I was really excited to get to Koh Samui to relax. After having the most incredible stay at the Chedi Chiang mai, coming to the Anantara was like going from the four seasons to a Marriott on the level of cleanliness and most of all service. We had a pool access suite which I was not a fan of. The bathroom did not have air conditioning and for those of you who know how hot thailand is in the summer, it's like getting ready in a sweat box. The shower was open and therefore so was the whole bathroom meaning you had to make sure the bedroom was always closed to not only keep the AC entact but to ensure that no bugs got in. we had a parade of ants in the shower area each morning. Service was not up to par for the kind of money we were spending.

Dear csimons1,

Please accept our apology that we haven’t been able to meet our own very high standards during your recent visit.

We usually receive very good feedback about our Deluxe Pool Access Villas, but would have certainly been glad offering you alternatives as it obviously didn’t meet your personal taste.

We would appreciate being able to welcome you at another time and showing you other options we have to offer, including our service spirit we are usually very well known for.

With kind regards

Reviewed September 19, 2011

3 Months after returning home it is well overdue that I finaly post some feedback on our trip back in June. I delayed posting this beacuse I was so annoyed but on looking back at the photos and video I took, the comments and assessment made are well substaintiated.

We had stayed at the Villa Lawana in Feb 2009 and were itching to get back there. The first time we stayed there it hadn't been open long and ended up in a pool villa that the large pool was shared by 4 other villas, but we were the only ones there and had the place to ourselves. The staff were great then and it was the little things that they did when we were there that left a lasting impression. This time I decided to plurge out on a ocean view private pool villa. big mistake and what a rip off. The resort is now known as the Anantara Lawana, so do yourself a favour and look elsewhere, why ?........................read on.

The place has gone down hill badly we had algae and mould growing on the sides of our pool, the floor in the bathroom sagged and creaked everytime you walked on it. The outdoor shower was full of leaves and rubbish on the floor and took 2 days for it to be cleaned. The outdoor bath was badly stained and they were generous enough to give us a piddly littlle plastic bottle of liquid soap that you would find in the shower of a 3 star hotel but not enough to go in the large bath. The outdoor decking had temp screws everywhere to do repairs. We had no privacy becuase anyone who walked up to our entry could like straight across our our outdoor area and the pool. We couldn't find the light switch for 2 days for the pool and there was nothing written down in the guest book nor was it labelled. Our outdoor sun lounges had large tears in the joining seams globes had blown on the outdoor lights under the day bed, roof shingles were loose, and so the list goes on.

Our Villa looked straight down over building work where they were pulling up all the timber decking adjacent to the main resort pool. Instead of using wrecking or crow bars to pull the decking up, the workers just used other bits of timber to bash the decking loose. After a day and half of this noise doing my head in as well as the workers continually looking up at us, I politely went down to see reception and express my dissapointment.

I had expected that they wouid have made arrangements to move us elsewhere because the resort was far from being booked out. But no appology, no change of room nor anything deducted from our bill even though I had paid direct and they had no agent commissions to pay for our booking.

Breakfast was OK, liked the smoothies that they had but overall didn't think the range of standard was as good as Anantara Bophut.

Also used the gym each day but when I opened the fridge after a work out there were no cold face washers on any day so obvious they do not provide.

Really dissapointed about the Anantara Lawana and won't set foot in there again. If their management want to refute any of my claims I am happy to put up photos on the forum and also video on You Tube so others can judge about the noise and the very poor maintenance practices for themselves not just in our villa but right across the resort with ripped lounges, seats, badly worn and broken timber etc etc etc. They have really let the place go.

They also appear to have an identity crisis as well, although it is no longer known as the Villa Lawana but the Anantara Lawana and has been that for over 18 months, they still use Villa Lawana stationery and all the table mats are still Villa Lawana but just turned face down so you cant see. Surely for the inflated prices they are charging for poorly presented rooms and the resort in general and their lack of willingness to compensate those impacted from time to time, surely they could have one consistent branding across the resort by now.

Dear MelbTravel45,

We truly apologize that we haven’t been able to provide you with the same fantastic experience you had previously at our resort. I can assure you that we are putting many efforts into the upgrade of the resort, which you unfortunately experienced firsthand with the upgrade of the entire pool decking.

