“PLEASE Stay at the beautiful hotel!!”
Reviewed October 31, 2011

My family and I (2 adults and 2 kids; 9 and 11) stayed here in October and it was a magical stay. The hotel and grounds are beautiful. With many spaces inside and out to hang out and relax. The rooms are simple and clean. not fancy.
The staff was so kind and friendly and booked a safari for us in the morning in Uda Walawe National Park. The food was delicious and fresh.
And the surroundings were so picturesque. It is peaceful and quite and there are bikes to explore the area (dirt, bumpy roads, with smiling children to wave as you ride by.)
If you want a few days to relax and be deep in nature and feel peace all around you, please stay here.

We stayed here in april of 2011 for one night. We arrived all shook up after a 5 hour drive from Colombo airport. This was only meant to be as a stop before going into Udawalawe National Park. Looking back, I regret (especially after the horrifying treatment and one night in the jungle with EcoTeam) that we didn't stay longer.

It is not the perfect hotel. Our room was not ready even though we arrived late, the A/C was a bit malfunctioning (but they fixed it) and we could hear the activities at the reception quite clearly (now they have moved it after a renovation). BUT, there is something very relaxing and soothing about Kalu's Hideway. They don't have many rooms so it is very quite. And the staff did everything to make us feel good and taken care off: served us an after hour breakfast, arranged with a nice driver and they let us leave some luggage until the next day, after our safari.

We really liked this hotel and it is definitely worth a visit.

We stayed here for one night only and were given room 7. This was on the upper floor of the only chalet in the grounds - there are only 7 rooms altogether. There's a large balcony with a sunbed and sitting area overlooking the pool and gardens. Mosquito nets are provided and they were certainly needed! This is one of the reasons for our scoring it as average - there were lots of mosquitos in our room, despite keeping the doors and windows closed. My husband spent ages trying to kill them but we were still bitten and unable to sit out on the balcony in the evening. The room didn't have a safe or a fridge. The room is large and there were good fittings in the bathroom although i didn't get a hot shower, it was luke warm at best. The aircon wasn't great either.
However, the location is very quiet with easy access to Udawala NP. Lovely pool and one of only 2 places we stayed that actually had sun umbrellas. There is also a tree house where we watched the sunset.
The restaurant provides a set breakfast - juice, eggs and sausages, toast, tea or coffee. The evening meal we ate there was ok but nothing special. Staff are very friendly and proudly showed us Kalu's memorabilia.
Overall, i would have rated it more highly but my husband thought the mosquitos and aircon should bring the score down. However, it has great potential if these problems are resolved.

after a long drive we were welcomed with open arms at this beautifully designed eco lodge complete with organic garden, lovely pool and enthusiastic staff.

The area around the lodge is absolutely stunning and well worth a visit if you get to stay here afterwards - clean, simple and nicely decorated, certainy a cut above the other options in the area. The food was fresh and delicious - they made pretty much anything we asked for and coped with special orders well. There are lots of little places in the lovely gardens for sitting in a hammock or gazing at the pretty trees all around. Worth a stop.

Room Tip: rooms are clean but small but this is made up by many places to hang in the common parts

Kalu's hideaway is a true gem in the Sri Lankan country side. We stayed here for only one night (sadly enough) on our journey through Sri Lanka.

It is very small hotel, only about 7 rooms. We had room 5, which is situated on top of the restaurant area, with an own staircase going up, and a small balcony. The rooms are very nicely decorated, with a large clean bathroom. The water is (probably) warmed by a sunboiler, so early morning it is still a bit fresh.

The staff is very friendly. On our arrival we discussed what we wanted for dinner with the Chef, who then made an awesome dinner in the evening.

There is a small infinity swimmingpool, but we didn't use it as we were on transit.

The surroundings are beautifull, it is very quite, you can hear the birds in the trees sing.

This was definitely one of the best hotels we visited in Sri Lankan and we can really recommend it to any travellers.

A nice hotel with an imaginative design and lovely relaxed atmosphere. More an up market bnb than a hotel. The food was so-so, nice but a little bland and lacked imagination - Sri Lankan curry without spices?!Layout was beautiful with a great balcony overlooking the gardens and pool. The place is still being finished but there was not too much noise. The staff were good, maybe a little inexperienced but very attentive and cheerful. It was a nice personal touch to meet Romesh for a few photos for us and out driver.

A pleasant, rustic little guest house alongside a river about fifteen minutes drive from Uda Walawe National Park, where Asian elephants are practically guaranteed. The complex was under construction when we arrived so the foyer and gardens left a bit to be desired but the big picture should be quite evocative of both the local countryside and jungle once it’s completed. The rooms were nothing special—spacious, clean and quite a bit more function than form. Our room had three single beds with mosquito nets for each when my wife and I would have preferred a simple double. Despite Kalu’s rural location, we didn’t have too much of an insect problem though an eye-watering amount of insecticide had been sprayed around the room and bath prior to our arrival. A bit of incense and some airing took care of the problem. Main snag with the room was the lack of windows and large, wonky doors (which let the bugs in) making it feel a bit like a cave, though we did enjoy sitting on the patio. Bathroom was workable, plenty of towelage, though the hand-held shower jobbie did only hot and cold with nothing in between. On the upside, the room had a powerful fan and double air-con unit, the latter very much appreciated during the late afternoons. There was also a color TV with a number of satellite channels which came in handy for the Cricket World cup. The owner, former Sri Lankan cricketer Kalu, is a cheerful young man with the kind of firm handshake one would expect from an opening batsmen. He’s also a bit of a wildlife enthusiast and seemed quite pleased by all the peacocks, rabbits, bats and birds that frequented his property. On an unrelated note there’s a decent pool, a small koi pond, children's play area, plenty of mobile reception and people seemed to be having no problems using their laptops in the common areas.

Meals were fine and safe though perhaps a bit unimaginative, some relying on obviously frozen vegetables and patties. Dinner was best ordered several hours in advance but arrived promptly with impeccable service, friendly staff attending our needs throughout—including a surprise candle-lit dinner set out in the garden for us one evening. Drinks were reasonably priced with a good selection of wine, tea was served hot, soft drinks and beer served cold and we generally appreciated the ambience of the restaurant with all the heavy wood furniture and views out over the work-in-progress gardens. Breakfast was much better than dinner with the usual selection of eggs, fruit, toast and tea. Overall, can’t say it was amazing, or that area surrounding Uda Walawe blew our minds, but we still enjoyed our two night stay.

Room Tip: be courteous, ask to see what's available
