Les Chalets du Kandahar
Reviewed April 6, 2009

We stayed at Chalet Kitz as on a TUI (Thomson, Crystal) package ski holiday. The chalet was clean, warm and comfortable with plenty of communal seating. Admittedly when all 12 of the guests were around, it was a little cramped around the dinner table, but in general there was plenty of space for the 3, 4, 5 or 6 people loafing around at any time.

It probably helped that there were 5 separate groups in the chalet (rather than one large group plus us) which meant that no-one felt that they "owned" the place. It also helped that everyone seemed to get on just fine.

We were staying in Room 6 (upstairs double with a bath and balcony) and in general the upstairs rooms are a little larger and had much more light. Our room was large, had very high ceilings (which enhanced the feeling of spaciousness) and the bathroom was large, clean and comfortable. Realistically, we couldn't ask for anything more.

Our chalet host (Philip) was excellent, organised, efficient and friendly. Every day he produced a fine breakfast (cereal, croissants, bread and up to 3 components of a "full English" - Wednesday was omlette day, the highlight of the breakfast week), afternoon tea and then a well executed and filling three course meal (though usually due to over-indulging on the main course, I couldn't make room for dessert). Everyone wanted Phil's recipe for bread and butter pudding. He even managed to produce delicious food for a vegetarian guest (we know because we got to try it too).

We forgot that the place had a sauna and hot-tub so forgot our swimming costumes, the other guests loved it.

The only possible complaint was that it was a 5 minute walk to the lifts (downhill) but we could have taken the bus. If you don't mind a little wanter through the trees you can (snow permitting) ski to within 10 feet of the boot room door.

Just outside the chalet is the woodland path that takes you to la Rosiere, it's pisted every night. The resort itself is quiet but has a couple of excellent restaurants we tried (Genepi, the Grange), a small ice skating rink (filled in an afternoon when it was too snowy to truly enjoy skiing) and a small but god selection of shops.

Overall:
- Excellent chalet
- Great resort
- Outstanding chalet host

Chalet is marketed for 12 people (there was 10 of us) and find it rather small. Seating around the table is squashed, there is hardly space for 10 (+ your chalet host) so not sure how 13 people would enjoy eating. Breakfast is very basic bread + jam and some cooked stuff (frozen sausages or bacon nothing spectacular) NO FRUIT OR HAM CHEESES etc. Chalet host doesn't live in but spend most of the time in your chalet so you feel like you are invading their space !!! It's your chalet - they work for you!! It is bit like open house with other chalet workers popping in and out all the time... no keys to rooms and code to main door which seems everyone knows the code to!!
Seating on comfy sofas is not big enough for large party. Rooms are smallish but ok. No table or chairs to put your stuff on.

Rooms 4 and 6 are on top floor and seems the nicest ones in the chalet. Room 4 has shower and sink and access to wc is across the landing. Double room had quite comfy double bed.

Rooms on ground floor are small and expect 2 narrow single beds and 1 beside table there isnt anything else there... Rooms get made up during the week but not cleaned! Change of towels on wed. Afternoon tea is nice but after 4 days of cakes you feel like no more cakes please! Make your own coffee & tea.. if cups have not been washed after b.fast there aren't many spare... same goes with glasses cutlery...

3 course dinner is served at 7.30pm. If you there is normally late but if you are running late - though!! they will start without you!!! Food was delicious and our host was good cook. Not much veg or salads served. NO cheese board at all!!! No second helpings so if you still hungry ... you be starving. On other hand they will happily change the menu to your requirements - vegetarian , no egg etc. We felt that there was not enough food to feed so many of us and this was comfirmed by chalet staff. Water from tap is like Evian on demand - really nice!!

Staff has one day off - dont expect anything on that day - you may not get any sleep on that night either as they tend to party in front of your chalet till early hours!!! Screaming drunk crystal staff on your doorstep!

Place was nice but make sure you book the whole chalet as it could be bit difficult sharing with other people....
Good location only 5 mins walk from Les Eucherts (blue run). Not busy resort so if you wanna party every night I suggest you dont go there.

Slopes only get pisted every evening so if it snows over night the runs are more like off piste. Great runs in Italy but quite a long crossing if you are on snowboard (flat blue run). So if you plan to go there start early in the morning! Drinks and food there is cheaper then in Le Ross. (1xcoffee + 1xhot choco E6.40 in France) Italy 1xbeer + 1x Mulled wine Euro7

Small resort good for someone starting.

We stayed at Le Kitz, one of 3 chalets of the Kandahar chalets via Crystal Ski.These are located in the Eucherts part of La Rosiere- not the centre.

As a group of 4 we had 2 rooms on the 2nd floor. A double facing up the hill & a twin facing the front. The twin room has a shower & sink in the room (private toilet on the corridor) with the living area & a wardrobe & access to balcony.
The carpeted bedroom (rest of chalet is not so do take slippers with you) is accessed by a steep split staircase & has 2 single beds & a mirror. The view from this room was amazing.

The living area on the 1st floor had a couple of sofas, dining area & tv/dvd player. They also had a selection of board games when we went.
There is also a boot room under the building which has a boot dryer. Also on site are a jacuzzi & sauna.

Breakfast, tea & dinner (with wine) were included & our chalet host was outstanding giving us an excellent variety of food during the week.

It is a 5 min walk to Eucherts for the ski lifts, school, and tourist info. Etc. There are a couple of green slopes & plenty of blues, you can get up & over into Italy as well (I didn’t get the chance as was learning but friends went & really enjoyed it). I would recommend booking ski school as soon as you get there or even before you go as I went down at 9am to find no availability. I ended up having private lessons for 3 days which were much more expensive (64-84euros for a 2 hour session).

I found the slopes OK as a beginner & my friends who were experienced skiiers found the options were good for them too.

These chalets are owned by the people who own the Ski Set hire shop so you can discounted hire. The Crystal rep came round & sorted our hire & lift passes on arrival.

One word of warning- do NOT take travelers cheques as there is nowhere to exchange them & they are not accepted for payment. You will have to walk 20 mins to the centre for a cash point, the path to get there goes from in front of the chalet.

It is worthwhile going to the centre on the Monday night for the torch lit descent by the instructors. Good fun! Also the restaurant at the end of the path when you get to the centre (can't remember the name) does a great fondue amongst other things!

The near 4 hour transfer from Lyon airport is definitely worth it, this is a beautiful little resort & the snow conditions were still good at the start of April. I would love to go back.
