The hotel has a beautiful location at 10 minutes from the Udawalawe park and is a brand new hotel. We was a Romanian group and to all of us like the hotel and the people. The rooms are clean and the silent makes you to fill that you are from a tale. The hotel is opened in october 2012. The food is excellent and the breakfast really delicious.

First I must say that the staff here were very friendly and welcoming, and deserve some better training to make them efficient as well!

The Grand Udawalawe is a modern building with gardens and fountains. The spacious rooms are fitted out very nicely with large comfortable beds and good quality furnishings. One thing I would suggest to the management though is different bed coverings. The duvet, although lightweight, was too warm unless the air conditioning was turned down to freezing! It would be better to have a top sheet and a coverlet so one could more easily adapt to the ambient temperature.

The bathroom design was stylish but used a lot of the bare concrete that seems to be fashionable in Sri Lankan hotels these days, which looks to western eyes as if the rooms are still waiting for the tiles to be done! Unfortunately, water collected around the bath and washbasin and dripped onto the floor. Towels were good quality, soft and fluffy.

The 'concrete effect' was noticeable too in the rather cavernous reception area. There may be plans to do some more work here, because it looked unfinished. It needs a bit more design and decoration. However, there are comfortable sofas to sink into after your journey, and on arrival we were welcomed with a cool drink.

The restaurant was not very busy when we stayed, yet service was slow. We gather there is a buffet when the hotel is busier. Food was fine and the breakfast was large - far too much for us, We asked for just part of the menu but got everything anyway.

We are usually 'budget' travellers, so for us the Grand Udawalawe was very comfortable. However, the hotel management need to up their game and train the staff fully to make the hotel a real success.

NB. I found the WiFi signal very patchy here.

We stayed here for 1 night as I imagine most people do, so we had easy access to the transit home and the national park. The facilities are nice and the rooms were a good size and the beds very comfortable. However, I couldn't work out whether the bathrooms were unfinished or poorly constructed - our and our friends bathroom had water stains already and the shower overflowed - not something you would expect from a new resort. I guess our most frustrating experience and hence the low rating was the service. The staff appeared to have no training and were at a loss as what to do. The restaurant service was dreadful and with young children it made the experience quite painful - at one point we had 5 people watching us eat while we were still waiting on food and fixing up incorrect orders. The food was also quite pricey once the taxes were factored in. Having said this - the room service was very prompt. I am sure some of these teething problems will resolve themselves as the resort ages.

Not sure what this place will end up like as still very new, this maybe why the service although very attentive was not quite as good as we had expected and certainly not as good as everywhere else we had stayed. The food varied a bit, but on the whole like the hotel everything was very good, certainly by normal standards and not by my new Sri Lankan standards! Very convenient for safari which was brilliant, arrange this yourself outside of hotel to save a few pounds. Pool was lovely and room was too, just hope the few blips we had on our two nights will be ironed out and it will be very magical.

A brand new 4 star luxury property situated in a ecofriendly surroundings with the sounds of nature but having all the luxury amenities you could have in a resort Hotel, situated in close proximity to the Udawalawe National Park where a Elephant transit gome is also located and other wild animals are encountered in the park as well. The Hotel has monkeys nestled within its rich trees and foliage ! Staff are very friendly and attentive to your requests. A super place to use as a base and explore the surrounding southern areas.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floor facing the wilderness

We stayed here for 2 nights, and visited Uda Walawe National Park. The park itself was beautiful, and packed full of wildlife, most definitely superior to Yala National Park in terms of wildlife seen. The hotel itself is new and very good, the hospitality was very good (greeted with cold flannels and drinks etc), the bar service was very slow due to a communication barrier, however the staff were great and friendly. The restaurant food (dinner) was fantastic, the traditional rice and curries selections were excellent, and fantastic in quantity and value for money (Cheaper than the buffet option and more tailored to what you want). The breakfast buffet was also varied and tasty, Lunchtime snacks were okay, nothing to write home about but tasty none the less. We sat outside the bar/restaurant area and families of monkeys played in the trees above us, we also saw monitor lizards in the stream. It was a lovely tucked away location, and very quiet, but this may have been due to just opening. The room was big and spacious, however the bathroom was small in comparison to the room. Possibly the least exciting bathroom we had during our travels to Sri Lanka, but nothing worse than a standard Travelodge! The swimming pool was small, and cold when the sun wasn't out. If the hotel had been busy it would have been overcrowded for the number of rooms Vs. Pool Size. There is a pool bar which is open in peak period too. Hotel is located not far from the nearest town, where we had a walk around, which was great, and the area generally great, and in fantastic distance from Udawalawe. The hotel changes money at the front desk, at a good exchange rate, better than the bank. Would definitely recommend the hotel overall.

Received a very warm welcome on arrival, staff very attentive. Hotel is very new, swimming pool great, bed very comfortable and all facilities good. Still not very busy so hotel felt a bit empty but this really wasnt a big deal. Food very good in restaurant although because of small numbers they could not offer the buffet. Service proved to be exceptional, as I had left mine and my daughters swimsuits at the hotel, and they managed to get them all the way to our next hotel in Unawatuna (4 hours away!) before we left for the UK. Thank you.
