one night we had. We walked over the road to the Green Life Hotel (which was excellent, and I have reported on that separatly).

I see other good reports on this site, but it simply wasn't the case for us, either that or the management had changed dramatically in a few months.

In summary, the Chaweng Resort has had its day, and needs a decent renovation. The pools are small, and the gardens and pathways poorly maintained (as I suspect all the rooms were, not just ours). The beach itself was dirty (admittedly not the hotels fault), but the balustrade above the beach consisted of part broken wall, and part concrete pilings with steel rebar poking out in the air - now, thats an accident waiting to happen ! Overall, perhaps it's OK for a backpacker wanting a basic 1600 Baht room, but not a couple/family looking for something better.

We have returned to The Chaweng Resort 3 times, And we have never been dissapointed.

The Staff are always kind and helpful, The breakfast is top class, The 2 swimming pools are great with lot's of sunbed's, The beach is beautiful and clean with the sea just 20 yards away from your doorstep. The Bungalows are nice and clean with great A/C.

The Location of the Resort is on the Quiet Southern End of Chaweng Beach, which is ideal, Chaweng Beach is about 2 Miles long and although there are cafe, bar's and shops the whole length of Chaweng, the busy Part's are mainly to the Central to the Northern End. Chaweng has everything for everybody, it can accomodate the Single Man to the Mum And Dad with 5 Kids, A great place to go, The rainy season is from Sept to Dec, the best time to go is after Christmas.
