Unusual restaurant only open Friday and Saturday in October. Pleasant tasty meal with nice wine by glass. Nice atmosphere with good music, running ok whilst owners away. Only comment would be difficult to book! Latest reservation was 7.30pm which I felt a bit early.

“unexpected”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

What a pleasant surprise - a mixture of Italian and Indian cuisine in Castlebay on Barra. The cafe is something of a tardis - it looks tiny from the outside but seats maybe up to 20 people in a cafe style as the name would suggest. We both had curry - very contrasting flavours and were pleased not to have ordered starters as the one course was more than sufficient. Service was prompt, friendly and helpful, they didn't have the full range of beers but the waitress suggested an alternative choice.Busy when we were there on a mid-September Wednesday night which suggests it is well thought of by visitors and locals. Good value , would definitely go again.

“Excellent Food”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

We ate there for both evenings of our 2 night stay. The prawn jaipuri we had was probably the best curry we've eaten anywhere, no doubt helped by the fresh ingredients but somebody also knew how to cook. Complimented by nice wines and beers, and beautiful background music delivered via decent speakers for a change. All in all superb. We've read a few comments about the service, and I could see why they might arise. The man in charge clearly wants to provide the best he can, and all credit to him, but perhaps in his efforts to produce perfection he can sometimes seem a little brisk, we had no problems with anything frankly and will very happily eat there again if we get chance. Yes we had to book early but thats a small price to pay for such a treat.

“Wonder cuisine.”

Shoogs

Hello,
The Cafe Kisimul which we have visited in the past has again surpassed all expectations.
When recently visiting the Island of Barra with Australian relatives we paid two visits .
My wife had currys which she commented that it equalled any curry she had had anywhere on the mainland.
Myself had the Spaghetti Marinara and oh my god ! I'm still ranting on about it. You couldnt get anymore fish, prawns, mussels on the plate and the sauce was just to die for, being creamy rather than watery. I had it again the second visit.
The host, Martin, was just the biz. From Glasgow and of the Indian culture he had all the patter of a Glaswegian punter.
I can only ask people if going to Barra, go along and experience the atmosphere, entertaining staff, in comfortable surroundings combine to a great evening.
Keep up the great work Cafe Kisimul.

“Indian oasis in a Scottish jewel”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

On holiday on Barra for a week, felt very isolated so far off the mainland. We were surprised to come across a restaurant with a Indian menu.Booked for a Friday evening. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and reasonability of the prices, considering most of the produce will need to be transported from the mainland Sevice efficient and courteous.
