“The best place to have a special Birthday. 3 couples, 1 week.”
Reviewed June 26, 2011

We were low season 28th May to 4th June and the weather was brilliant. A beautiful sea breeze .Amazing house with a horizon pool overlooking the pole fisherman.Swam between the surf , 2 minutes walk and the pool. Had our meals on the verandah overlooking all this, massage anytime on a table in the garden, and then upstairs to the balcony for a night cap. Beds were turned down and mozzie nets loosened. Went to sleep to the sound of the waves.
Kumara our driver took us anywhere we wanted. A few places were suggested such as the turtle hatchery , the tea plantation, and Galle. But we also just suggested a drive south and north and found some awesome places. Shall list below.
The high lite was my was husband's 60th. We started in the pool with a champagne and croissant breakfast. Had a phone call from Sonali the owner wishing a Happy Birthday and also gave a gift. We had booked for lunch at The Sunset house in Galle.
The best G & T's in Dick's bar then Shepard pies in the garden restaurant .
I pre arranged fireworks but the staff organized a guitarist for before and then he sang Happy Birthday afterwards. The chef carved a watermelon with a candle as a deco on the dinner table,All the staff including the Gardner were wonderful, but Sugith's (Sootie) smiling face greeted us each day and saw us retire each night. He took us for a walk to the other villa on the lake. Also to the temple. The tea plantation was worth the visit with an entertaining host. As was the visit across the road to the community center. The 4 year old children sung to us and we 6 Aussies sung " Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree". They were so polite and didn't laugh. We gave them some money. We received an email when we got home saying that they had used it for a new swing and slide as the old one was unsafe. We did not allow enough time to get back to Colombo airport on a Saturday. It took us just over 5 hours. Let Kumara know your flight time and allow extra.
Must DO :-
Go to Sri Lanka. People amazing. Food fantastic and no road rage. South Point has it all !!!
Mt Lavina, Buba beach restaurant Colombo, be there before sunset, table on the beach,
Paradise Gallery for lunch Colombo. Also Mango.
Water Creatures Restaurant, Marissa beach, 20 mins sth of Sth Pt Abbey. They made a cake for Gaz that was like an airbrush..The place is over the water.
The sunhouse, Dick's bar ph 091 2222624
The Eden - we took a boat trip from here and stopped for lunch at Aida, Bentota. Also see a working gem business here.

This was a perfect vacation spot for our family at the perfect time. Our party included 2 grandparents, 2 parents and 4 kids (aged 6-13). The house is right on the beach, and the space was immaculate inside and out. We opted for the chef to prepare all of our meals, each was an incredible work of art! He worked in specialty items for the kids at each meal, but the highlight dinner was the barbeque on the lawn with the special music! All of the staff was attentive and gracious and we thoroughly enjoyed playing with the dogs. Don't worry, if that doesn't work for you, they will put the dogs away. The only items to be mindful of before booking: The drive was about 7 hours from Colombo. We were not prepared for that amount of time driving, but we just asked the driver to stop for us while we took a break and got some drinks. Do look into the school across the street. We did not make time for that, and researched it after we arrived home, and wished we had made the time.

This vacation will be extremely hard to top! From first contact with the owner, Sonali, to the follow up call from our driver upon arriving back at our home, we were completely cared for in a professional yet warm manner. Families with young children -- your kids will cry when it's time to leave, as ours did all the way back to the airport! The location is gorgeous and so peaceful (we stayed at the cottage), but it's the staff that truly make South Point stand out. All the little touches -- the fresh flowers, daily tea, UNBELIEVABLE food prepared by the chef, amazing driver, houseboy, child minder, groundskeeper. Like another reviewer said, needs and wants anticipated but never underfoot.

If you get a chance, go to the school/skills centre South Point helps support and see the good work they are doing there to help families recover after the tsunami.

GO! You will not be disappointed! It is truly paradise found and I am so glad to read others had the same experience we did.

Room Tip: Villa/abbey is on ocean, but cottage quieter.

This review is for the Abbey. I will try not to use too many superlatives in order to give a balanced view of our stay! We have just returned from 7 nights in the Abbey - family of five with 3 children aged 10, 9 & 6, my husband and I plus his mother who is 81 year old diabetic, vegetarian Sri Lankan - quite a gang! From the moment I first contacted Sonali it was clear that she runs a tight and efficient ship. Her driver Upali picked us up in Colombo - their van is big and safe and has a number of seat-belts and he is a confident and safe driver who is very calm - this is beneficial when driving in SL!

