“Great views and a memorable experience”
Reviewed August 23, 2009

We really enjoyed our time at Adrift, despite being out of season! The accommodation has been well described by other reviewers with access to beach and privacy being distinctive features. Breakfast arrives in a hamper the previous day so guests can taje it at the time they want after they have prepared it - this works well (but perhaps possibly slightly monotonous for an extended stay). Guests can use the laundry facilities, which was helpful for us. We were grateful to Gordon for his local advice on walks and activities - invaluable. Wirless internet was useful, thanks all.

Dining is more challenging our of season but we drove and tried Tinky's Tavern in Collingwood (very basic but fine) and The Brigand (in Takaka).

When we opened the front door to our cottage and saw the green lawn, beach and Golden Bay through the far window, I knew we would not be disappointed.

My children are in their 20s. My son, younger daughter and I stayed in the cottage closest to the house, and my older daughter and fiance were in the studio adjoining the main house. It was a short walk for us between the rooms.

The five cottages are new (they're not visible on Google Maps) and very spacious. The bathroom is large with a jacuzzi bath and floor heating. The bedroom faces the bay, and I watched every sunrise from bed. The living area has a sofa bed and floor to ceiling sliding doors that open to the bay. The kitchen is complete. A gas bar-b-q is on the back patio.

The studio apartment also faces the bay with a private deck. Our only complaint was the weak water pressure in the studio shower.

We were able to economize by cooking breakfast and most dinners in our room. The staff provided eggs, chibatta bread, tomatos, mushrooms, bacon (of the NZ kind), OJ, milk, yogurt, muesli, fruit and jams every morning. This was included in the price of the room.

Staff was very helpful with ideas for activities and arranged a tour of Farewell Spit. You definitely need a car.

Since the kiwi dollar was worth about 58 cents, we were able to stay in the two rooms for about $400 US a night. This was during the high season. I would have paid more.

Oh yes, and we also had spirited games of croquet on their course.

We stayed at Adrift for two nights during our 2-week visit to New Zealand in early March. The cottage was brand new and very lovely. The kitchen had great appliances and we were able to cook our English breakfast each morning. We had a beautiful view of Golden Bay and were able to watch the full moon rise each night. The only negative thing I would say is that this property is listed under Nelson, but is a long way from there. It doesn't look very far on the map, but what they don't tell you is that you have to go over Takaka Hill to get from Nelson to Adrift. It is much more that a hill and probably has 2-300 twists and turns and takes about an hour to get from one side to the other. It was fun and beautiful the first time, but by the fourth time, it got old. Unfortunately, we had arranged our trip and activities without knowledge of that and it did make things a bit difficult. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this property.

Thank you for the feedback. The category “Nelson” under which we are listed can be a little confusing to overseas visitors as the name is used for both Nelson Province and Nelson City. Nelson Province has two main bays - Golden Bay to the west and north and Tasman Bay to the east. Nelson City itself is in Tasman Bay and is a two hour drive from "Adrift In Golden Bay". The two bays are similar in size but very different in character. Tasman Bay has a population of about 80,000, of which 43,000 live in Nelson City, whereas Golden Bay has a resident population of less than 5000. Tasman Bay therefore, has lots more “going on” whereas Golden Bay would appeal more to visitors wanting to “get away” from crowds. The main attractions of Golden Bay are its many protected sandy beaches, two national parks, lots of day walks and many local artisans. There is only one road into Golden Bay, State Highway 60, which passes over the “Marble Mountain” a scenic drive that takes about 30 minutes. We are in Golden Bay and proud of it and this is one reason we have called ourselves “Adrift in Golden Bay”. I hope this short geography lesson helps travellers decide which area of the Nelson region matches their holiday needs.

Adrift will certainly rank as the #1 place that I've ever stayed at. I couldn't fault it in any way. The hosts were so helpful, the setting gorgeous and the facilities in the the cottage excellent. The breakfasts are to die for! Treat yourself!

We made a special detour to Golden Bay and Adrift due to rave reviews from some friends who had stayed there last April. Despite 2 days of mostly rain, it was fabulous. The hosts were gracious and informative about the history and sites to see in the area. (Don't miss Puponga Farm Park and Wharakiki Beach or the Mussel Inn for dinner.) Breakfast in a basket was unique and delicious. The setting of the cottages was supurb - essentially right on the beach. and the beach itself is a great one for walking. If there's ever a next time, all I request is clear skies to see the sunrise...

Well, what can we say. We noticed the Adrift before we left the UK but were not sure of our travel plans, so we didn't book until we were in Marlborough and realised that we would be able to get over to
Golden bay, luckily there was an beach apartment available.

This was the highlight of the stays during this visit. If you are going to the Golden bay area - don't miss this accomodation or this area. the Adrift has had some write up's in the uk press and well deserved they are too!

No point in going on, just go there.

We spent 3 nights at Adrift over Christmas. We arrived on Christmas Eve in appalling weather, but we were helped across to our room with all our luggage & wine. We had room 1 & it was great, like a little house really, with a small kitchen & living room. We couldn't see the view due to the bad weather, but we settled in, borrowed some DVDs from reception & opened the wine, and soon felt really at home.

Christmas Morning we awoke to a beautiful day, and the views were just stunning. The windows in the bedroom & the lounge opened out fully so we could really appreciate the setting. Breakfast ingredients are delivered to you in a hamper so we made a full breakfast & sat out on the deck to eat. Each cottage has its own large gas barbecue & we had stocked up on meat in Motueka (steak, lamb etc. are about 1/4 of the price you would pay in the UK - we paid £2 for 2 large marinated steaks), and we enjoyed cooking for ourselves as we would normally eat out every night on holiday. The Mussel Inn is close by if you fancy a change, and was a nice place for a drink, with a good atmosphere.

We had lots of long walks on the beach which was totally deserted. There is a campsite 5 minutes along the beach and we were warned that it got busy on Boxing Day, but we found only 5 people on the beach so I think they have a different perception of "busy" than we do!

The cottage was so private, we opted not to have our room cleaned, and so were completely left alone for 3 days, which is just how we like it. However, the hosts were always on hand if you required assistance or information on what to see locally.

We ventured out to Farewell Spit, and to nearby Pupu Springs which were good, but to be honest it was so beautiful at Adrift that we spent a lot of time just walking on the beach, and reading on the deck. It really was paradise and I hope to return one day.
