“A luxury resort with villas and spacious rooms located conveniently in North Chaweng.”
Reviewed June 20, 2010

The hotel is close to the action in Chaweng but removed enough to have a peaceful retreat. The grounds are beautiful and follow the hill down toward the pool and beach area. The infinity pool is gorgeous and overlooks a picturesque part of the coastline. If you are a pool person, the resort is perfect, but if you are more of a beach bum like me, the sand is rocky and coarse and it's not a great place to go swimming. That said, you can pop right down to Chaweng (which I did) and enjoy beautiful white sand and crystal clear water. The hotel staff was great and helped us rent a motorbike, which I highly recommend even though I'd never done that before. Nice convenience store across the street from the hotel for any sundries.

As for the room, it had a very muted but elegant decor. The bed was off-the-charts comfortable and there was a nice daybed on the terrace/patio. Other pluses were 4 bottles of water and fresh tropical fruits each day along with very fast wireless, all of which were included. The one negative for me was that the bathroom did not have A/C and was separated from the room by double doors. The armoire for your clothes and private safe was in the bathroom, which was a little annoying. That said, I got used to this mild inconvenience and wouldn't let it dissuade you from staying here.

Breakfast was a delicious buffet, including omelet bar, and was included. It was served in the restaurant by the pool/beach. The other meals we had were just okay with well-meaning but iffy service.

Overall, we had a great experience and would highly recommend this property.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Anantara Lawana. Everything exceeded our expectations. Reception is open air and you are greeted with juice and jasmine garlands, then run to your room by golf buggy – the resort is spread out so some rooms are quite a distance from other areas eg pool or reception. It is an oasis of quiet in Koh Samui– although due to unrest everywhere was pretty empty during our stay.

We stayed in a private pool room which was lovely – and very private. Design is sort of old Thai – dark wood doors with glazing which open in 2 parts with heavy latches.

Smallish bedroom area with 4 poster style bed, excellent flat screen TV and DVD, kettle, tea/coffee, fresh fruit, complimentary water, mini bar/fridge etc. The bedroom did tend to be slightly dark – a little more light needed for reading or make up.

Bathroom was quite large with freestanding dresser and washbasin. Shower and toilet were open plan in a sort of concrete area. The only thing I wasn’t entirely happy with was that the bathroom was essentially open to the outside and not air conditioned. It was open at the top above shower and toilet, although there was some bamboo which provided a little cover. It meant that as soon as you showered you needed to get out of the bathroom or you would be melted again – and the lack of light and excess heat not good for doing make up etc. I lit a mossie coil in it each night as I was terrified of getting bitten on loo trips in middle of night! Happily we didn’t get bitten at all.
We liked the little private pool, which could be accessed from the bathroom or bedroom. It faced onto a sort of outside sala with floor sofa and coffee table and fan above it at the entrance to your room. It looked lovely but we didn’t really use the sitting bit as it was so hot. Pool was nicely lit up and had Jacuzzi bit. Certainly it all looked lovely.

Our rate didn’t include breakfast –so in fact we never ate in hotel so can’t comment on that. There was a choice of tree hug restaurant and also restaurant near pool.

Pool and beach area were really lovely – black tiled infinity pool, sunbeds and 3 sala beds draped in net. The fruit kebabs and juice were a nice touch. There was usually a happy hour from 5-7 which made cocktails affordable (from 300 baht down to 150 baht) There are some other – not anywhere as nice hotels –along the beach to the left. We did walk along one afternoon and stopped at one for a beer.

The gym is great – I was always the only one there and could put on a cd, water in fridge and towels available. There is a spa but again I didn’t use it.

The library is also a great feature – nice cool room, books and cds and dvds for loan, and internet access via some computers. Again water available, and also nice coffee via capsule machine and tea too.

About 15-20 mins walk into central Chewang, or 5 mins on a songthaew (sort of van with bench seats) Found we needed to bargain – started the week getting into town for 20 baht each , but later on at night or weekend went up to 50 then 80 baht!

Used Little Holland across the road for a drink on way home in evenings and also for brunch a couple of times. Two good supermarkets also directly across road. Further (3 mins) down towards town on right also had a nice meal.

The hotel has only recently become part of the Anantara group and I felt that the new management are making serious efforts to put in place improvements. Our stay was really good and I think it will get even better in future.

Dear highfly,

thank you very much for your positive feedback about your most recent stay with us and the valuable comments about areas in which we can improve.

As you mentioned in your review, we have taken over this resort just 6 month ago and even though I am confident that we deliver already a good experience for our guests we keep adding new benefits and changes, like the complimentary fruit kebabs and juices around the pool you appreciated so much.

