First thing to note is that Kumagera is part of the Furano local food group. So all food is the locally sourced produce which Furano is known for.

The restaurant has both bar style seating and private tables. We booked a table but would have been fine as a walk-in however it was -20 celsius and quite early so probably a bit quiter than usual.

Staff were very friendly and helpful with reasonable English. They will provide English menus but I believe these are limited in number which generally shouldn't be an issue.

We went here as a last minute decision. Although somewhat more expensive than other options, it was fairly well priced. They have a great range of food including traditional Japanese food, hot pots and Chinese inspired dishes.

There are also a few interesting things on the menu to entice the adventurous eater. Ie. roast bear, Chinese style jellyfish and tofu cheese.

To be honest the rest of the meal paled in comparison to the thrill of trying the crunchy jellyfish but that seems reasonable. I had a tempura set and my partner had the katsu set. Both which were fine for the price, nothing special though. I did watch the couple sitting nearby enviously though as they cooked up a nabe hotpot.

Highly recommend trying the local umeshu which quickly became one of my favourite drinks.

We went on the recommendations of a Furano local. We ordered the sashimi taste plate- half the pieces were still frozen! The signature Sanzoku hotpot: one piece of venison, bulked up with lots of chicken. The seafood hotpot: contained one prawn, two mussels, a clam and then some not very fresh, chewy fish cuts full of bones. The staff were very pleasant, helpful and accommodating. I would not recommend this restaurant.

The signature dishes such as wagyu beef sashimi on the rice, hotpot with duck, chicken and venison are not that attractive.
the potato and cheese sausage is just a joke.

Kumagera is a very popular Japanese restaurant in Furano. It is always crowded with tourists and locals. There are plenty of choices in the menu which you can choose ranging from typical Japanese dishes to cheese. Their Nabe is famous and the dish you should try.

We had the renowned Sanzoku nabe which contains duck, chicken and venison meat in miso based soup, all cooked in a hotpot together with cabbage, beancurd, enoki mushroom and leek. Very tasty, however, there was just two pieces of venison and the soup gets a little too salty at the end. Should go well with rice. The Japanese couple sitting beside us who ordered a few plates of appetizer and a bowl of soup to go with some liquor clearly was impress with all the dishes as they just keep saying oiishi with every mouthful.
