“great family hotel”
Reviewed July 26, 2012

We travel a lot and do a lot of fly drives, staying in hotels/motels for a day or more. This one one was such an experience as being what everyone loves, a small hotel with family values. The two brothers couldn't do enough for us when we arrived early; helpfulness and rooms were all you could want. Location is good ( not great, but good) as a beach is just about walkable, more selection of lidos driveable. Shop very close; restaurants easy 20 minute walk and all good to excellent. Great to have easy parking at the hotel, and wonderful to have a pool to refresh and read by. Top marks for when I left my hat in the hotel after we left; Salvatore was so, so helpful and returned it to me, when he could have so easily not responded. That's what makes me give his hotel at least 5 stars!

We were willing to forgive the rather poor room. We could let go of our disappointment with the water dribbling from the shower at full power. We even shrugged at the meager breakfast which made us really appreciate the spread at the various budget hotels in the US. What turned us off was the attitude of the people behind the front desk (except for one), especially the "manager". Perhaps we should have considered ourself privileged to be allowed to spend the night at this hotel judging by these members of the hotel staff (no, they didn't even say thank you on our departure). We were happy to leave and would not return upon our next trip to this beautiful region.

We had a delightful week in Sicily. It was quite a long night drive from Catania airport and we found it very difficult to find the hotel. Finally, a staff member came to meet us as we were in the main town and not in San Leone. This was at 2am and we were very grateful!

The restaurant is very good, there are numerous trips which the hotel run and they have a great map which gave us some amazing places to visit not in the books, such as bubbling mud pools and very secluded beaches. Nice pool across the road with the car park, but no lunge to sit except for the bar/ lobby though free internet.

The hotel was slightly more basic than we had been led to believe by lastminute, which claimed it was a four star- it's definitely a 3 max. and we were asked to pay for our whole bill as we left, even though we had paid via lastminute. We refused and left.

What makes this hotel stand out from all others I've stayed at is the delightfulness of the family who run it. We arrived at about 1 a.m. after a rather stressful drive from Catania Airport, and were immediately made to feel completely at home and given complimentary welcome drinks from the bar while one of the totally wonderful staff shared his enthusiasm for the area by making helpful suggestions about places to visit: we could feel our stress just melting away. What I loved about the service was that it was never in-your-face, never intrusive, but at the same time, nothing was ever too much trouble for any of the staff, and they regularly went out of their way to enhance our enjoyment of our stay.

Dinner in the restaurant was always very good: also served in very large quantities, so take care not to over-order. Don't miss the excellent antipasti, or the chicken escalopes in butter and sage - wonderful.

In terms of facilities, this hotel is fairly typical of most affordable hotels I've stayed in on the continent: ie. perfectly adequate, clean and comfortable, without being luxurious. But in terms of the pleasure of staying there, this one far exceeds the others I've known. It is also just a few minutes' walk from the heart of San Leone, with its beaches, restaurants and bus connections, and has a secured car park right opposite. It's also easy to find, which you'll come to appreciate if driving in Sicily!

If you like to stay somewhere fancy with grand facilities, this probably won't be the hotel for you. But if you want somewhere comfortable, clean and affordable, where the staff make you feel totally at home and go out of their way to be helpful, the Hotel Costazzurra is perfect. We loved it, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Pretty much the same view as several others on here, stayed 2 nights, a little noisy as there is a building site next door currently, quite basic but clean, great value and did what we needed it to do.

We were spoiled at our other 3 hotels in Sicily which casts the Costazurra in a slightly worse light than it may deserve. One thing that was way below the others was the breakfast.

We spent one night here to enable us to visit the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. The online booking system worked well and the hotel emailed us a week in advance to remind us of our booking. The credit card was not charged until we checked out. The rooms are basic (we had a superior room for the same price as a standard room) but clean and air conditioned although we didn’t really need it. We had a balcony but the view was of one of Sicily’s many part completed buildings. All the staff were friendly and helpful and most spoke very good English. There is a free internet terminal in the reception area. The breakfast buffet was ok but again fairly basic with not a lot of choice. The croissants were burnt and we didn’t chance the fruit in case it hadn’t been properly washed so we made do with the breakfast cereal, bread and yoghurts.
We did not have dinner in the hotel and only saw 2 people in the restaurant all night. The hotel was very quiet with only about 3 cars with guests. We parked right outside reception, which is normally reserved for pick up/ set down, instead of across the road in the car park. So if you want a reasonably priced basic hotel for 1 or 2 nights then this is fine. If you want a bit more luxury look elsewhere. San Leone was very quiet with many of the restaurants closed for annual holidays. We had dinner in Marco Polo restaurant on the sea front and it was good and reasonably priced.