It is certainly very much appreciated and highly motivating for my team that those changes and little extras we are doing are recognized and appreciated by our guests. Be assured that we won't rest and keep developing our resort even further. More to come...

With best regards

Reviewed June 12, 2010

We've just returned from a 10 night stay at the Anantara (27th May-6th June).
We absolutely loved everything about the place. We arrived early in the morning from Bangkok, and were promptly given fresh cold face cloths and a cool drink whilst the office manager May checked our room was ready. It was, and on entering the room I knew that our stay was going to be great.

We had a deluxe suite, no extra plunge pool or anything, but the room was fab. A really comfortable bed (which I promptly got into and slept for 5 hours!), amazing bathroom with bath, rain shower, and all the extras you could need (toothbrush, after sun, sewing kit, earbuds, razor etc) the mini bar was well stocked and the terrace area was an added bonus for relaxing with a book. Water and supplies were replenished every day and the rooms also turned down every night with extra touches like little notes on the following day's weather forecast left on the bed.

The pool area was well managed, right on the beach with free kayak hire. The beach itself wasn't the best, but Chaweng beach is much nicer if you prefer to sunbathe on the front. Other extras like fruit kebabs and frozen sorbets were served at various times throughout the day. The bar service was excellent, with happy hour between 5-7. We also ate in the restaurant for lunch a couple of times and that was also excellent value. We actually thought the chef was really very good. We also go a couple of bedside massages during our stay from the spa team. There is a new bar manager, Chris, who was implementing a few changes. One was a evening drinks reception for an hour one night of our stay - we attended the first one, free drinks and nibbles, there was also a cooking demonstration - a really good idea for guests to mingle and I guess for the staff to get to know the guests. We thought it was really well organized and a great added extra to our stay.

The real benefit of the Anantara though - the staff. They really couldn't have done enough for us - friendly and attentive, a real first class service. We got to know the office manager May, who was an absolute star - she recommended local bars & restaurants to us, arranged some transport to Koh Phangan for us, and always made an effort to talk to us when she saw us around the resort - on our check out she bartered with our taxi driver for us and sent us on our way with a bottle of cold water each for our journey. Perfect.

The location is also a bonus, close enough to Chaweng (5 mins in taxi) to go out in the evening, but far enough away that you can enjoy a night out and just chill in the day in the peace and quiet. The airport is a 5 minute taxi ride - we got stumped 400 baht on the way in, so a tip would be to go out to the street and get an open backed taxi - we would have paid 100 if we'd have done that. It's also really close (10 mins) to the Big Buddha Pier (about 10 mins taxi) where you can transfer to other areas like Koh Phaghan, Koh Tao.

Negatives are really hard to find, the only thing I would say is that that although the air con in the room cooled the room quite quickly once activated, we had to take the card key out with us every day which meant that the rooms were really hot when we returned, and there was no air con in the bathroom, so it was always hot in there. But that is a really small point and didn't really matter too much.

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place - we were treated like royalty.

Dear dollyk,

thank you very much for taking time sharing your feedback and experiences about your most recent stay at our resort with TripAdvisor and us.

We highly appreciate the opportunity hearing from our guests what they enjoyed and where we could potentially improve.

I agree with you that the people make a difference and therefore I am glad to see that you pointed out a couple of my team members which provided extraordinary service for you. Your feedback will be shared with my entire team, including Khun May and Chris as well as the Chef and I am sure it will encourage them to keep up the good work.

It is also great to see that you enjoyed our recently introduced Management Cocktails, which we will be holding now on a regular basis in order to have a better chance to meet our guests and introduce the entire management team to them over a drink and a little snack during sunset. Apparently we achieve what we intended to looking at your review.

Rest assured that we will be working hard developing our resort even further and hopefully have many more customers leaving as satisfied as you did.

With best regards

chef made sure they specially made breakfast w/o extra charge for children, whatever they demanded, only drawback is the lighting in the rooms very dark and gloomy rooms
need to be more bright.very good location with massage parlour rite opposite for good
massage at one tenth price than the spa at the hotel.

we stayed in room 310 from 15th to 29th May - what a view. We had no complaints whatsoever and found every member of staff so helpful and polite. We had alot of fun with the pool staff when they tried to master the snake cube that we purchased from the craft shop just up the hill from the hotel. We enjoyed the tree hug meal tremendously, what a great experience. We had a great meal across the road at the New Holland - they even went to market and purchased lobster for us on request and barbecued it especially for us. all in all it was a holiday of a lifetime and will take an awful lot to beat this. Our thanks to all staff and management especially Chris. Hopefully one day we will return........

