“exceptional staff in difficult circumstances”
Reviewed April 4, 2011

We were unfortunate enough to have our stay in Koh Samui interupted by a significant 4 day flood that caused the total loss of power on the island for a couple of days and a full 48 hour shut down of the airport and harbour. The adjoining island was evacuated by the Navy. The Sareeraya staff were brilliant though. At all times they remained genuinely friendly and helpful. No fake smiles in this place. Unlike other hotels we had power at all times through the Sareeraya's backup generator. Other hotels ran out of fuel. Once the rain cleared the sareeraya arranged at short notice for me two minibuses to take uour group on a tour of the island, and that cost about a quarter of the supposed "genuine" operator called "destination asia" that operates on the island. Also "Destination Asia" are very unreliable and didnt show at the airport for our pickup, so avoid them and their demands.
The island wide balckout forced us to dine at the sareeraya for much of our stay, something we wouldnt normally do.
The food services at the Sareeraya are nearing perfection. The chef demonstrates cooking brilliance, and is happy to make anything that the fussy teenagers wanted. We were there for a wedding, and the reception dinner was extraordinarily good. The restaurant staff are beyond comparison on my worldwide travels, and what makes it the most amazing experience is that there is no pretence. This is a casual experience where your dine in shorts and barefoot - but at near silver service levels of quality. And prepare your self to feel unwell from eating way too much. You really dont want to miss anything on offer. The monday night buffet was expensive by koh samui standards, but well worth it.
We stayed in two of the suites, on level 2. The room was very clean and was kept clean. My only fault would be the hardness of the beds, but that is probably a personal choice. Watch the ends of the beds though - several people walked into them during our stay resulting in cuts and bruises. Quite dangerous and really needs padding. The hotel location was great as well. We were a very short walk to all the street action, and were by far in the greatest beach location. Make sure you try the fruit coctails by the pool. Sheer brilliance.
Koh Samui itself though is not well equipped for significant rain storms. There was signifcant flooding of the streets and other hotels, and the general open walled nature of all hotels and most restaurants is very questionable in wet circumstances. You just have to accept that you will get wet. Sadly the rain caused significant damage to much of the poorer quarters of the island that exist by the day, and it was only after our private bus tour that we realised koh samui really is a third world destination with a first world facade paraded brilliantly by exceptional resorts like Sareeraya.
What you think is an ideallic beach paradise is only paradise because the beaches are raked clean of rubbish every morning. You will enjoy cheap massages and cheap food, but once you realise how these people live, you really feel like you are exploiting them. Get used to being harassed everywhere you go. Taxis, tut tut busses, beach halkers - all the usual things. The islands governement really do need to consider the negative impact that some of these things have on tourism, especially when the hotel is forced to leave considerate little notes on what to avoid on the island to stay safe.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your excellent review posted on TripAdvisor! It is a real pleasure to read your positive feedback and the enjoyment you and your family received despite the inclement weather. Our Hotel was well prepared for the rain since we experienced similar weather in last Autumn. Fortunately the monsoon passed by quite quickly and was gone for the unforgettable wedding day.

We particularly appreciate your reference to the things we have control over such as the service and the food. Thank you for complementing our service team, kitchen staff and Chef in this regard. We are very pleased to serve each and everyone of our guests with genuine Thai hospitality and pamper with exceptional cuisine that is truly delicious, fresh, seasonal and great value for money. Thank you once again, wonderful feedback such as yours helps us to strive to maintain the highest standard of service for our guests. We look forward to welcoming you back and hope to exceed your expectations once again!

We saw a few negative comments on this hotel before leaving to Thailand but our own experience was very very enjoyable. The location is perfect for a romantic outing - on Chaweng Beach. Walking distance to all the happening places, shopping and food.

We stayed in an Outdoor Jacuzzi room with Private Terrace on the 3rd floor. Magnificent view of the beach while relaxing in the Jacuzzi was the perfect treat for our overworked minds and bodies.

The hotel offers cozy big rooms, small plunge pool, beautiful beach view and a perfect restaurant by the ocean with good food, very friendly and humble service. The beach is clean, well kept, peaceful and of course beautiful people all around.

The staff were kind enough to highlight on the arrival day itself that I may not be able to catch my return flight and helped me out in doing alternate arrangements.

