“Not happy”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2013

We have just returned from Estrella,we had booked a basic double room but found it was at the rear of hotel with any light blocked by the building next door which was about 8 metres away so we upgraded to a self catering apartment, this was on the front and had a balcony with a view, what we hadn't expected was the "rush hour"traffic noise from the main road which was horrendous between 7am & 9am,the apartment had no heating and several evenings where spent with blankets wrapped around us,the water heating was provided by a calor gas heater which had smoke marking on outside which I believe is a sign of what could be a danger (carbon monoxide),when running hot water it was not much more than a dribble, new sanitation/water (2 small and 2 larger grey pipes) piping had been routed through the bedroom & bathroom without boxing it in or filling the large
holes which where about 20 inches by 8 inches, the bathroom was overlooked from the stairs and only had a lace curtain at the window for "privacy" I had to hang a towel at window to prevent anybody going up the stairs seeing in,a pane of glass in bathroom window had been removed to route the aerial cable for the TV thus causing an already cold bathroom colder, the TV channels where mostly German with only 3/4 English news channels, would I book this hotel again, most defiantly not.the attached Restraunt disappointed as well as any steaks or meat for that matter where undercooked and bled when sliced no matter how you asked for them to be cooked,I ordered a T bone on one of the only two visits and it was in edible and was sent back not because of being undercooked but because in my opinion it wasn't
beef.

Dear guests,
We regret to read you are not happy with your stay here, and we would like to explain something in relation to your review:
* You booked a double room and then you decided to change and upgrade to a sea view apartmen. In that period, the only sea view apartment available was the one you occupied, which is in the annex building to Estrella del Norte.
* Hot water is supplied by an individual heater, which is very common in many Tenerife houses and is not dangerous.
* The holes in the walls are necessary for the installation of central heating we are carrying out in all the building, to avoid cold temperature in some periods in winter. We are constantly making all necessary improvements to make ous guests feel completely comfortable here.
* The bathroom window faces to an interior court, so nobody can see people inside the bathroom.
* We are very proud of the beef meat we serve in the restaurant, as this meat is bought directly from a farm located in Icod, the same town, and it´s totally fresh young beef, born and feed in the island. A good quality meat has plenty of juice, as the one we served you , and we would have cooked it more, if you would have asked us to do this.
We will be happy to help you with any questions or suggestions you might have,
Best regards,
Noemi Pérez

Stayed for one week

The good points:

- the room was nice enough inside - reasonable size, comfortable with a two burner gas stove and OK value.

The not so good:

- when we arrived at 17:00 we were asked to go away for 20 minutes as there appeared to be no room booking for us

- our booking with Late Rooms stated Sea View - what we got was a room with a view of an accommodation block, a fairly busy road and a not very interesting hillside

- it's a steep and not very pleasant walk into town

- the abysmal financial administration - when I booked at the end of December we were charged the full price for the room. We were told by the hotel management on several occasions during our stay that we had not paid as the hotel policy was to check the validity of credit cards at the time of booking but not to charge. On the final day of our stay one of the family members managing the hotel arrived at our room with supposed proof from their bank that we hadn't paid and a credit card slip to sign. We signed the slip to save any further arguments. On speaking to our bank at home it was obvious that we had been charged twice. We immediately contacted the hotel and asked them to go through their accounts again at which point they found the original payment - the overpayment was refunded immediately.

We have never had this sort of nonsense in any other hotel we've stayed in.

I really liked Estrella, I would recommend it to everyone who is going to spend few nights in North Tenerife. Beautiful views, walking distance from drago millenario tree, beach, shops and restaurants. If you hate big commercial hotels you will definitely love Estrella.

Room Tip: lovely views from both sides so don't be fussy:) a bit poor wifi

Situated slightly out of the town (at the top of some very steep streets), it's quite a hard climb back up to this modern complex after a day out in interesting Icod. There are a range of room types, from normal en-suite through to large well equipped apartments. Most have good, distant sea views, though some also overlook a busy road junction. There is easy parking right outside.

Our short stay was slightly compromised by a number of issues which suggested to us that perhaps this basically very good complex is being run on a shoestring.

To start with there was strong pressure to pay cash rather use a credit card. Next, we found that we had been given a (very nice, large, well furnished) room with a small balcony, rather than the room with a terrace I had thought I'd booked. Though the kitchen was large and well equipped, door handles were loose or missing and some elements of the finish were very DIY (including the cover to the fuse box and the crudely constructed enclosure for a gas water heater hung at a jaunty angle and connected to some very unprofessional looking pipework). Hot water emerged at such a slow trickle that it took about an hour to run a bath. TV cables hung loose. The bathroom had a bead screen rather a door.

The dining terrace seemed very pleasant, but the large Jacuzzi was unheated (and so unuseable in February). To reach the dining terrace and Jacuzzi from our room over the restaurant, we had to go down one level, outside onto the street, round the corner, back into the building via another entrance and up two floors.

All in all something of a disappointment given the obvious quality of the main build, the public areas and most of the rooms. I was left wondering whether this large complex was struggling to cope in the recession, or whether they just needed a better handyman to sort out the mainly small faults.

Room Tip: Make sure you're in the main block with direct access to the terrace and Jacuzzi. Avoid rooms ov...

Well equipped apartment with fantastic views of the tenerife north coast, and the price was low.

Good location for hiking. Keep in mind that there is no swimming pool at the hotel, and the spa is nothing special.

'Estrella del Norte' is a charming small apartment hotel a little bit outside the city center of Icod de los Vinos, in the middle of a vine district. The owner and her staff (many of them was her family) were very friendly, and fulfilled very fast our various wishes during the visit.
The city center is actually not so far away, but it is straight down the hill and the return walk is straight up in the sky, so for retired people, as we are, it is very convenient to have rented a car. Enough parking places outside the hotel
The view from the rooms is breathtaking, either the Atlantic Ocean or the volcano Pico del Teide.
The hotel restaurant 'Los Faroles', was cosy and served very good local food as well as international dishes.
The town Icod de los Vinos is small and rather quite, and you had the possibility to meet the real people of Tenerife, not only tourists from your own country. But only 20 min away by car is the lively city of Puerto de la Cruz.
Estrella del Norte is strongly recommended.

As long as you have a hire car, you will find these apartments or the hotel a great place to stay. It is situated in the non-touristy part of the island, but is a little remote from the town itself. However, as we were in an apartment, the whole idea was to cook for ourselves. We also ate out - the restaurant downstairs served superb food, and the service was second to none. There are more eateries up the hill in Ampero - it is safer to drive.

The apartments were clean, kitchens basically equipped, and serviced each day - there were plenty of towel changes during our stay. We had a room overlooking the road, which could be noisy in the mornings, but who wants to lie in bed all day? TV was a bit ropey - we could only get German channels.

Noemi is the ultimate hostess - nothing was too much trouble, and as a family run hotel, they look after you like their own. We would definitely stay here again.
