“Great jungle experience”
Reviewed September 15, 2012 via mobile

The setting of the lodge is really gorgeous. Monkeys routinely come down into the elevated walkways and there is a tapir in a large pen. Bird life is abundant. When we arrived most guests were sport fishermen. Because of a full moon, the fishing wasn't good. The lodge has wonderful old newspaper pages in frames on the walls so one gets a great sense of the extraordinary history of Greytown. For those not part of a group, I suggest you must be very pro-active about seeking help for going bird watching, kayaking or whatever. Otherwise it may not happen. I'd definitely return in the future. Some of the fellow guests were not thrilled by the food but I thought it quite good. One night they served huge river langostas that were exquisite.

Judy and I spent three nights last month a the Rio Indio Lodge. Getting there via panga was quite and adventure. With the nearby airport opening this month the trip from Managua should be quite simple. One the other hand the trip down the Rio San Juan is a great advetnure in and of itself.

The lodge is a beautiful and impressive as advertised. Our room was large well ventilated and clean. Our private bath had good hot water.and the towels were generous. The food served was delicious and varied. We were given much more than we could finish as every meal. Service was very personal. Our tours from the lodge (we are not fishermen primarily) were interesting and well guided.
The lodge is in the wilderness and as such utilities are regulated with electricity and water available only part of the day (e.g. 5-9:30 AM and 5-9:30 PM). Some extensions were available on request. In that there were very few guests when we were there I imagine these hours would be more robust with more guests and irregular schedules.

Room Tip: Some rooms have AC. I don't think it is needed in the dry season.

Rio Indio is unique in many respects. If you want an ordinary experience, look elsewhere. If you want a place with incredible natural beauty, service second to none, food off the charts, great fishing, local guides that are exceptional in every regard, and genuine hospitality from the owner to everyone there, then this is the place for you. My wife and I each had the opportunity to catch a huge tarpon, not to mention all the snook that the chef would prepare to supplement the evening meal. As if it needed anything else. I can't recommend this lodge highly enough.

The owners met us at the dock upon arrival and provided us with an incredible adventure on the river. We stayed here three nights and I would only recommend this to someone looking for an outside the box experience/adventure. The staff was wonderful and the food excellent. Our only complaint was we ate too much. The rooms are huge and luxurious.

Spent only a few hours in the afternoon on New Years Day, since the rest of the guys were still recovering from the party the night before, I decided to give it a try. Two of us fished for about 2 hours at a river mouth, from about 3:15 to 5:15 PM. We boated and released 29 snook up to 20 lbs keeping a couple for dinner that evening. I was exhausted! The rest of the guys, who had been sleeping all day, couldn't believe they had missed all the action. Not to be disappointed, the next two days were equaly exciting. Between 3 boats (6 guys) we boated and released 128 snook with largest at 10 kilos (22 lbs). WHAT A TRIP!!!!
Next New Years Eve will also be spent at Rio Indio Lodge as probably several more in the future. We have the same six re-booked along with four more thus far. Snook, I have found are the best tasting fish on this planet.

We have traveled to many Lodges two in Costa Rica and severl in Mexico so we are able to compare prices ammenities, service and the desire to return. This Lodge was so great with the food, the lodging, the ambiance, the great service that we have already put together a group for next year and are now finalizing the details as to dates we will be there. Steve & Erik uinsured that all of our needs were met and are very interested in feed back which shows their continuing desire to improve an already great destination. I highly recommend this as s destination for Tarpon Fishing, Eco tours, or river fishing for rainbow bass, Mohara and snook. Check with the staff for the right time for your target fish. My partner and I caught 6 Tarpon from the 100 lb to the 190 lb range in a day and a half of saltwater fishing. I cant wait to get beack for a longer stay next time. Their web site is an accurate description of the lodge.

Thanks again Steve & Erik

I stayed 4 nights at the Rio Indio lodge and enjoyed every minute. The food was fantastic, the service was great, the lodge is set in a very beautiful area. I can not say enough good things about the lodge. I am planning to go back with friends in April 2012.
By the way the Tarpon fishing was very good also.
