“You are REALLY IN the rainforest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2013

I just came back from Pampa Hermosa, we were two families, our kids and ourselves were amazed by the gorgeous place. The cocks of the rocks, peruvian national bird, very hard to find are very easy to watch among other rare birds. Urbano our local guide knew the area perfectly, he has been born there. We really recommend this lodge. Thanks Alex for a great weekend!

In a nutshell; when I went to Pampa Hermosa, I was feeling sick, tired and cold, and when I got out of there, I was feeling the best in the world. Yet very sorry to leave the place of my dreams.

This is really where a human being is supposed to be.

Highs of 25 degrees, lows of 18, humidity of the thousands of streams from the mountains, colibris, orchids, ferns, prehistoric plants.. and still, no mosquitos. What makes it even more perfect is the gourmè food of the lovely cook. Wow. After a 4 hour hike, you can only be so happy. You get three meals a day, food so healthy and so much of it. You will also have a welcome drink, and all in all the treatment of a queen. There is no connection to outer world, but you really do not need it at all. Pampa Hermosa has it all. If you request, you will also get a safe and sound drive from San Ramon to the lodge by the nicest of drivers. You will also get the guidance to your expectations. And will do as much as YOU want. The lodge is owned by a family of Italian ancestry; you can really feel like one of the family there. For a young woman like me, traveling alone, this is the true hideout.

I do not know how to have a holiday. And there, I had the 3 day vacation of my life. Gracias. I really feel like everyone, every people I care about, should get one chance to experience Pampa Hermosa.

The continuous sounds of the river, the wind in the trees. Tranquilo.
Thank you, Alex (and the ancestry of yours, for picking such a great place to stay at!). :)

Room Tip: Fitness center and swimming pools are provided by nature. And I am sure the family will pick the rig...

Pampa Hermosa was one of the highlights of our trip to Peru and the accommodation itself was an experience rather than just a “place to stay”.

You will arrive at the Eco Lodge to see the cabins and dining/bar area blending in effortlessly into the cloud forest surroundings. The climate is very pleasant and at the time we travelled at least, it was free from biting insects and mosquitos.

The accommodation itself is rustic and comfortable, powered by hydro electricity and has proper hot showers. The balcony is spacious and great for chilling out and watching the macaws fly down from the trees to land in the garden and greet the owners!

The food provided was always excellent quality and 3 healthy and tasty meals were included in the price. The friendly owners have interesting stories to tell and Alex makes a great “Tranca Hermosa”.

We went on a few hikes during our stay and saw some pretty waterfalls, “Cock of the Rock” - the national bird of Peru, as well as monkeys and other flora and fauna.

We all felt very relaxed during our stay here and were sorry to leave.

We stayed at Pampa Hermosa in August 2010 (not August 2011)

Pampa Hermosa is in a beautiful situation at the bottom of a steep-sided, forest-mantled valley beside the rapids of a river and with its own ‘beach’. Except for the sound of the river it is quiet and peaceful. Access from Lima to San Ramon involves a spectacular 8.5 hour trip over the Andes by comfortable bus (book your numbered seat well in advance). It turns out the best way to maximise your time at Pampa Hermosa is to go one way at night (the bus has reclining beds on the lower deck) and the other way by day (get a seat on the top deck to enjoy the views).

The accommodation is simple but adequate with (hydro)electricity, gas-heated showers and flush toilets. Each cabin has its own balcony. The food, three hot meals a day, is generous and based on local supplies of fruit and vegetables. I didn’t drink the tap water (I brought my own bottled water) but all water used in cooking is pre-boiled. I had no problems. Similarly, there are no annoying or biting insects to contend with. You just need to keep your cabin closed up after dark to keep out moths etc.

Because the daily charge includes full-board and a guide it is good value but I thought that the charge for the essential 4x4 transport to bring me 24 km (1.5 hours) up the valley from San Ramon was fairly expensive.

I visited Pampa Hermosa in the Spring to see the cloud-forest butterflies. I was not disappointed, they were stunning. I also saw birds, lots of vegetation, a few flowers, heard wild boar and smelt monkeys. The hiking trails are somewhat limited in scope although I didn’t have time to attempt the longest walk up to a village near the head of the valley. The friendly and accommodating staff speak only Spanish and it was difficult making conversation when the English-speaking owners were away. If you don’t speak Spanish take a good phrase book, plus some other books to read in the evenings or write your own if you have the time. It’s a perfect hideaway.

Pampa Hermosa is one of the few places in the area where you can truly enjoy nature, yet be pampered with superb food and comfortable accommodations at the same time. The cabins are roomy and well equipped (but bugs do get in), and there is electricity 24 hours per day. The food is varied and surprisingly good. There is even a separate bar. If Alex or Elmer (an excellent local guide) is in residence, they can make you their own delicious drink, "tranca hermosa", which means "beautiful drunk." The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The nature trails can be a bit steep, but the local fauna is worth it. You can go by yourself (it's very safe) or with a guide that the staff can provide.

Access is a bit of a problem, since the last 24 km from San Ramon (the nearest town) require a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The staff can pick you up in San Ramon, but it costs extra. Also, although the rates are extremely reasonable for what you get, everything is cash only, so be sure you have enough on hand. Also, it's far from any major town, and there is no Internet service, TV or telephones, so it's not for those who must maintain ties with civilization at all times.

This "Eco" lodge was exactly that. Completely run on hydroelectric power 100% of the time. The cabins were made from natural wood and stone, complete with authentic thatched roofs. All of the food (which I may add was very close to 5 star dining) is grown and bought from local farmers at the markets in San Ramon. All of your meals are included in the price which makes this an absolute bargain. The cabins were beautiful, hot showers, full power, relaxing porches and amazing views. Words won't convey how breathtaking this place really is so I have added a few photos. The sounds and sights of nature were everywhere, from the Macaws at breakfast to the river lulling us to sleep at night.
The staff was very friendly. The food was unbelievable. The tiki-bar was a must. The drinks are the only thing that is not included in the price, but Alex ,"Master of Mix-ology", makes a fine "welcome" drink for sure!! A true piece of paradise in Peru!
The price also includes the option of guided hikes around the area. There are several beautiful waterfalls to see as well as the magnificent "Grandfather" tree. We went during the rainy season/off season and it was great. We pretty much had the run of the place and saw very little rain.