We are surprised to hear that your complaint hasn’t been addressed properly and we will certainly put additional efforts into the training and development of our team to ensure the communication, follow up and potential alternatives will be handled more efficient. Once again my apology that we haven’t been able to meet our usual standards here.

All Villa Lawana stationary should have been replaced already and in case that you have encountered some we must have overseen these items and want to apologize for this. We decided to keep using a very small number of linen items which are still in good conditions as we felt it being irresponsible towards the environment to throw those away as long as they are good. To the best of our knowledge this is a very limited number of items and we expect them to be replaced within this year.

We appreciate your feedback very much as it gives us the opportunity to focus on areas we might have not paid enough attention to and we are feeling encouraged that the upgrades we are doing are meeting our guests expectations. I am also happy to inform you that the result of the pool decking renovation turned out to be a very significant upgrade with a beach sand area that is highly appreciated and commented about by our guests.

With kind regards

We have just returned from Samui yesterday. We stayed at Anantara Lawana resort for 4 nights. Overall, the resort is nice and our pool access villa is well-designed and beautiful. However, on our last night at the resort, we were invited to the bbq night organised by the hotel. Of which, we paid 1,490 bhats per person exclusive of drinks. For the food, there were some very boring salads, very small pieces of white fish, medium size prawns, little pieces of crab, some chicken and small pieces of steak. Each time you ask, they would give one prawn and a pieces of "smaller than a business card" fish or meat. The night started at 7pm and we got there by 7:30, 2 out of the 3 "Asian dishes" were finished. The only Asian dish left was boiled rice. I am a size 8 lady and I don't eat much. Still I came back to my villa hungry that night. The total bill for the 2 of us came to around 5,000 bhats.
For entertainment, there were 2 "not so good" singers and lady boy show which involves some parts that a ladyboy was actually singing topless.
There were mostly couples having their romatic dinner and some with little children ...

Room Tip: Hotel transfer for 500 bhats is a rip off.

Dear StageC,

Thank you very much for your valuable feedback and your positive feedback about your overall stay.

Please accept our apology that the BBQ night didn’t meet your expectations and that we obviously didn’t meet our own high standards at all time on that night. We reviewed your feedback with the Executive Chef and we will ensure that items are more frequently replaced. Our goal is to provide the freshest products in the highest quality at any time, no matter if you are ordering something a la carte or eat it from a buffet. Therefore we put smaller amounts of food on buffets and replace it more often. Especially in our tropical climate we are cautious how long food is exposed to the heat. Unfortunately it appears that our Chefs were struggling with replacing the food quick enough and we sincerely would like to apologize for this. We will also ensure that the Chefs will ask more clearly how many pieces of meat, fish or seafood a guest would like to have in case someone hesitates to return again for some more.

We are surprised reading your feedback about our Cabaret show, as this is usually very highly and positive commented on by our guests. We will review the show with the artists again as there is certainly no topless sequence in the original act.

I appreciate as well being able to explain our pricing for the airport transfer. Considering that a local taxi transfer costs around THB 400 we believe that our charge of THB 500 is very reasonable. Especially considering that the quality of the car is far more premium and you will have one of our staff members waiting for you at the arrival area and helping you with the luggage.

Thank you once again for your very positive overall feedback and the constructive comments on areas for improvement. We would be glad being able welcoming you back and inviting you for a BBQ night so you can review the improvements we did.

With kind regards

We stayed for seven nights at the Anantara Lawana for our honeymoon, we booked a Deluxe plunge pool room and have to say it was amazing. We stayed for the first week of September and the weather was really hot, we cooled off in the plunge pool most days as it fell in the shade and was much cooler than the resort pool or even the sea! Would definitely book the same again.

Housekeeping at this hotel was second to none, we had two visits a day from staff who cleaned the room in the morning and came back at about 5.30 - 6.00pm to turn down the bed and clean around again.

We ate both lunch and dinner in the resort (dinner being at the Tree Tops Restaurant), yes it is a little pricey compared to the beach restaurants etc but quality of food is excellent, Tree Tops is lovely if you are looking for a romantic setting.

