A Fantastic Base for the Cycling Enthusiast

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 18, 2018
I stayed there with a group for 4 nights, such a wonderful place to base yourself close to pretty much all the major col's and TdF 'route historique'.

Niamh and Mark are super hosts, accommodating and happy to provide local guidance and assistance. The atmosphere is relaxed and good to socialise with the other cycling enthusiasts around the table - just don't talk about Triathlon's.

The meals are great and perfect fuel for the challenging riding that is all around - the porridge deserves to be called out as it is incredible!

Would love to visit again, especially as I must go back to conquer the Hautacam after a bonking episode!

Thanks for a great stay.

My boyfriend and I spent 5 nights at the Lodge in June and had a wonderful time. The setting is spectacular, a breathtaking backdrop of the majestic Pyrénées is visible whilst sitting at dinner or relaxing on the balcony of our room post cycle.

The lodge is located in between the well known climbs of Tourmalet, Luz Ardiden etc and the stunning Col D’Aubisque on the other side. We mixed and matched our itinerary, taking on the tough climbs some days and on others we explored the area at a more gentle pace - there is stunning hiking at the Cirque at La Gavroche and a flat greenway cycle path all the way to Lourdes if you want a day away from the hills.

Niamh and Mark have set a natural relaxed vibe at the lodge and made everyone feel at home. The honesty bar is a lovely touch and was a great reward to enjoy a post cycle beer in the sunshine before dinner. We enjoyed getting to know the other guests at mealtimes and sharing tips from the day’s cycling - a great mix of nationalities and levels of expertise on the bike. The food was superb and hearty (the porridge deserves a special mention). Overall - despite being such amateurs we had a blast at the lodge and would love to return. Cycling the Col D’Aubisque was a magical experience - a view that must be seen to be believed!!

Hi Laura & Alan, thanks for the lovely review! We're so glad you enjoyed the lodge and the great choice of cycling routes in the area. You guys had the perfect itinerary mixing between tough and then relaxed days, giving you a great overview of the whole area and not just the climbs. Thanks again and hope to see you again sometime. Cheers Niamh & Mark

Our cycling group stayed here in July 2018.
We've stayed in a number of locations in France and Italy over the past 10 years and this probably came closest to ticking all the boxes for us.
The rooms are fairly basic but - hey - your on a cycling break not a 5 star beach pose! what mattered was that they were spotless, the beds were comfortable, breakfast and dinner ample and varied, Brew Dog beer was available for us Scots.....even my porridge was cooked to my liking!
The views from the dining room and the lodge in general were stunning and never let you forget why you were there and the challenges to be faced.
Niamh and Mark have only recently taken over the Lodge but if our experience is to go by will make a great success of it.

Room tip: Room 2 has the best balcony

This is a great location for access to the Cols. The village is beautiful and the house is comfortable and welcoming. Our hosts, Niamh and Mark, are relaxed and friendly and the food is delicious and perfect for hungry cyclists. I would certainly recommend a visit and would like to add my thanks again for an enjoyable stay. I hope to be back.

The location is stunning, a base for cyclists run by cyclists. Mark & Niamh are great hosts and the facilities & set up just work. You have the signature climbs on your doorstep but also many other less known gems to choose from. I was unlikely to have a bit of a health scare on day 1 and cannot thank Mark & Niamh enough for their support and with careful planning still managed a few climbs. The communal eating is great as everyone shares experiences and you gain so much knowledge of the ride options. If you love cycling I cannot recommend this enough.

Hi Chris, thanks a mill for the very positive review! Great to hear that Todd and yourself enjoyed the Lodge and the area - you really are spoiled for choice for cycling around here! It was good that you were able to control your health scare and manage to get in some climbs while you were here. One of the things we love about the Lodge is the social side, it's great to see different groups of people get together before & after riding to chat about the days activities - good times, good laughs! Hopefully we'll see you again sometime in the future. Stay well! All the best, Niamh & Mark

Fantastic accommodation in a wonderful location. Mark & Niamh are exceptional hosts and effortlessly pull off the perfect balance in supporting/helping guests and respecting privacy. The food is both plentiful and delicious. The porridge available each morning the perfect fuel for the wonderful climbs in the area (Tourmalet, Aubusique, Luz Ardiden to name just three). Saint Savin is a great base and in their relatively short time running the business Mark/Niamh have created something really special. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this accommodation for any cyclist. There is a secure storage area for bikes which also houses a washing machine to recycle sweaty kit and a good supply of tools to fix any mechanical. They even stock Col du Tourmalet beer which is available to even those who fail to conquer the monster. An absolute gem.
