I was invited for dinner last week to Spirit House and really liked it. The restaurant is in a big and beautiful garden. Old traditional wooden Thai houses have been transported from Ayuttaha, and you sit in one of the houses (elevated, and with a roof but open on the sides).

Its in a back alley in Chaweng and I think it would be difficult to find it. Get a taxi there, or call the restaurant to arrange them to pick you up (free pick-up from hotels in Chaweng).

Food is thai, traditional in seasoning, herbs etc., but "with a twist". It is not the cheapest place, but not expensive either, and very good value for money. I would definitely visit again, for the food, and for the atmosphere.

There is also a spa at Spirit House (I didnt try it), so you might consider having a spa treatment first and then dinner.

This restaurant is beautiful visually, set in an amazing old building in lush gardens yet only yards from the main street. Service was excellent with all the nice touches such as cold towels at the end of the meal. We drank cocktails, 240 baht each, which is the same as our resort charges, very generous with the alcohol content!

Sadly that is where the good part ends. I had a prawn dish which whilst very tasty consisted of 4 prawns in a bowl of sauce, so basically I had 4 mouthfuls of prawn with rice in sauce. My other half had Masaman curry with chargrilled tender fillet steak. Sadly it lacked the flavours that even the cheapest small thai café manages and the steak was very chewy bordering on tough. The steak was floating in an oily sauce surrounded by a piece of potato, a piece of sweet potato and a couple of giant chillies

The food and 2 drinks cost around 1800 baht and we were still hungry but we didn't want to risk wasting more money on not so good food. Maybe the chef had the night off as we were only 1 of 3 tables in the whole place? Very disappointing after reading all the good reviews and making the effort to find the restaurant

I thank you for your response and unfortunately on this occasion we did not live up to our high expectations and we sincerely apologize for this.
In fact, you were right on a number of points.Yes, it is low season and yes our chef had the night off and yes we got caught out with our ordering of the premium Australian beef we normally use in our signature dish Beef Fillet in massaman curry sauce.
Fortunately this is an isolated case but for some reason can occur in the low season. If you are still in Samui I personally extend an invitation to you where I will ensure you have the dining experience you expected and anticipated.

Hidden away in a side street is the beautiful Spirit House. Superb decor, amazing ambience and food to die for - presented magnificently and true Thai flavours - absolutely delicious! Take the time after dinner to wander the grounds, set around an old temple - one of our dining highlights in Koh Samui!

The Spirit House takes you on a journey back in time to the Siam of years ago including hand painted guilt crockery. Their menu includes ancient dishes such as lilly leaves that encase a gorgeous vegetarian concoction of spices and delicacies. The Morton Bay Bug was accompanied with two spicy sauces: one a chilli base and the second a black pepper. Don't bother with the salt and pepper calamari as it is bland and doesn't even get a lime wedge to give it a little zing. Wines are drinkable and reasonably priced for this part of the world. We had a Chilean Sav Blanc for about $80 AUD. The best part of the meal was the Spirit House's signature dish: their mango and sticky rice dessert. Certainly worth a visit and while you are there you can stroll the grounds and admire their beautiful lilly pond. The restaurant is multi-levelled so ask for a table up high so you can admire the view of the gardens. Oh, and don't forget mozzie repellent.

This restaurant was a great find. The atmosphere in the restaurant was great, the staff were very friendly and the service was fantastic. After travelling through much of Asia this was some of the best Thai food I have ever had. Some of the items on the menu were different but very delicious however the beef massaman curry was absolutly sensational. The meat was cooked to perfection and it had such great flavours. It was soo good we went back a second night to have it again!