SERVICE: the staff of 6 are trained to standards that we would be challenged to find anywhere else. We typically stay in 5* hotels but chef Shantha, housekeeper Sujith and others were capable of fulfilling our every whim whilst never being intrusive. The children could wander into the kitchen for fresh fruit drinks at any time (or a quick snack!), each meal was presented with flair and flourish and the table decorations take your breath away! Rooms and bathrooms kept spotless and the entire property was kept sparkling and gleaming throughout our stay. FOOD: mouth-watering, delicious and tempered to the right degree of spiciness' depending on your palate. All dietary needs catered for and we were treated to all sorts of foodie delights. Marvellous fresh fruit, fresh fish and curries of every description.
HOUSE: charming and yes, slightly rustic. Very efficient air-cons which were lovely at the end of the day, but also lots of ceiling fans which kept us cool. House is kept spotless, beds made and bathrooms cleaned daily. About 10 m from the sea, resulting in a very cool ocean breeze throughout the day. ENVIRON: softest sandy beach, rabbits, charming school opposite (we spent the morning). Meet Nimali the sewing lady who run up local costumes & dresses and sarongs for us; go to Marissa beach for good swimming; can also swim in front of villa. We released 43 turtles into the sea and kids say it was a high-light of the trip, together with a fishing trip on Lake Koggala which SouthPoint will arrange. We caught some fish and bought crab for our curry and saw cinammon bark being peeled - all wonderful and earthy and simple. We will return - our children cried upon leaving the staff and the house - truly a holiday of a lifetime! We left our children with the staff a couple of times to nip into Galle. Our only (slght) negative is yes, you are next to the Galle road and yes, drivers beep their horns. The crash of the waves drowns out a lot of the noise and we never felt it disturbed us at all, but please be aware the hum of traffic can be heard.

We stayed at South Point Abbey (not the Villa) for one week in March 2011. Having Travelled around the island for the week before with a 2.5 year old (which was also lovely...but when we got to South Point Abbey... thats when the holiday really started!! For us as a family it was a special holiday, all being together, grandparents from Australia, all meeting in the middle and having some quality time together. We chose not to do much really in the way of activity as had done lots the first week, we just relaxed by the pool, walked on the beach, Surfed, played in the sand, ate, ate and ate some more!! The meals produce by the Chef were fantastic and every meal table was beautifully set. My daughter was made to feel like a little princess, always having a 'non spiced' version of our meal. The rabbits, crabs, geckos etc just kept her smiling with delight. The house staff were so kind to her, providing beach toys, prams to put her dollies in... a gift of a little dolly from the Owner and one of the staff from the school across the road made her beautiful little clothes for the dolly too!!!
The tea, coffee, cake, milshakes, fruit juices that magically appeared when we didnt even know we wanted them.... all just amazing... music and candles with an amazing bbq on the last night.... I dont think I could have asked for more!! We truly truly didnt want to leave, and will be back... it was just perfect!! Miss you all....!!

Stayed at the South Point Abbey for 4 nights to attend my sisters wedding. The staff at South Point were exceptional and made our stay a delight. Wedding was beautiful and everything was taken care of by management. Besides the location, accommodation and staff it was fantastic to have rabbits bouncing around the gardens, squirrels in the trees and occasionally two very friendly pet dogs to entertain us. Very relaxing and having tea and cake delivered to beside the pool each evening was a delight.

We stayed at South Point Villa for 7 nights in February with our 3 young children. We had very high expectations about the property as it was highly recommended by our travel agent, which were fully met. When we got there we truly felt we had reached paradise. South Point Villa is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places we have ever been to. Beautiful location, well maintained garden ending at the clean isolated beach, with a few fishing boats.

The bedrooms were simple and elegantly decorated. The bathrooms large with very high ceilings beautiful vanity counters. No ageing to be seen.

Our 3 sons are noisy and young. We felt free and comfortable like at home.

The staff were extremely attentive and courteous always there to assist but at the same time not under our feet. At 6 am I was served with freshly brewed hot coffee. Prema the housekeeper who gets up at 5 am thereafter took over the children so that I was able to sleep in late.

Meals served at anytime we wanted. The cook made different desserts, the children loved the fried ice cream, pastas and the pizzas. Each meal was discussed and a variety of dishes made. The meals very well prepared and would say the best we had in Galle

We confidently say South Point Villa is the place to stay if you have children as they are very well looked after by the staff who are very accommodating and the villa is not cluttered with breakable items.

We had the option of giving a cash float where the staff purchased the groceries but we declined as meal rates were reasonable and clearly marked on the menu.

Twice we had meals at Galle Fort in two boutique hotels and rates were very much higher than at South Point.

We suggest to visit South Point Villa managed Nursery for little children age 3 to 5 years or the school which teaches English for older children. We participated in a spoken English class. The children are keen in learning. The two learning centres are free for the children of the community.
