A holiday let that lived up to all expectations. As an apartment for two, Indulgence Divine was every bit as fabulous as the website pictures and description would suggest. Opulent but not overstated decor and a real sense of history oozing out of the honey-coloured Maltese limestone walls. It was surprisingly quiet for an urban area, resulting in the best night's sleep for years! The welcome and support from Aldo (owner) and John (house manager) was exceptional. Add to this the newly restored waterfront and marina of Birgu, the refurbished fortifications and a great range of quality (but not expensive) bars and restaurants within an easy walk and you have an irresistible combination. Valetta- charming itself if a lot more crowded- is an easy 5-10 minute boat ride (ferry or water taxi) across the harbour so in a sense you have the best of both worlds by being based in Birgu. A truly memorable vacation for couples of whatever age and one that cannot be more highly recommended.
From start to finish our one week break in this charming and historic part of Malta was a wonderful and memorable experience. So what was so special?
Certainly the Maltese warm weather, blue skies, yellow limestone buildings, historic sites, striking harbour / sea views, tasty Mediterranean cuisine and friendliness of the locals was a terrific combination. And especially because we had been fortunate to book such a beautifully renovated historic apartment that dated back to the period when the Knights of the Order of St. John were active in this area during the 16th / 17th centuries.
Aldo, the owner of the property, is also an interior designer and this was evident in the mix of modern and historic elements in this tasteful multi-layered apartment. There is a great roof terrace, chill-out TV and music area and well-fitted kitchen / dining area on the ground floor, bedroom located in the former chapel, even a secret area that you must discover accessible down a spiral staircase.
John and Lorraine formed a first-class welcome party and collected us from the airport. After a thorough introduction to the facilities and also tips on local restaurants they later kindly arranged return transport to the airport. We will be posting a separate review on several great restaurants in the area that include, opposite to the apartment, an excellent Venetian eatery.
Vittoriosa is an ideal base to explore Malta with terrific views of neighbouring cities and good bus links. It is only a short romantic boat ride to Valletta and approaching Valletta from the Grand Harbour is definitely the way to travel.
This was our first visit to Malta and we will definitely return to Vittoriosa.

Our first time in Matla and we landed lucky with Indulgence Divine. Birgu is a great area for a base with some excellent restaurants and harbour area with local buses and a regular ferry to Valetta which is the hub to the rest of the Island. Indulgence Divine is a lovely space to return to each night, set in a quiet narrow street in a residential area with a great little restaurant right across the lane. The House Manager John and his wife Lorraine picked us up at the Airport and talked us through the essentials of the house which has nice quality fixtures and fittings and everything you need to make life easy. There has been a lot of attention to detail and you can see that the owner Aldo is constantly looking to improve things. The welcome pack was superb with some quality items you would not normally expect to see and plenty of information and telephone or email contact on offer if you need it without being intrusive. The apartment is tastefully designed and meticulously clean and there is a liberating feeling of complete privacy. Its like having your own secret designer retreat. A lot of thought has gone into the design and the use of light and colour is delightful with is an overall feeling of luxury. You don't need product for the shower as this and hand soap are provided. The hair drier is good so don't bother bringing your own and the kitchen and general household items are great if you need them. The chill-out living room up the spiral staircase is very bright and cheerful and the library in the dungeon is quite a surprise! All in all it was excellent value for money. Have a look, it is exactly how it appears on the website. Enjoy!
Our first trip to Malta and we couldn't have picked a better apartment. The Birgu area is charming - just across the bay from valletta. The area has excellent restaurants including Osteria Ve almost within touching distance, with the best Mussels we've ever tested. The apartment is perfect is very respect and the roof terrace the perfect place to unwind after a day sight-seeing. Aldo is a great host , and John, who picked us up from the airport ( a greatly appreciated luxury) was fantastic.
Two tips: 1. if you hire a car you can get a temporary parking permit for Birgu from local council office. Really useful. 2. If you want to visit the Hypogeum, and you should, book very early. If you fail to book on line, go to the Fine Art Museum in Valletta before 9.00AM as they have a few next day tickets.
Wonderful place to stay in every way. Location is excellent - Birgu is across the harbour from Valletta, and is beautiful and atmospheric, but quieter than the capital. Good range of places to eat within the town (particularly wine bars) with lovely walks down the waterfront and old streets to explore, but still easy to reach Valletta or the rest of the island by bus/car/ferry.
In terms of the apartment, it's difficult to imagine how it could be improved. It's a very clever conversion of part of one of the town's lovely old buildings - the attention to detail that has gone into the whole place is extraordinary. Very smooth booking process, efficient and friendly pick up from the airport and a lovely welcome pack. In short, if you want somewhere interesting to stay in Malta to indulge in some history, some relaxation and some wine-drinking on the roof, Indulgence Divine comes highly recommended.
Indulgence Divine is the ideal location to spend your holiday in Malta. It's an historic town house in Birgu, one of the three cities facing the Grand Harbour just opposite Valletta. The furniture is very tasteful with a lot of love for details. A special attraction is the roof terrace. We felt very heartly welcomed. From Birgu it's easy to reach a lot of places in Malta by bus and the little town offers an astonishing variety of very good restaurants.
We stayed here for the second time at the end of October and once again did not want to leave!
Indulgence Divine is a very special house, beautifully furnished but also a homely and relaxing place to stay, with two roof terraces on which to enjoy the sun or the stars. Raymonds welcome at the airport and the wonderful treats he left made a lovely start to our holiday. Since our last visit eighteen months ago the bastions around Birgu and the waterfront at Dockyard Creek have been extensively refurbished and the city is looking wonderful. We spent whole days just wandering the lovely streets or relaxing at ID. There is a delightful restaurant just across the street so its possible to be really lazy if your batteries need recharging, but if you want to explore the island then the house is ideally situated too, just a five minute walk to the Valletta ferry or the bus stop. Whatever kind of break you need, Indulgence Divine is the perfect base.
