My wife and I are residents in Kenya and went to stay here for a few nights.

From looking at the website it looked an idyllic place with a beautiful pool and 'luxury' tents.

The pool is beautiful and the surroundings are very peaceful. In a lot of ways the perfect place to lie by the pool and sun bathe. The food was good, but not outstanding.

The tent my wife and I stayed in was in no way luxurious. There were some holes in the tent and huge spiders kept appearing. The shower was cold (this isn't a major problem as it is so hot here). The pillows were very lumpy. The staff do a nice touch in the morning by bringing a drink of your choice down to your tent.

If this place had have cost my wife and I the equivalent of 60 dollars a night it would be value for money. But for about 170 dollars a night, this place is extremely overpriced, and you are not getting value for money.

A major upgrade is needed to justify these prices.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the recently refurbished tents. Tent 26 looked very good.

In 2013 Island Camp was completely renovated with building of new Superior lodge style rooms with panoramic views of the lake. All other rooms, bars, dining areas and pool also upgraded, therefore, these comments that may once have been relevant are no longer true. A must to revisit and see the changes in Island Camp with the new high lake water levels which make it clear and green.

I have read the other reviews prior to me going to Island camp - and some of it is true . It is slightly tired and the rooms need a bit of an upgrade. which is in the process. However the best about being there - is the wonderful nature arround you , the peacefulness of your surroundings . The bird life is great .

It is a very good place to relax and just unwind. After two nights it felt that I had been away for longer .

A nice place to get away from it all and just relax....but the place seems to be running down a little...service was good which sort of made up for any flaws. Nothing much to do though besides maybe a boat ride to see the crocs and the fish eagles....It used to be a snake sanctuary at one time but no more. Definately a no,no for children as they felt caged in. The weather was at its extreme and it got quite unbearably hot.

Room Tip: the higher u are the better the view

How sad to see a once state-of-the-art property deteriorate into an overpriced, shabby, run-down mess with disinterested management and staff, unmaintained grounds (including dangerous and unlit rocky paths) and accommodation and unimaginative, flavourless food with the same menus being recycled night after night. Island Camp should be capitalizing on its location, not using it to sell an out-of-date, sub-standard product. The majority (90%) of tents are old (15+ years?), full of holes, leaky and sagging with makuti roofs that are in dire need of repair. The water (when available) is rarely warm enough (let alone hot) for a comfortable shower - needed on those chilly mornings and evenings - and the electricity which goes off at night just as one is leaving for the precarious walk along the rocky pathways to one's tent is a disgrace. One can't help wondering how long it will be before a guest has a nasty fall and sues the camp - management take heed! But worst of all is the lottery of room booking: we booked and paid, weeks in advance, for a double room and arrived to find a tiny, cramped fly tent full of holes with two tiny single beds placed at each side of the tent beside windows whose velcro was so old the flaps would not stay in place. To charge 14,000/- per night for the "privilege" of sleeping in accommodation so basic is downright arrogant, when a four-star property at the coast can be had for the same rate. Island Camp - get your act together!

This is the sort of place that the seasoned traveller doesn't think actually exists; he or she has been caught too many times with plastic, sanitised imitations. The word 'idyllic' was coined to describe this place. It is all you would expect from an island camp in the middle of an African lake. Even the tattyness of some of it is ideal - who wants maincured perfection in a place like this. We only spent one night and immediately recognised that was a mistake. The journey to the camp was long along a good road that eventually decayed into some dodgy dirt.. The boat trip across was 'Out of Africa' and the host was the sort of 'character' you just don't get these days. It really was another world. Food was good and service better.
Looking at the ratings below, perfect cleanliness would have ruined it completely, any kids who need 'activities' shouldn't be here, they should be locked up at home; likewise if you need room service. If you would trade the small pool for a spa, you need your head examined.
This next comment is not meant to be funny. If you are a wheelchair user you will need someone to carry you up steep steps and onto and off the boat, although the boatman and staff will undoubtedly be willing to help.
Opening the flaps of the tent to watch the sun rise was unbelieveable... if only they could have had an Ulster fry for breakfast, I'd have been in Eden itself.

Room Tip: Idyllic, simply idyllic.

Full disclosure: I used the pool area and had lunch at Island Camp Baringo, but did not stay overnight.

The pool area was a bit run-down. Really, it just seems like they need to update it a bit with some new chairs, pump some water in the pool, and take a bit better care of the lawn area. The lunch was OK, but not outstanding, and the cocktail I ordered at the bar had no ice. The shower at the pool was a sad trickle. Still, a nice property that needs a little attention.

Having seen only the outside of the tents, the prices they charge seem extremely high. I like a nice splurge every once and a while, but this would not have been good splurge value.

Pretty views though!

After a few days of camping in Kenya this is exactly what we needed. Real luxury in a fantastic location. The Island has about 25 permanent tents (although to call them tents is a stretch). All en-suite and all of them with great views of the lake. Fantastic food and really good service especially the delivery of coffee or tea at a time of your choosing for you to enjoy sunrise. We went on a couple of boat trips which enable you to see the Lake and it's fantastic wildlife. Highly recommended for all.
