“Lovely stay at Villa Vista Mar”
Reviewed May 25, 2008

The Villa Vista Mar is a lovely spot to stay for those looking for rest and relaxation. We chose it based upon the TripAdvisor reviews as well as the proximity to the Liberia airport (about 30 minute drive) as we did not want to be spending our precious vacation time bouncing along the infamously bad Costa Rican highways. Although it is a short walk to the beach (about 10 minutes), the view from the hillside location is definitely worth the trek. Ed and Lorrie were excellent and knowledgeable hosts who went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. We enjoyed having the small kitchen to prepare our meals (especially as dining options are somewhat limited in Playa Ocotal). Overall, a wonderful, homey spot to enjoy the beach and sun.

We visited Costa Rica in April to visit family and friends, but wanted to spend a couple of days exploring the countryside and more specifically, the beach. I found Villa Vista Mar online after some extensive research, and contacted Ed Scanlan, the property owner, by telephone. He assured me the apartments in the villa were exactly as represented in the online photos and we were not disappointed.

Originally from upstate New York, Ed and Lorrie Scanlan now own and live in this beautiful Spanish villa built on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, a beautiful 3.5 hour drive from San Jose. The top level is their residence, and the bottom two levels contain the three apartments. Each apartment has a private entrance and the views are spectacular. The private pool and sun deck were delightful and we made good use of the ranchero (covered patio area with washer, dryer, charcoal grill, sink and restroom) to cook lunch after a refreshing swim.

After a price/value comparison of hotels in the area, we quickly determined that there was no better value. This area has become quite the tourist destination and the prices reflect it ($18 for six soggy fried shrimp and fries at local eatery Father Rooster). Food prices in neighboring Playa del Coco were not as high but still overpriced.

The drive from Playa del Coco to Playa Ocotal is very short, but a little difficult to navigate, with the cracked and disappearing pavement giving way to potholes, dirt and gravel; all while avoiding the volume of locals on bicycles. Even the roads in Playa Ocotal, a gated community for the above-average income, were riddled with holes.

The $75/night inclusive we spent at Villa Vista Mar was the best deal we got on this trip. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. The air conditioning (operated by remote control) was helpful in combatting the humidity and kept the room very comfortable. The bath towels were soft and thick. All the amenities of home were provided, including a fully-stocked kitchen with appliances and cable TV.

We would absolutely return to Villa Vista Mar the next time we're in Guanacaste.

Anyone staying at Villa Vista Mar will have everything they need for a relaxing vacation. A comfortable respite from the hot sun and rough roads of Guanacaste, Vista Mar is run by the most caring and hospitable couple, Ed and Lorrie Scanlan, who live on the premises and are always available to offer advice and tips from where to eat and visit to how to get a good deal on a rental car. The Villa has three bungalows, each with its own kitchen and other amenities, an outdoor kitchen, pool and lounge area. There is also a steadfast wireless Internet connection that is hardly ever offline, a near miraculous feat for these parts. Ed and Lorrie maintain everything with great care and attention to detail. They give the same consideration to their guests, many of whom keep returning year after year. We stayed at Villa Vista Mar for several weeks and we highly recommend it. The view from your porch alone -- of the Pacific ocean, the Papagayo peninsula and the volcano in the distance -- is enough to convince you to stay here. Villa Vista Mar's consistently high quality of life at an affordbale price is why guests keep coming back.

We have stayed at Villa Vista Mar for several days each of the five visits we have made to Costa Rica. Lorrie and Ed are wonderful hosts who are quick to find answers to any queries we have had. They have recommended wonderful restaurants in the vicinity and are very knowledgeable about development on the Pacific Coast.

The views from the suites are exceptional and we find them to be very clean and well equipped. My husband and I usually spend a few days when we arrive in Costa Rica at Villa Vista Mar and enjoy some sun and relaxation in the privacy of the villa before heading out to explore other areas of the country. I especially enjoy swimming laps in the pool and the lush gardens. Usually there are flocks of parrots flying through the valley and we are often awakened by howler monkeys in the morning. Gets you in the tropical mode very quickly!

There are at least three good restaurants within a few minutes walk and the beach is just a short walk away. We enjoy the tide pools and blow hole at the beach. Also, Ed has twice arranged sunset sails for us which we have thoroughly enjoyed.

We also appreciate the proximity to the Liberia Airport and often spend our last night in Costa Rica with Lorrie and Ed. We always feel pensive in saying goodbye to such a beautiful location and good friends when we leave!

We just loved this place--clean, spacious, private, nice pool, and, above all, a beautiful view! Ed and Lorrie were great and very helpful (well, its difficult to add much to the previous review...). By the way, we recommend the "private" beach (at Bahia Pez Vela Resort).

Villa Vista Mar in Playa Ocotal is a true gem on the beautiful Pacific coast of Costa Rica. My wife and I recently stayed there on our honeymoon for three nights (but wish we had stayed longer).

The first thing you´ll notice upon arrivial is that the Villa is tucked discretely away on the mountainside of Playa Ocotal, offering both quiet, peaceful surroundings, as well as spectacular views of the bay below. It´s much quieter at Playa Ocotal than the neighbouring tourist destination of Playa del Coco. Playa Ocotal doesn´t offer many of the ammenities of Coco, but Coco is close enough that you can take a taxi in (7min, $5 USD).

The owners live on site and were welcoming from the moment we arrived. Ed and Lorrie went above and beyond our expectations, several times offering personal service. Ed drove us into town to pick up groceries, booked transportation for us, and offered detailed advice on other hotels and services.

The Villa has three rooms, and we stayed in both the small and medium sized apartments. There is a generous common area with a spacious pool with lounging area, BBQ and washer-dryer. All apartments are outfitted with a kitchen, tv, ac, and hot water. Both rooms were very clean (no odors, clean floors, clean bathroom). The common area was also orderly and the pool was immaculate and a joy to swim in morning and evening.

Rates are a great deal considering the quality of the property and service, and compared to other options in the area. Apartment 2 was a steal, considering the astounding vistas, common area and spacious room.

My reason above all for the review, is to share this wonderful experience on the Pacific with others, as it´s not listed in many guide books. It´s only time before more catch on to this gem and it becomes booked.
