I was working in Takaka for a couple weeks. Our production company was using Eatery on the Rocks as our dining facility/caterer. We had been traveling for 3 months to various locations around the world. Our food was always so-so due to the measly amount our company was willing to pay each caterer.
I don't know how Chris (chef) did it, and we were all very thankful, but the food was fantastic. Delicious options and even a full salad bar. Some of the best steaks and stripey bacon I've ever had.
Along with the good food, the staff always greeted us with a big smile and made us feel right at home.
I didn't stay on premises, but walking around the grounds was a treat. Cool caves, rock formations and abundant vegetation made it feel like you were walking through "middle earth".

Eatery on the rock, best place for an excellent meal. Very friendly owners Chris and Pat they don't even forget what you like best. Must say we go there regular as it seems to always make you want to go back. See you again soon.
Also great for big functions, went to a wedding there and it was excellent

We chose this off the web and knew that the chalets were all stand-alone and private. To our delight they were also extremely spacious with lovely big bathroom and thoughtful extras - good lighting, extra pillows and towels, a cupboard for storage for longer stays and outdoor table and chairs for warmer times of the year than our visit! Very good value for money.

Yet again Chris and Pat were the perfect hosts, we had been staying in the Cobb Valley (Kahurangi National Park) the nights prior to coming into Takaka and felt like we needed a night of quality and comfort before returning home, having stayed at the "Eatery" once before we thought this would do us just nicely. We were right...
The rooms are clean and tidy and very private, with their own little "court yard/garden" area and they are set amoungst the most intriguing rock formations (which are such a large part of Golden Bay).
On that particular night there was a function on at the restaurant, so room service was the order of the day....the meals arrived in a timley manner, well presented and most importantly cooked to perfection!! Having spent quite a bit of time over the years passing through (hunting and fishing) and working in Golden Bay, The Eatery on the Rock would have to be easily the best true restaurant in Takaka, there are plenty of other options if you're looking cafe style food or good 'ol bar type meals, but if you want true restaurant qualitydining in Golden Bay, with warm, friendly hosts then then the "Eatery" with Chris and Pat is the place!!

We didn't quite know what to expect when we booked this place based on previous reviews, especially because it was called a "motel" and we usually stay in B and B's or "inns". It was a little out of the way to drive to Takaka but we did not regreat it for a second! The rooms are in self contained chalets that are just lovely - with very unique settings among rocks and beautiful scenery. Even better - you just walk a short distance up the driveway to the restaurant where we had a great dinner and were well-served by Chris. Also this was the least expensive accomodation we had throughout our 2 week trip around NZ, so definitely graet value. This place is really special, so definitely worth going out of your way to get there!

A gang of us were off to do some tramping on the Heaphy Track stayed here the night before we set off into the wild. Eatery on the Rock is about 800m from Takaka's shops and consists of a handful of chalet-style cabins in a garden setting amongst interesting rock formations. The owner showed us the features of the chalets - heating, etc and was very helpful. As we were a large group we shared some of the chalets - some are set up for 3-4 people and some for couples. All are tasteful and have been given names of NZ birds (Kiwi, Tui, Kea etc) so you don't stumble into someone else's chalet by mistake.
The owner runs his own restaurant which is part of the property, serving up good locavore type food. I had steak and veg as was preparing for days of a scroggin and sardine on rice cracker hiking diet. Others also had dessert which was a creme brulee. We did our own thing for breakfast out of our own supplies, they supply tea, coffee and milk but don't do breakfast. However Takaka is close by and has a great cafe in the old theatre with fantastic coffee and excellent food.
Takaka is small, cute and a bit rainbow region with lots of dreadlock and organic types as well as your trad. country kiwi types. Aussies, think Bellingen/Nimbin type vibe.
On another note, if you're going to Takaka consider doing the 4-5 day Heaphy Track. It is an amazing, varied walk with no two days the same. you can camp or sleep in the excellent Dept of Conservation huts.
