“Nice, less crowded but not as good as Yala”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

Udawalawe is nice to sight wild elephants. Plenty of elephants to spot and very much less crowded in comparison to Yala. You will have the feeling of being the only truck in the whole place.

Nice fun experience but selection of animals and the feel of being in a 'safari ala Africa' is not there. Still worth spending a half a day or so.

“Elephants, crocs and birds...oh my!”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

Go, especially if you have children. I've been on safari in Zambia years ago, but I have to say I enjoyed this every bit as much as I enjoyed the "real" deal in Africa. Loved that you didn't have to worry about the elephants charging at the car. The wildlife and bird life is amazing. We saw eagles, peafowl, beautiful parakeets and some very rare birds not often spotted. Definitely worth the ride from Ella.

“elephants and more elephants”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

We came to see elephant and elephants we saw. It was AMAZING! our guide was excellent and we felt safe with his driving as the dirt tracks were quite tricky at times. He did not reac around and fight for the best spot as they unfortuanately did in Yala.
we also went to see the orphaned baby elephant at the transit centre at feeding time which was amazing too......... if you go to Sri Lanka and love elephants then go to both of these places.

“Elephant Paradise”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

From the very start, we met many elephants, sometimes crossing the road in front of you.
Buffallos, peacocks, eagles and parrots are some of the other attractive animal you will most probably see.
If you have a good tracker, he will spot eagle´s nests, show you the varan on the tree ( you would never spotted ) or chameleon 1 m from you.
In the end, we have encountered very rare ,, accident '' with the elephant, which was annoyed with small dog barking at him and after initial retreat he turned around and chased the dog directly towards our truck.
Driver was an experienced guy and moved the car immediately against the elephant, just before he would hit the car. So finally, no hit, no damage, only interesting experience- you can see it here :

But the feeling of big elephant , horning and running in a bad mood to your car is undescribable...
Highly recommend to see that park, especially on the way from south coast to Ella
One learning from our tracker = elephants do not like dogs

“A great experience but this is NOT Africa!”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

We came here expecting to see what we saw and that was, predominantly, Elephants and birds. We were NOT expecting the Serengeti like many people we met did. The drive we did was excellent and the driver and guide top quality. We saw a huge variety of birds including several species of Eagle. The whole experience was friendly, informal and informative and anyone going to Yala should certainly take in Udawalawe too. Highly recommended.
