“A real French find!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 20, 2011

We had stayed here and liked it, twice before. This time, we organised a Wine Appreciation trip for 41 "Amateurs de Vin!" We travelled by English coach and spent four nights at the Hotel de la Paix. Our numbers filled the hotel, and each evening Christophe helped me with a wine tasting from a different area of the Herault, which was held on their outside terrace by the swimming pool. As he had trained at the Chewton Glen in the New Forest, he certainly knew his wines!
The Dining room served us with a variety of wonderful three course meals and the staff were most helpful and hospitable. This is a family run Logis which has been in the family for over 100 years. Marie-Paul, the mother, and Christophe's wife, daughter Agnes, work so hard front of house while father Gabriel supervises the busy Kitchen. Buffet breakfast is very adequate with lovely coffee served to the table. The rooms vary in size but we found them to be comfortable and clean. Free parking is by the river, almost opposite the hotel. The town is just three minutes walk away and the river and weir provide an atmospheric setting. Lodeve is quaint but not the most attractive French town, but its close proximity to the motorway means that you can get to more scenic villages and towns very easily and quickly, not to mention the numerous wineries!
If you are looking for a typical French Logis where the family "hands on" management ensure the right service, food and accommodation, this is definitely the place for you!

I stayed at this hotel with my partner and two young children (aged 1 and barely 3) on the way back to England from Spain. It is conveniently located not far from the A75 which connects the south of France with Clermont Ferrand and then onwards to Orleans. This was very much a last minute booking as we decided to leave Spain a day early to break up the journey through France.
The hotel is very close to the river in the centre of town and is located on the fairly busy one way system. There is no private parking, but they did ensure a bay on the road outside the hotel was available for us.
We arrived late. We expected to arrive at 10pm and ended up arriving at about 11.15pm. We prewarned them of our delay and they called us anxiously at 11pm to find out our progress. I couldn't quite work out their anxiety until I got to the hotel. You see, this is very much a family run business. In many ways that is positive (as we found out at breakfast). It does however mean that they lock the hotel up at night. We had the suite which is located just off the pool area (the only room they had left). The only way out of the hotel was to walk through the pool area and then into a corridor which led to either the restaurant or to the street via another door which they had to unlock for you. The internal doors between main hotel/ restaurant/ pool area etc are all locked at night. As we arrived late there was a mad rush to get everything in and I forgot to bring in the baby's milk - typical. There was no guide or directory in the room of any kind and by the time I had returned to the internal door it was locked and the hotel in darkness. In the end I had to call the landline via my mobile and the owner (now in a dressing gown) got up and unlocked the doors required to facilitate my escape. For many the lack of external access at night may be an irrelevance - we found it strange and inconvenient.
The pricing of the room was also unpalateable. Normally the suite is 100 euros per night. The addition of two very young children ramped this to 150 euro even though we supplied the cot for the baby. Given that the price did not include breakfast and the bed in the room that the 3 year old slept on was an integral part of the room, we found that wholly unjustifiable. We asked if the ages of the children made any difference or the fact that one of them was in a cot that we provided - no, was the answer. Same price whether 2 adults or 2 children. Unfair.
As a word of warning to other travellers with young children thereis also some kind of building works going on very near the suite in the adjoining property and this woke us all up at about 7am.
On a positive note, when morning came, we realised that despite some of the quirks of the hotel, the owner and her family were actually quite charming and the breakfast was a very modest 8 euros. We ate next to the lovely pool area which looked very inviting. It would have been nice for them to have delayed hosing it down until we had removed our luggage to the car so as to avoid us getting wet.
All in all this is a pleasant hotel which I think ordinarily would offer very good value. As long as you are aware of its shortcomings and they do not bother you I think you will thoroughly enjoy your stay.

This was a delightful family run hotel close to the centre of Lodeve. We had a warm welcome on arrival (just what we were looking forward to after a long drive) and were taken to the rooms by the owner.

The room was very comfortable and tastefully decorated.

The restaurant was extremely good; excellent service, a good choice of wine and perfectly prepared food. We were given the option to sit outside by the pool (probably very pleasant in the summer) but the restaurant had a very nice atmosphere.

Apparently there is a small car park at the rear of the hotel but it is difficult to manoeuvre larger cars; otherwise there is a free car park opposite the hotel or space on the road directly outside.

The town is pleasant for a morning stroll, but nothing to keep you there for any longer. It is the perfect place to break up a longer journey through France and I will certainly consider staying again.

This was our second stay in the Hotel de la Paix in as many years. The rooms are basic but comfortable enough, the restaurant very good, and the town itself is a quaint little place just off the motorway to Montpellier, ideal for stretching your legs after a long day's drive. For one night, it's a good stop on your way south. Staff are exceedingly friendly and helpful, and the hotel itself very easy to find as you enter town.

Our standard room bathroom was more comfortable than the room itself, with tub and large rain shower and plenty of space. By contrast, the bed and other furnishings are somewhat dated, and recent upgrades look like patches rather than a considered whole.

With a very reasonable half-board option, we enjoyed an excellent dinner and quite varied breakfast. It lacks a hot option, and juices should be fresh rather than from concentrate, but considering the hotel class, this was very good.

Finally, we did opt to park in the secure car park rather than in the street in front of the hotel otherwise reserved for guests. While this facility is just around the corner from the hotel, you end up driving around a large bit of town to get there due to their one-way system, and with anything larger than a sedan, you'd be hard pressed to navigate in the narrow streets.

We found this hotel after quite a wander around Lodeve, recommended by a greengrocer closing up his shop! Very friendly and helpful service, and a suite with pull-down bed in the living room was provided. We decided to eat in - the courtyard restaurant next to the pool was great, looked like it would be expensive, but excellent food (not for the ravenous as a little "nouvelle") at a surprisingly reasonable price. Car park by the river was great and close to the hotel. Breakfast good value. Room was a little noisy (church bells and loud local family), bt set us up well for the following day. Pretty town, although we had little time to explore it!

Booked this on a web site as a stopover on a long two-day drive from England to Spain. It turned out to be a great choice.

Lodeve is a very pretty town just off the main autoroute (le meridien) through the Massif Central. It's an old hotel, currently being renovated, overlooking the river in the centre of town.

Very French and the usual, offbeat provincial establishment. Extremely friendly staff. We booked a premium room and it was a little dark, but spacious and nicely furnished in antique furniture.

We also booked half-board, as we did not want to search for somewhere to eat after a long drive. The food was excellent,as was the wine, and served in the courtyard terrace overlooking the pool, with the swallows wheeling overhead set against a blue sky. Absolutely magical!

Do not book the private parking, though. It's in a tiny garage up a very narrow alley, and it is a wonder anything gets in and out without scratching something. Luckily we were in my wife's Seat Altea. There is no way my Mercedes would even get up the street. There is ample parking in a little public car park across the street on the banks of the river, literally a few yards from the front door.

Highly recommended as a base for sightseeing in the region or as a stopover on a long route to/from Spain.

  • Liked — Great food, lovely location, really nice staff
  • Disliked — Parking in the garage!!!