Staff are extremely helpful, we had a problem with the safe in our room when we stayed, the battery was on its way out, however, this was dealt with very quickly and efficiently and we were soon able to use it properly again. Brilliant Service.

As far as we were concerned the hotel is ideally situated, far enough to walk to be 'in the thick of things' and far enough away to be able to relax and chill out. Our batteries are well and truly recharged!

Dear Karen C,

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your stay and share your experiences.

It is very good to hear that we helped you recharging your batteries, especially as we apparently can't say this about our in room safety box battery. My apology for the inconveniences.

We hope you had a pleasant trip back home and the batteries will stay charged for a while. Otherwise you will be very welcome to visit us again anytime.

Recently returned from a 6 night stay at the Anantara Lawana, overall the stay was very good. The pool and the resort are well laid out and spacious enough to feel secluded and relaxing. The hotel is well located as it is far enough away from the main strip of Chaweng to be peaceful but near enough to go in of an evening or wander to down the beach during the day. There are shops, spas and a laundry all over the road from the hotel and more with in metres in either direction. The main strip is 5 minutes away in a taxi -best to get the open bus taxis rather than the ones that hang around outside as they are cheaper.

We thought the choice and amount of sun loungers was good. We spent time by both the pool and the beach. The pool is large and even with other guests in it feels spacious and uncrowded.

The breakfast everyday is lovely, with a lot of choice both local and international. I totally reccomend the iced coconut latte and the crispy bacon. We also ate lunch at the hotel and the food was good quality with lots of choice on the menu. We ate out in the evening as it was nice to get out and the prices on the main beach and the restaurants in the town are significantly cheaper.

We upgraded to the plunge pool room when we arrived but having seen the normal room on our last day almost wished we hadn't. The plunge pool was small and too cold to really sit and chill in so the only time it is good is after a gym work out or run to cool down. The room also has an open air shower and bathroom which has lots of creatures flying in and out and due to the open air layout led to there being alot of mosquitos in the room (this is not the hotels fault as they provided two plugs and spray and also sprayed the whole resort and room while we were there) not being ones for nature we really didn't like that aspect and would have probably been happier in the normal room. The plunge pool also takes up alot of space and so the room is much smaller than a normal room. The normal room has an enclosed bathroom and a bath too.

The staff in the hotel are all very friendly and helpful and the service is excellent. The cleaning at the hotel is of a very high standard amoung the best I have experienced. Our room was cleaned twice a day and they even lit the citronalla sticks that we bought ourselves every afternoon.

We also tried the free yoga in the morning and which suit all levels including beginners it is an early start 7am but a good way to start the day - it is on 3 days a week on a decking over looking the sea. In addition the gym is open 24 hours and is adequate for a holiday work out.

Overall my experience of the hotel was very positive and we had a relaxing stay there.

Room Tip: Don't upgrade to a plunge pool room

Dear Saratogadxb,

Thank you very much for your positive feedback.

We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay and had a wonderful vacation with us, even though the room type was not your most preferred one. As you can see in many reviews, some of our guests love the Deluxe Plunge Pool rooms and others don't like them for varies reasons. A key feature of it is certainly the open garden and bathroom/shower and we understand that it is not everybody's preference, therefore we are glad being able to offer alternatives.

We would be glad being able to welcome you back in the future in either one of our Deluxe Lawana rooms or any other.

We holidayed with another couple and stayed in the private plunge pool room. We found the staff very friendly and helpful, from the security guard at the front gate to the best housekeeping we have ever experienced in our travels. Pink was just fabulous and to see her lovely smiling face each day was a highlight of our trip. Breakfast was lovely and varied enough for our taste, try the daily smoothies really yummy. The beach is ok, but there is plenty of room around the main pool and we had our own plunge pool. The rooms aren't large, but who goes on holidays and spends all their time in the room! When checking into our room there was a very bad odor, the staff member who showed us to the room immediately moved us there was no hestiation. No problems with mozzies, we got bitten more in Chawenthat an at the resort. Overall we were made to feel very welcomed by all the staff and if we return to koh samui would definitely stay here again.
