I have stayed here a twice, once in August 2010 and April 2012, and both times have been awed by the calming and friendly atmosphere this hostel provides. From when you walk in, you are greeted by helpful and warm wardens and shown to lovely clean and comfortable rooms. It is evident that a great deal of care is taken over it's upkeep and has truly inspiring views to boot. There is onsite Wi-Fi should you need to keep in touch with the real world too. The showers were clean and powerful and the kitchens were well kept; in short, they have everything you would want to wind down and compliment a day of exploring this inspirational island. The hostelers offer kayaking, bike hire and when I last went, a new activity of jumping into the water from cliffs - tombstoning I think it's called! I was not brave enough to indulge in this but the kayaking was amazing! Chris (one of the hostel owners) was a professional chilled-out kayaking leader and the tour was fantasic! My highlight on both visits were the cute seals noseily following you around once you had distrubed them on their rock! Not to take away the unique take you get of the rest of the island's landscape; a genuinely once in a lifetime experience.

With the overall family and professionally-run feel of the hostel, if I could rate 10 starts I would! Thank you to all the staff there for making this a holiday one to remember.

Stayed here over the Easter 2012 weekend with a group of people for a wedding, in the lodge part of the hostel. Comfortable double rooms, nicely decorated, warm (duvets a bit too warm), with separate bathrooms (decent power showers). Good kitchen with everything you need, lovely living room with huge windows and lovely views. Breakfasts were available from the friendly couple who were looking after the place while the owners were on holiday. Would definitely stay there again. The hostel part was next door and looked fine too. Campers can pay to use the showers, but they looked clean and well-maintained.

Room Tip: Nice to have one overlooking the bay - can't remember the number, but ask when booking.

I have been taking school studnets to Dunard Hostel for 2 years and have had excellent service, clean hospitable and comfortable stays. We have used the experet services of Clearwater paddling for sea kayak experiences and have been impressed at the personal service, consideration to the needs of the students, value for money and positive hospitality.

I find the negative comments posted in August "don't take your children ..." and "horrible hostel", posted in September 2011 to have no credibility and suggest they are ignored or better still removed from the site, as they have NO groundings in the truth.

This fantastic, family-run hostel is the perfect place to stay and my family had the best holiday ever here. The rooms are clean, the kitchen is well-equipped and the lounge is a brilliantly cosy place to read and play games. We received a warm greeting on our arrival, and had an awesome time when we joined Chris for a kayaking trip. The hostel has fabulous views over Castlebay, and is just a few minutes' walk from the ferry terminal, the swimming pool and the supermarket. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: The family room was great for us, but the 'pod' on the hill looks like a great place for a r...

I loved this hostel, it has a nice homey atmosphere with a colourful & comfy communal area.. log fire included. The kitchen is well equipped and spotless, the bunk rooms are not crammed with too many beds and the situation is brilliant although when the wind blows from the south you'll know about it ;-) The owners are not always around, although there is always someone there when the ferry arrives, thanks to family and other commitments so the place is run on an honesty basis... money jar at the bottom of the stairs... if you show up and there's space indicated on the board by the door you're free to move in.. and likewise when leaving they're happy to trust you to leave some cash in the jar. It mightn't suit you if you're used to having attendants/receptionists/shoe buffers and so on but really - it's the outer hebrides and as such I thought the place was perfect.

This hostel should be closed down . First sight a broken glass in front door stuffed with polythene bag. Inside standards of cleanliness very poor, welcome non existent , showers a health hazard,When the front door was closed the locks were damaged and it could not be opened , we had to call to a passer bye to push from the out side,-- fire safety??
We are used to hostels and basic standards but this was so bad that we forfeited our £60 deposit and took to the streets of Barra at 8 30 pm to look for other accommodation, which we found .When we left without staying we could not find the warden to tell him why we were going, All in all a bad experience, and we could not advise anyone to stay there. H.B.

We are small family run hostel and we do our best to make the wee hostel as welcoming and friendly as possible. We are 3* Visit Scotland classified. Of the hundreds of visitors we get each year almost all leave happily and many fill our visitor book with positive feedback. We have numerous comments saying this is one of the nicest hostels they have ever stayed in. So it saddens us when we get feedback such as this, which totally bucks the trend. It's hard to understand how we can go from being a ‘brilliant' hostel one day to a ‘horrible hostel’ a few days later. All we can say is sorry you did not like our hostel. We will certainly look at what you have written and where necessary make any relevant changes.

We stayed at Dunard Hostel as part of a family camping trip to the Outer Hebrides. We were used to roughing it and believe me, I wasn't expecting the Hilton but what we got was disappointing by the standards of other hostels we have stayed in.

There was nobody around when we arrived in the afternoon so it was nice that one of the other residents was kind enough to point us in the right direction so we could at least start to get ourselves sorted out. The young couple ( one from Luxemborg and one from the French Alps) that were managing the place for the owners didn't show up until later that evening by which time we had pretty much worked out the ins and outs of the place and had got tea on the go. They were pleasant enough but I though it a little slack that there wasn't t least somebody on hand to deal with new arrivals particularly as we had pre booked.

The place itself was reasonably clean but one of the two showers was out of action (cold water only) and in the kitchen one of the two cookers didn't work and the oven on the one that was didn't get anywhere near as hot as it should. The room was small but adequate however the noise of the wind howling around the window frame was not the best recipie for a good nights sleep (and I'm a heavy sleeper).

All in all I got the impression that the owners were grossly neglecting the hostel in favour of their Sea Kayak touring business. Sorry guys, if you wan't to make a go of the hostel you need to give it more commitment. The Hostel is well placed and has some real potential but if you carry on as you are it'll become a one stop flop instead of the real success it should be.
