“Don't Spend Christmas Here, Terrible!”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

Good Points:
-Nice rooms, amazing rain shower, soft beds and white linen and towels.
-Food was good, even though it was a buffet. Even had pork dishes which I appreciated.
-Good location for the safari in Yala National Park.

Bad Points:
-Safari is way to expensive. Book the same drivers outside the gate or in the town.
-Pool is dirty and not that exciting for kids. No lifeguards.
-If you have kids, they can't play outside unsupervised because of the animals... drag.
-Pushyness at mealtime is terrible. I hate buffets because of this.
-If you have a problem they staff are aggresive, especially the restaurant manager. We had a dispute with the xmas lunch which I ended up paying for just because the staff were starting to scare me. Sri Lankans don't back down and are not flexible, espcailly at Yala.

Christmas:
Don't go there for Christmas, its a joke. We paid the $100 Xmas supplement months in advance only to find out on arrival that it only included dinner. NO activities during the day or anything, We were disapointed for our kids especially.

There was one singer doing the music in a strong Sri Lankan accent, bless, including Christmas favourites such as Walk The Line (Jihnny Cash), Country Road, Guns and Roses and many other karaoke greats. We were actually looking at other guests and laughing how sad it was (and kinda funny).

The didn't cook the ham properly and the pork on a spit was inedible. Very sad for me as living in Qatar I really look forward to my pork. Overall not worth the $100 at all.

Room Tip: Get a room close to the main building so you don't have to have an escort.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 night and were very pleased with the quality and service.

Location: In our opinion this is one of the best located hotel for safari to Yala. Its just 10 mins to the entrance.

Reception: Check in was fast and smooth with a good welcome drink and cold towel. However, we found one particular staff a bit arrogant. Well, all others were wonderful.

Rooms: Rooms are like cottages slightly away from the reception and the main building. Rooms are well maintained. Toilet is good size with perfect water pressure in the shower. Mini bar in the room is well stocked. Sufficient toiletries also available. Its not advisable to move out of the room alone after the sunset as wild animals roam around in the area. We were told that Elephants too come in sometimes. But we could only see Wild boars and monitors.

Food: the restaurant on the 1st floor of the main building serves Breakfast, Lunch and dinner. While buffet is excellent with a large variety of local and western food. Too many choice!!

Facilities: They have a very good swimming pool, a good open bar next to the swimming pool. There is also the facility to book regular safari and night safari from the hotel. But we found it to be too expensive. its better to book safari from various agencies available through internet.

If you are going for morning safari then there is an option of getting packed breakfast. You just need to inform the reception the night before. The packed breakfast consists of sandwich, fruits, juice, cookies, etc. Its sufficient.

There is a small lake / pond just next to the hotel and is accessible from the pool side. We saw many people including photographers moving around near the lake. However, we also saw crocs on the banks early in the morning. We feel that its dangerous getting near the water.

On way to the Yala Jungle from the hotel there is a small grocery store where you can get water, beer, cold drinks etc. BUt they have minimum stock.

Staff: The staff is excellent - very helpful, polite and co-operative.

In short, this is one of the best place to stay for visiting Yala jungle.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the main building.

My husband and I booked The Cinnamon Wild for it's proximity to the park gates and we were right in doing so. It is about 10 minutes to the entrance and getting there for the opening time of 6:00 am meant an early morning call at 5 am then coffee/tea and croissant in reception. If you were staying 45 minutes away then it would be bed at 8pm! Also another 45 minute journey after a days safari (which is often bumpy) would be a very tiring day indeed.
The accommodation is in detached bungalows in the grounds and you are asked to contact reception for an escort when dark due to animals entering the complex. We only saw wild boar in the grounds apart from the daily arrival of a troupe of monkeys which was quite sight.
The rooms were lovely and clean with plenty of space and an amazing shower considering where we were.
The food was fabulous and they provided packed breakfast and lunch for the day we did a full day safari ( must say this was too much -both the food and the length of safari -wish we had done an early morning and late afternoon instead and used the lovely pool in between)
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful - nothing too much trouble and no feeling of expecting a tip
Over all an amazing 2 night stay with great sightings of leopard, bear, deer and elephants
Definitely recommend

We booked this hotel for Christmas Eve based on a recommendation from a friend. Unfortunately a few things left us disappointed. The bungalow room was amazing and so was the location. Very luxurious and romantic. The pool was very nice but the hotel is not designed for guests who want to stay there all day, rather than go on safari. There are no spa facilities and staff, although very helpful at night, are not really interested during the day. We paid $100USD each for dinner and we felt that the food and entertainment were not really worth that money. The drinks were very expensive as was everything booked through this hotel. Our friends booked the safari for a ridiculous amount and were very disappointed when their vehicle broke down and they came back late, no apologies were offered. We requested a late checkout and were only able to stay in the room till 1pm, even though the resort was extremely quiet during the day. Usually I wouldn't mind but I am 6 months pregnant and could have done with them at least trying to make an exception for us instead of just saying no. When it was time for us to leave the 30 min taxi cost the same as a 3 hour one we took days before and we waited for an hour and a half to be able to leave the hotel. Overall, the hotel is simply too expensive for what they are offering. Luxury prices need to be justified with extra special services for customers to feel fully satisfied.

Room Tip: Jungle chalets are gorgeous...

We had a wonderful time in the Cinnamon Wild Yala with on new year's eve.
We had a complimentary dinner on new years eve and out of all the dinners I have had in 2013 internationally, it was probably the best dinner of the year. The hotel had a wonderful spread of food, a good combination of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, to modern Western food.

We had the safari tour booked through the hotel and it was a wonderful private tour. We had one of the best tour guides who was able to spot anything big and small in the safari tour. We were really impressed at the professionalism and the quality of the safari tour.

Room was really clean for a safari quality. The room was well equipped and and secure. Although there were many insects roaming outside the room, there were none inside. It made the whole stay rather unique, where you could experience the wild in the comfort of the hotel.

Overall we were impressed with Cinnamon Wild. Friendly service, clean rooms, good shower, comfy bed and a good selection of food. We arranged our safari through the hotel and could not have been happier. I would advise, for comfort to go on the luxury jeep it was just me and my husband and a superb tracker and driver. We saw 5 leopards in total!

What left us very sad was the amount of dogs that were there and severely malnourished and we did not like the way the staff through stones at them to scare them away. We like many Brits are real dog lovers and we really feel for them we spoke with the manager to see if there was anything they could do to be told that someone co es round and catches them and they are killed!!!!!! I appreciate that they do not want lots of dogs hanging around the hotel but there are things they could do to help the cause.

It was also the only hotel throughout our trip that did not do anything special or any gestures for honeymooners.

Another tip watch the monkeys on the roof bar they attacked us, not a pleasant experience.

It was yet another pleasant and a comfortable stay at Cinnamon Wild within a gap of just 8 months. We had everything we wanted and were well looked after. From the General manager downwards! everyone was equally keen on giving you the best? Rooms were clean and neat, food was excellent and covered a wide spread during all meals. I would recommend this hotel to whoever who wish to have a restful stay and experience a safari at Yala. We will continue to patronize this hotel when ever We feel like taking stroll at Yala National park.