We do receive a lot of positive comments on our modern facilities and attentive service team and are pleased to read your praise as well. The location of our Hotel is also brilliant as we are set on the quieter northern end of Chaweng beach, within a short walk to Chaweng's famed 5km main stretch of stalls, shops, restaurants and bars. Unfortunatly this hotel in no way lives upto its adverts/promotion on the internet. We booked four weeks at this hotel based on the principal of quiet/relaxing and soothing to your senses when in actual fact its an assault on your senses. Next to the hotel is a piece of waste land where dogs bark constantly all day and all night making it impossible to rest/sleep.If thats not bad enough fire works are going of till 2 am which are huge they will wake the deepest of sleepers shaking the whole room and your internal organs its the nearest you will ever get to a war zone.We were told by the manager lots of guests were complaining about the noise. The beach can get really dirty with rubbish but I have to say the hotel keeps its part of the beach very clean constantly sweeping through the day, unfortuantly on several days we got sticky oil on our feet from the beach. The sea in front of the hotel some 100 mtrs in both directions on most days was a coffee brown with two days being really bad with brown/yellow scum on the surface. In front on the hotel to its left live about 9 dogs who are territorial and work as a pack should another dog invade their area thus resulting in fights, we also saw the dogs on three occassions try to attack security guards and passers by. Also to the left of the hotel are two bars trying to out do each other on how loud they can play music which results in a boom/boom effect when you are laid in bed this along with dogs barking, fire works exploding goes into the early hours. The pool area is small 20mtrs x 5mts and only chest deep more of a plunge pool.Which results in heavy amounts of sun lotion floating on the top surface, added to this the noise with kids playing can make it impossible to relax around the pool, as parents feel the need to throw screaming children from one end of the pool to the other and once they are tired of this decide to balance as many kids on their shoulders as possible. The hotel supplies several
footballs/ basket balls around the pool which are constanly played with by the children/parents in the pool which again is a nightmare if you want any peace. I took all the above up on two occassions with the manager of the hotel who advised me many people had complained regarding the above and he totally agreed with all that i was saying and said the hotel should really be an adults and couples only if it was to achieve its objectives detailed on the internet. The above is a true account of our experience and spending four weeks at the hotel and costing several thousand pounds to stay there we feel more than let down that it did not live upto its promotional video on the internet. The positives are super designed hotel with really great staff, the breakfast choice is great though some guests could do with shopping baskets rather than plates as the amount food they take to the table to eat is truly amazing. Once again best looking/design hotel on the beach but to achieve the hotels concept it has to be adults/couples. Just to say though the last 5 days at the hotel the manager did move us to a quieter part of the complex and upgraded us to a villa which was a lot quieter and we slept soundly.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for leaving feedback about your recent stay in Sareeraya Villas & Suites. We are happy that our staff and accommodations were super to you and our breakfast buffet provided you a nice start for each day on your long vacation.

You discussed with our Staff and Management on several occasions about all the issues you mention in your review and we truly appreciate that, because we were able to accommodate your requests and do our best to provide you with a nice vacation while you were here. Unfortunately though, most of the issues had nothing to do with our Hotel and were in fact out of our control.

We understand that some guests can be quite sensitive to noises, but if you were looking for a truly peaceful holiday, then Chaweng might not have been the best alternative in the first place. As we have previously mentioned and reminded all the guests, fireworks are illegal in Samui and we do not allow any to set off on our beachfront and in our property. Unfortunately we cannot control other areas of the public beach and feel sorry that many people disregard the law. Regarding the dogs, there are few on Chaweng Beach, but most of them have owners and are people friendly. Previously we have not received any complaints about dogs and their barking.

First and foremost, Sareeraya suits best for couples. We do not have kids club or other activities available for the children, which are essentials for most families on their holiday. In addition, we did not have that many families with children during your period of stay.

Finally regarding the sea, the visibility can be poor at certain times of the year in particular when it is windy as the sea water gets mixed with the beach sand, but when the seas are calmer it is clearer. We clean the beach area several times a day to provide a nice, clean area for our guests to enjoy.

Thank you once again for providing us valuable feedback. We hope that you still have good memories of your holiday.

Elisa Korpivuoma

my honeymoon was spent at sareeraya villas. We had an exclusive beach villa with ocean view. The villa had an awesome private pool. Outdoor shower and a superb jacuzzi. We checked ib by afternoon and were welcomed with garlands and drink. The villa was opposite to pool and sea view. The beach was so beautiful and shallow sea that one could just walk inside the sea 2kms inside water.

The food was great a bit expensive and for our room we had complimentary wine and an awesome cake.

nights we would drink on beach and come back n borrow movies from the reception.

The villa was worth the cost. Very friendly staff at reception, helpful.

We would surely want to go back someday.

Luved the time spent.

I realy did enjoy the quality of the furniture and the free internet access.
the friendliness and simplicity of the staff, and the excellent breakfast
Hotel is located on chaweng beach on the northern part of it, which is not that much crowded and only 10 min walking distance from the center of the settlement ( biggest and most commercial of the island)
