No one from London goes to Nord Pas de Calais for the weekend for some reason...it does not hold any 'major attractions'. To me that was its charm. This is a rural vegetable growing area and in the middle of the peaceful villages is this fabulous hotel - former chateau surrounded by forest and well...vegetable farms. We had a room in the Pavilion Annex and I would suggest those rooms - they are purpose built and spacious. Ours was a mezzanine level room so the boys went outside...views were across fields and forests. Perfect for someone used to inner city brick and mortar. The pool was big, modern and well heated and in a wonderful room surrounded by glass. It kept the boys occupied for hours. The restaurant was elegant and reasonably priced. The hotel lends out bicycles for a token around and it was safe and peaceful and very interesting to ride around the area. And there is a tennis court. It looked a bit sad but it was almost winter when we were there. The nearby town of Saint Omer is charming but no great tourist attraction - again, its charm. We will return again next year for a three day break. To train from London to Lille and pick up a car and drive 45 minutes to somewhere like this is a real treat!

Room Tip: Request an annexe room instead of the main hotel, rooms are more spacious, modern and well situated...

We regularly drive to the continent and often stay overnight in Folkestone before taking the tunnel crossing to France. This time we opted for a change - we crossed to Calais and drove to St Omer to stay at Chateau Tilques. It was a great choice. The chateau is in impressive grounds and the welcome was warm when we arrived. The room we had was quite small, but adequate, with a good, modern shower and a comfortable bed. It was good to make a reasonably early start from the French side of the channel. We got a good deal on the room and the cost was little more than a room in a budget hotel in the UK, so we will do this again. The restaurant is superb for an evening meal too (separately reviewed).

My husband and I took advantage of the Travelzoo deal to visit this lovely hotel. Our room was in the main hotel and although small, had a large new modern bathroom. Our dinner, included in the deal was excellent as was the breakfast the following morning. The hotel grounds are lovely too.

Tilque may be overpriced if not for discount vouchers and special offers but it delivers a level of service and restaurant sophistication that makesfor a great stay. From the heated pool to the michelin standard restaurant and sumptious breakfast , it works at all levels. I would like to see the staff show the guests to the rooms on arrival . I liked the way they allow you to use your French language rather than insist on speaking English when recognising English guests which is an annoying trait in Northern French establishments..

Thank you Chateau Tilques

We took advantage of a special offer in order to spend our 40th wedding anniversary at Chateau Tilques.Room, aperitif, three course dinner and breakfast all for £129! Great value and such a pleasure to find warm, welcoming staff. Nice room with all that you expect in the bathroom for an establishment like this, and a great view over the parkland setting.
However (there always has to be a but), although I told them it was a romantic stay to celebrate an important landmark in our marriage, no effort was made to recognise it in any way whatsoever. And to be honest, although the quality of cooking was great, there was nothing on the menu that really got my gastric juices flowing (apart from foie gras) and three of the the four slices of somewhat chewy young wild boar returned home with us for the dogs! My wife's sole and macaroni was delicious (she actualy let me taste it as an anniversary gift). And I am not sure that the quality of the St Joseph wine matched the 35 euro price tag.
But, overall, a good experience and I would certainly go again ... avoiding the young boar dish and the St Joseph!

We bought a Travelzoo voucher for a 1 night stay in this hotel being only a half hour drive from Calais it's situation is perfect for our 1 night in France with our supermarket shop in the morning before we departed. We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the rooms as we were staying in the main part of the Chateau and not the new block. the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The dinner in the evening was exceptional, fantastic food and what tremendous value for money on the offer we were using. breakfast was also plentiful and delicious. can't recommend this highly enough especially if you can find an offer...drinks are pricey!

Room Tip: Ask to be in the main part of the Chateau

An excellent touch of luxury. We benefited from a a deal, but even so, the reception was very good and we were starting a grand voyage with the caravan on the back and wanted to start in style. No problem. The receptionist just took it in her stride and said they had a big car park and we would have no trouble finding a spot.for a rig some 35 feet long. The meal was excellent and the restaurant, whilst a little quiet but hardly unexpected on a wet Thursday in October, was very welcoming and warm.
The room and all the accessories were very luxurious and, whilst we were not in the old part of the chateau, the modern annexe was very tastefully presented and furnished.
The swim before breakfast was a real treat and gave one a good excuse to tuck in to the wealth of different fare that was available. The selection of meats, English style cookie or French viennoiserie was excellent and anyone finding it difficult to find something to suit their palate must have serious dietary problems.
Will definitely look for another offer and go back for a top up.
