We are regulars at il Forn. But this evening was special. Our friends from UK came to visit us and today it was there last day in Malta and so we decided to take them to our favorite wine bar.

As always food was abundant and tasty. As starter we had il forn combo platter with extra Maltese sausage and 3 dips to share. Mean course we had the chicken feast, sausage competition and the wows ftira. Which at the end they managed to pronounce it correctly.. :)

As my friends were new to the place the painting were the subject of the night which made the evening even more spicy.

So on behalf of my friends and myself thank you once again.

I definitely recommend

Il-Forn is a smallish restaurant/cafe in the heart of Birgu. It sells simple but tasty Maltese fair from homemade dips to platters and a handful of pasta. The wine list is good and prices are fair.
If you are visiting the island and want something a bit different it's a nice place to go. For a local I would say the same :-)

Great place with a fantastic atmosphere. Loved the character of the place. Interesting pictures/art gallery in a very nicely renovated old bakery. Tourists will love the feel of this place in the centre of Birgu - with good food / wine in a cosy Maltese ambience.

We had the dips, a generous portion accompanied with vegetables, fresh fruit and of course pitta /maltese bread and water biscuits. Then we had the open pizza which were delicious, particularly the bbq chicken one !! The platters also looked very appetizing. Nice selection of wines.

Good value and full of character - definitely recommend. Try it out!!

Its near one of the squares in a quaint alley - But do not worry about finding the location - people were very helpful and we found it immediately.

To say that I find neighbouring wine bar Del Borgo disappointing would be an understatement; It's rubbish. Luckily there is the charming Il Forn just around the corner. The food is more traditional Maltese cafe style, the staff are friendly and the whole place is lively and fun. It's cheaper and hands down more fun that it's neighbours. Relax and enjoy (once you find it... but that's half the fun).

A group of friends and I went for a three course dinner which included a dip, a starter and a main course. Given the location of the restaurant, parking was difficult to find. Once you get to it, you notice that, yes, it is an art gallery. Half of the "art" includes some form of nude art so it might not be suitable for families with young children. Other than that, the ambient isn't bad, slightly dark, but understandable since it's a wine bar too.

On to the food, the dips were presented nicely accompanied with a bed of sliced fruit and vegetables. A side basket with bread and (crackers) is provided as well. Our opinion was that they were slightly saltier than they should have been. The starters were also salty especially the muscles platter. As a main course, I took the chicken "ftira" whilst some of my friends opted for the "tad-dar ftira" and others for pasta. Those who took the "ftira" were disappointed when we saw that they actually brought a "ftira" (which one can purchase from a local bread shop or supermarket) covered with some chicken and cheese with a hint of B-B-Q sauce and spices. The "tad-dar ftira" was even worse, with some of my friends stating that it's just a bigger bruschetta. Surly not worth the price tag they carried. The pasta seems to be ok. I need to mention that in between the courses, you can go for a walk, jog or do something else as they take a very long time, so long in fact that you basically lose your appetite.

One last thing: need to go to the bathroom? Get ready to be transported into the roman era. This is the experience: You enter a room, find a curtain, dived into two, and you cannot know if there is someone behind it or not. Behind this curtain there are two toilets which are divided by another curtain. By the way, they are unisex. So ladies, you might want to take a buddy with you unless you want to be caught with your pants down.

I think this restaurant is a bit overpriced for the overall experience it gives.
