“very disappointing stay”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

The hotel looks lovely upon arrival but we found a few things quite odd. the hotel is called a wellness and spa hotel but this part of the hotel is only open on the weekends. they have a lovely swimming pool which they charge €5 per day per person for and then €3 per towel and then decide to close the pool between 1 and 3pm everyday for no apparent reason. when we arrived, the only food available was at their poor bar. we had 2 cokes and 2 very poor quality sandwiches and this cost €16 which was frankly embarassing for what we ate. the wifi only works at reception even though it is advertised to work in your room. the rooms are pretty basic and our shower didnt work properly.Overall we felt that the hotel wanted to charge a lot of money for things that are usually included in the room rate.
at breakfast the hotel clearly catered for coach groups as there was next to no service and the breakfast was very average in quality.

I rang this hotel before booking as we were travelling via public transport and needed to know if it was accessible from the station and local bus.Tthe response was 'yes', but they forget to say you have to walk up a 300 metre long laneway that is extremely steep. At the same time you have to avoid cars that are eccelerating fast to get to the top of the hill.
After arriving in the very hot weather dragging a suitcase and up the steep hill the reception area has no chairs and no airconditioning. No offer of a drink of water!!Iit was 3pm and our room was not ready...another 30 minutes.
So off to the pool area to get a drink and something to eat. The food was prepackaged panini that had to be heated to make it barely edible.
At least the room was air conditioned, although small and dark. The bathroom was very small and no room to move in the shower.
We decided to have dinner in the restaurant but it was closed for a private function and we were told to climb the 100 steps downhill to the beach restaurant....too steep.
The next day we found out was a public holiday so we asked reception to call us a taxi to take us to the temples. Well the taxi arrived and when we got to the temples the driver had no English and wrote down that he wanted 200 euro for the trip. The doors were locked but we finally parted paying 40 euro....happy to arrive at all!
The next day we were leaving by train but told it was a public holiday again so we were told to catch a local bus at 7am and then a bus to Palermo at 8am. We took the local bus finally arrived at 8am and then the Palermo bus din't arrive after waiting with lots of other people for 3 hours.
Luckily a local took pity on us and got us a train ticket the same day back to Palermo.
Not an experience we want to repeat and the lack of assistance and knowledge from the hotel staff.
Think carefully before going to this hotel...especially if you are a tourist and only speak English.

It was difficult to find a decent hotel in this part of Sicily, but I'm glad we found this one (by the way there were no other 4 star hotels neaby). The hotel is very clean, very friendly staff, good waiters, but they'll never do anything beyond their duty (I had my birthday there and my husband ordered flowers through them and mentioned the occasion, but they didn't send a card or anything).
We had a room with a sea view on the second floor in the block near the pool, and we never regretted paying extra for that. The balcony was large and we could relax there enjoying fantastic views. We had HB, dinners and local wine ('Corvo' both red and white are excellent) were great. Probably because of HB beach and swimming pool facilities were free (except for swimming caps for the pool). Wi-fi was free, but you had to get a new password every 24 hours and for each device.
The territory and the beach were well kept and very clean, although we survived through all-Sicily garbage collectors' strike and after 2-3 days of it the staff started burning the garbage at night, you can imagine the smell...
Does spa really exist there? It was never open.

Room Service - not available as staff are busy.
Pool - Not available unless you have a shower cap and money.
Spa - not available unless you have more money than sense.
Gym - not available (8 euros per hour).
Safe - not available unless you show them the money!
Bucket of Ice - not available, only a carrier bag (I'm being serious).
Friendly staff - not available unless you're Italian.
Checking in at 2pm after traveling for 11 hours - not available!
By far the worst service and dated hotel I've had the misfortune of experiencing. Don't waste your money, time and experience on this place. Golden key hotel, wow, don't believe the hype.

Paid internet, paid pool, paid beach umbrella/chairs. All except "paid pool" are nothing unusual in American hotels either. If you can get over that, here are my comments about the hotel:

Pros: Nice and clean facility, great seascape, comfortable and clean outside lounging/sitting areas at the main building, pool area and downhill towards the beach. Nice path to the beach with shade trees towards the bottom. Spacious room with wall a/c. Gated parking lot.

Cons: Internet was paid and yet connection was not that great (not different from other hotels). Parking lot gate is controlled by the front desk, so you are at the mercy of the receptionist. I don't think the shower was designed with adults in mind: you have to be a contortionist to wash your legs and feet.

Although service still lacks polishing, the personnel tries their best to be helpful.

Room Tip: 1. Parking lot gate is closed all the time: you have to get out of the car and ring in for the recep...

Although this this would be 4 star property is trying hard to move on to a fifth star, they have a long way to go. First charging for the pool and the beach facilities when at the sea is ludicrious. And then not mentioning it until checkout is absurd. This place is basically an upscale motel with air conditioning only in the rooms.......the lobby and dining areas are hotter than hell.

And for those of you in good shape.....the beach is only about a 300 step drop.....or climb depending on which way you're going......

Thanks but no thanks...

Room Tip: get all room charges up front...

My partner and I and another couple spent 3 nights here as we toured Sicily. We had room 36 which was on the end of the building so it had a larger terrace than our friends' room. We enjoyed reading and relaxing while enjoying a terrific view. This is a really lovely place with many amenities. Clean, great bathroom, spacious room. The beach which is a roped off portion of the beach with lounge chairs, umbrellas and attendants, was beautiful. You do have to pay extra to take advantage of those amenities. Breakfast was included and was just fine. It was the normal european fare of rolls, bread, cheese, yogurt, cereal, coffee. What I have come to expect.. A couple negatives for some: It is not within walking distance of the town of San Leone. Trip by car into town is about 5 minutes. So you are stuck with the hotel food unless you make a trip. The spa program, i.e., messages, treatments etc. were not available during our stay (only Friday through Sunday). Although that was not the purpose of our visit, it would have been nice to know that before we arrived. The dinner menu is limited and rather expensive. We ate there our first night and went into town for other meals. With all of that said, if you want to be in a beautiful location where you can wind down and relax, this is a great place.

Room Tip: We were in room 36. Bigger terrace, with sun for most of the afternoon. If you like lots of sun, th...
