Les Balcons de la Rosiere
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 5, 2011

We stayed in appartment 338 , for 8/11 persons. 8 persons is enough to be comfortable.
We had 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms with a jacuzzi (no shower possible)
One extra bathroom with shower. Ground floor app with amazing views of the surounding mountains. To start skiing you have to walk 100m but you can ski back to the app . Great ski area although not for beginners.
Ideal if you love a quit area . You can always walk to La Rosiere centre with more shops and restaurants. Lovely walk through the woods well lit and with great vieuws.
For grocery shopping in La Rosiere buy a sledge to bring you goods to Les Eucherts.
(The grocery store in Les Eucherts is very small)

We had apartment 515 - large ground floor duplex sleeping 10 but with just 5 of us there was plenty of space - certainly wouldn't want to be more than 7. Reasonable sized bedrooms for ski resort - master had twin and small single with jacuzzi bathroom, another slightly smaller twin with a shower room and a third twin with en-suite jacuzzi bathroom.

Decent sized living room with 2 sofas, TV, log fire but v. small kitchen - again Ok for breakfast and, for us, occasional cooking, but way too small for 10 people.

Had a balcony which we could all ski back to (need to be fairly competent skier) and our kids (aged 8,9,+12) could hop over it which they loved!

If you have a roof box don't bother booking underground parking as we did, only to find we couldn't fit in (max height 2m). Reception can lend you a shovel for digging your car out of snow a week later!

We loved the resort - very easy and child friendly - super bus every 30 mins to main resort of La Rosiere (about 8 restaurants, few bars and a good supermarket) however it's also only a 15 minute stroll from Les Eucherts, through a pedestrian, well lit, tree lined walk - magical late at night!

We loved Les Eucherts, easy access to piste - about 50 metres, again tho' you can pop your ski's on just below the balcony and ski down the road if the snow is good like it was for us.

ESF was excellent, which we haven't necessarily found in other resorts. Again just 50 metres away, right next to main lift. Ski domain was great - loads of reds and blues and great off-piste all around the slopes so no need to disappear to another side of the mountain. Great runs to and from La Thuille - all in all a super resort and we will definitely go back.

Only down side of Les Balcons was
1) no laundry facilities
2) when you read that the apartment must be left tidy - what they actually mean is............ your apartment will be inspected before you leave and you must have cleaned the oven, fridge, bathrooms, taps, toilets, vacuumed bedrooms, cleaned baths and shower, stripped beds and put linen in order, wash all tiled areas..............................not impressed to be told this at 7am with 3 kids and a 12hr drive home ahead of us - managed to wangle out if it as we had done, in our opinion, a more than reasonable tidy.

I refused to then start cleaning the bathrooms, vacuum the bedrooms and wash floors as we felt that the departure instructions were unclear.

Bottom line - take the cleaning option (E75) when you check in and just walk away when you are ready to leave - I had already spent 1.5hrs 'cleaning' and it wasn't good enough!!

Aside from that we had a super time and would recommend Les Eucherts/La Rosiere as a great family resort with good access to the slopes and a spacious apartment next to all the facilities

Les Balcons is a set of 8 buildings, most of them connected with each other by underground parkings. All buildings are almost on the slopes. The rooms are spacious, built in a traditional style, using wooden accents tastefully combined with stone. The apartments are clean and well planned. The only thing is that the girls at the reception desk sometimes give misleading information ;-) not a big drawback though...

We stayed with Skiworld who appears to rent the whole building for the season. Bit of a dissapointment when you first walk in. The interior is pretty characterless. Rooms just about big enough to turn around in. Bizarrely someone had removed all the locks from the bedroom doors - you could not lock yourself in at night. The exit door had to be locked & unlocked from the inside using a key - if the key was left in the door - anyone returning afterwards would be locked out. Not fun when the drunkards wake the whole place up at 5 AM. The whole place was a bit of a fire hazard - the internal fire doors did not shut properly, no smoke detection system & no manual opeining of the final exit door to your appartment. Nice Jacuzzi bath but no shower holder in the bathrooms - good water pressure - but no way of standing under it! Peeling paint in the bathroom.

It's a shame - with a bit of common sense maintenance and a few updates, I would recommend this place. Bad room and fire security and poor value at the prices charged means I would not hurry to go there again.

We stayed in a 2-5 person self-catering appartment for a week at the end of Jan 10. The appartment was large enough for our family of 4, though would be tight with 5, the kitchen is well equipped with a 4 ring cooker, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and microwave, crockery and utentsils. We obtained a kettle from the reception as only a coffee filter machine was provided.

Gripes

There is no shower attachment to enable you to stand in the shower. When will the French learn!
The beds in the sitting room will challenge anyone over 6'. We found them too short and we're 5'11'' and 5'10". We would have preferred a duvet to the fleece blankets provided.
The kitchen units were about 3" too low for us.
The television's only english channel was CNN.
The reception staff were inefficient - despite making the arrangements in front of us, they failed to book massages on 2 dates, and their booking in process was time consuming with only one member of staff at a time able to deal with new arrivals despite there being at least 4 girls behind the desk.

Plus points.

Almost ski-in, ski-out.
Nice appartment for a family at a reasonable price.
Staff spoke good English.
Comfortable on the whole with plenty of storage.

Advice - pay for the underground parking, it could be a long walk on a snow path if you park on the street, instead of a lift straight to your floor if you don't.
Watch out for the slippery when wet ski room floor.
Les Eucherts is the quieter side of the resort. La Rosiere Centre is very much more lively.
The ESF instructors were excellent. They had a deal for half-price adult instruction for each full price child.
