A very relaxing place to stay on a business trip. Awesome outlook over gardens and limestone outcrops from motel patio. Food at associated eatery was also very good. I would highly recommend staying here.

Dont choose Quail chalet, not very private unless you want to squeeze in a tiny space between a flax bush and a rock, otherwise the accommodation was good quality and the rest of the grounds very tranquil.

Room Tip: Not Quail unless you need wheelchair access

Thank you for your slightly negative response. We were sad to see your tip posted. Whilst most people have enjoyed being tucked away in our secret little spot whilst reading a book we have taken on board your comments. This chalet now not only has it's secret spot in the sun as well and a very large patio, that all our chalets have, but now Quail also boasts it's very own trellised courtyard addition. We hope your comment in no way detracts from peoples use of this beautiful chalet.

We were impressed by our dinner at Eatery on the Rock. The beautiful, melt-in-our-mouth-fish, was laid on a bed of pumpkin with roasted pine nuts & parmesan & had a complimentary sauce. The service was friendly and prompt, which we appreciated since it was New Year's Eve! The atmosphere was both sophisticated and relaxed. We are looking forward to stay as overnight guests and enjoy more of their menu.

We happened by chance on On the Rock, and liked it so much that we changed our trip plans to stay three nights. The detached units are spacious, quiet, and private. The garden features a great variety of trees, plants, and birds, and interesting rock features. We loved the light and the bird watching from the unit's many windows, which are so brilliantly placed that we could leave them open and still feel that we were the only people staying on the grounds. The luxurious bed is ridiculously comfortable. The fridge, toaster, flatware and dishes, and kettle are useful for self-caterers. On fine days, we enjoyed morning coffee and evening wine the private veranda. The owners are very personable and welcoming. The best restaurant in Takaka is conveniently on-site, and excellent in every respect.

What a great place, a beautifully self designed and built wooden restaurant with fantastic service and a tried and tested menu with the best local produce. The chef and owner, Chris made the six on our table feel very special. A fantastic wine list too! A big thanks for making it a great evening, if we return to the area a stop here will definitely be on the itinerary.

I was working in Takaka for a couple weeks. Our production company was using Eatery on the Rocks as our dining facility/caterer. We had been traveling for 3 months to various locations around the world. Our food was always so-so due to the measly amount our company was willing to pay each caterer.
I don't know how Chris (chef) did it, and we were all very thankful, but the food was fantastic. Delicious options and even a full salad bar. Some of the best steaks and stripey bacon I've ever had.
Along with the good food, the staff always greeted us with a big smile and made us feel right at home.
I didn't stay on premises, but walking around the grounds was a treat. Cool caves, rock formations and abundant vegetation made it feel like you were walking through "middle earth".
