“Very hot at midday”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

We visited the park and I must admit I found the whole experience amazing and well worth it. We only had the two of us and the spotter in our vehicle which was great, there were some who had many more. What is nice about this park is the lack of other vehicles, or at least the time we went, there were only five in the whole park. You get to be close up to the elephants and to the best of my knowledge, the animals are treated well and not encroached upon. Only recommendation is to go early or late in the day, we went at midday and was so hot. Well worth a visit.

“What a great day”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

This was my first safari in Sri Lanka and what an amazing experience it turned out to be. i was told that there are 2 options for safari, morning or evening. After much consultation, i was opted for morning safari, this means you have to wakeup very early. But boy !!! its all worth it. I came from Embilipitiya and morning ride over the lake was breath taking. And just as we entered the park within the 5 minutes we (me, guide and the driver) saw an elephant. And it got better and better. We encountered many more elephants within the day together with many other variety of birds and animals.

From the beginning i was told that uda walawe is famous for elephants. And take it from me. IT IS. If you are a nature lower and an elephant lover. then this is a must visit park in sri lanka.

“Do not miss this park! Go in the early morning or after 4pm.”
Reviewed October 13, 2012

We asked to be taken in the afternoon and the driver took us at midday. It is an expensive park for tourists so be prepared to pay the same as you would a zoo in the UK.

We were in the 4x4 car for 3 hours and got very burnt. We only saw one elephant in the first 2 hours but the tour guide was very good at pointing out all types of wildlife. Even tiny little lizards. His wildlife senses were spot on! Hold on tight!

We got extremely lucky that in the heat of the afternoon we spotted a herd of 15-20 elephant grazing right next to the road and brushed the car. Ask to see the monkeys. They are very entertaining when the engine is revved up on the car!

“Peacocks, peacocks, peacocks...”
Reviewed April 29, 2012

Did you know that peacocks sleep on trees? If you visit Udawalawe national park early in the morning you will see hundreds of peacocks still up on the trees. Of course, Sri Lankan elephants, buffaloes, millions of birds, crocs, plenty of wild lief in the park. Good safari guides will show you birds hidden in the trees and bushes and will tell you a lot of details about the park and wildlife.

“Fabulous day- couldn't fault it”
Reviewed April 12, 2012

We visited Udawalawe in April 2012 after hearing that it is more chilled out than Yala, and easier to see animals. We were not disappointed- lots of elephants up fairly close, monkeys, crocs, buffalo, eagles and tonnes of birdlife. We had our own jeep and guide and thoroughly enjoyed the day. For most of the time it felt like we were the only ones in the park- only towards the end of the day, did a few jeeps congregate when word got out that a family of elephants were bathing in a waterhole with a 1 week old baby- wonderful! Great to see elephants in the wild :)

Also- the backdrop scenery to the park is very beautiful. We had a tropical storm whilst there and the clouds and light were amazing.