World class resort and should be recognized as such. Truly romantic location. Very secluded and quiet. Rooms are simple "Ching" dynasty theme with authentic look furniture. Sand is coarser than Chaweng beach but if you prefer that it's only 5 min away. Breakfast is simple but adequate with fresh ingredients. Everyone is so friendly and nice. Thumbs up!

It was a nice change not having to stand in line to check in at a hotel. Alighting from the Toyota SUV sent to pick us up from the airport, we were ushered to a rattan sofa, and the staff brought the necessary forms for us to sign. In the meantime, cold towels were borught to help us refresh, and a lei was placed over our necks. A golf buggy then transported us to our Deluxe room, which was nice and spacious.

We had 2 gripes. One was with the bathroom. The water pressure was exteremely low, and the hot water was more lukewarm than hot. No doubt, the weather was in the sizzlings 30s, but hot water would have been nice for a 5 star resort.

Our other gripe was with the aircond in the room. Extremely hot. It could have done with servicing or pumping in gas to make it colder. We kept setting the thermostat at 20, and it kept reverting back to 29. That's how hot it was. Impossible to sleep. It was so humid, that we asked to change rooms the next morning. Avoid Room 508, unless they've fixed the aircond. The aircond in the new room turned out to be too efficient. It was freezing cold. We had to leave the dorrs to the bathroom open, to let out some of the cold air, in order to sleep. Woke up in the middle fo the night, still cold, so had to open the balcony door as well, to let in the warm air. They really should inspect their airconds, to make sure that their guests are not too hot nor freezing.

Other than that, the infinity edge black tiled pool was beautiful, overlooking the sea. Complimentary fruit refreshments on a skewer were brought as well as cold towels, and we also had a 10 minute head and shoulder free massage pool side by the masseurs from the Anantara Spa. The hamburger we ordered was delicious, as was the coconut drink. Pricey food, but no worse than any other 5 star hotel.

The Library was an airconditioned oasis, with complimentary water, tea and coffee, as well as books in different languages, such as German and Russian, as well as board games such as Monopoly + free internet access from 2 HP computers throughout the length of your stay. Nice touch, as most hotels would charge for internet access.

The gym was large, cool and well equipped, and I had the place to myself most times. It was like working out in your own private gym.

The buffet breakfast was adequate, but somewhat lacking for a 5 star hotel. More items would have been nice. For instance, there was only 1 type of yoghurt every day - plain flavour. There was fried rice at the local station, but no phad thai at all. The papaya was also not ripened sufficiently, so was hard. The apple juice was terrible, but the banana pancakes were good, as well as the assortment of jams. The service was good, particularly the waitress and the cook manning the eggs station.

What was good was the fact that you hardly saw any other guests, so it was like staying at your own private villa. Bad for the hotel in terms of low occupancy, but good for guests. No queues at the breakfast buffet, swimming pool was uncrowded and no noise. Hardly any children either. Only saw one boy throughout our stay of 4 days. Nice place to de-stress and get away from it all.

Massage, mini-mart and eateries all within walking distance of 5 minutes. 5 minutes' drive from the airport. Attentive service. Whilst waiting for the SUV pick-up to take us to the airport, the staff brought over cold towels scented with peppermint, as the weather was unberably hot, and we must have looked hot and bothered.

Dear Lyricaltraveller,
thank you for your overall positve feedback about your recent stay with us. It is certainly very encouraging for us to hear that many of the little touches we are putting so many efforts in are recognized and appreciated by our guests. I can assure you that there will be many more to come as we have just started...
Unfortunately water is a general challenge on Samui because the supply is not always sufficient and we have to work from time to time with backup systems, which are not able to provide the same water pressure as we would like to have. Nevertheless, the heat of the water should be usually fine and we will have our Engineering team rechecking your first room within today.
The airconditioning in room 508 has been checked and fixed on the day you moved to the other room. We are surprised hearing that the other room has been too cold, as each aircondition has it's own individual thermostat from which you can adjust the temperature yourself. Nevertheless, we appreciate the feedback and will ensure that our Receptionists who are escorting the guests to the room focus better on the explanation how to adjust the temperature in the room.
Your feedback about the breakfast is highly appreciated and I am glad being able to confirm that our new Executive Chef arrived earlier this week and that this is one of his first priorities. We do have actually 2 different kind of yoghurts every day on the buffet already, one plain and one with fresh fruits and I was surprised to hear that you haven't seen it.
Once again, your feedback is highly appreciated and should you return to Samui in the future it would give me great pleasure showing you the improvements we made.
With best regards
