Bad smell, old, very old furniture, mold and rust all over the bathroom, bad reception services. One of the most horrible hotels in Romania. Maybe the worst...The three stars grading is an utopia. It was bought not earned...

Had to stay in Barlad again after nearly four years absence and was encouraged by the slow but distinct improvement in the standard. Did not visit the other two hotels mentioned in my previous review but the locals tell me that although their fittings are newer it does not mean that they work! For two weeks in August thankfully the air conditioning worked quietly and well. The hotel seems to survive on Saturday weddings which last until daybreak on Sunday so try to get a room as far away from the music as you can. The plug did not fit the bath but this was so small and narrow anyway that I didn't dare try sitting in it for fear of getting wedged in! Over-bath shower worked adequately. Towels provided but no coffee facilities. Breakfast ordered from a menu included English translations. Got CNN on the television but nothing else I could understand.

As I have mentioned in my review of the Motel Occident, I do - due to family connections - have to stay in Barlad at least once a year. I therefore have had the privilege (?) to have stayed in all three hotels opened in the town until today (Jan 2010) and would at the moment recommend the Hotel Moldova.

The other reviews are right: yes the place is old, furniture basic and yes most of it probably has not been changed for the last 20 years, but you know what you get (and what you do not get): a bed, a TV, a bathroom, end of story....staff try to help where possible and if we are honest you most likely will not have come to Barlad for its touristic value...

My main reason for recommending the Moldova (in comparison): unlike the two other hotels, the Moldova has taken some measures to adress the problem of noise coming from parties in its restaurant on the ground floor (explanation for non-Romanians: almost any bigger restaurant in Romania also serves as venue for long, cheerful but often noisy celebrations on Saturdays and during holidays) - the difference in noise between a stay in 2005 and in December 2009 was very recognisable...

This may not sound like a warm hearted recommendation, but if we are honest we need to acknowledge that the market for a hotel of upper middle class standard or above is simply not there in Barlad...so you if you are looking for that kind of place, Barlad is not for you, if you are willing to settle for simple standards, you should be OK here...

Birlad, or Barlad, in eastern Romania close to the Moldovan border is a town of about 65,000 people and this hotel is presently the only reasonable place to stay if you must visit. English is spoken, credit cards are accepted and the staff are generally helpful. Don't be surprised if the beds are hard and creaky. There are 59 bedrooms but they are clean, have satellite television and en suite facilities. Two other hotels are currently under construction and are due to open in 2007. The Moldova will lose out seriously to this competition if they set their prices right.
