We spent an amazing two weeks at Les Couges in summer 2016.
The house is beautiful and the views from the pool are magnificent. Each room is beautiful decorated and comfortable and there is just SO much space - even with a big group it never felt crowded.
.
The outdoor kitchen is the best feature (run a close second by the games room) - it is entirely stocked with everything you need and allows the group to spend all day outside without ferrying food in and out. With seven children in our party it was invaluable to be able to watch them in the pool and prepare food at the same time.
Evenings were made extremely peaceful by the large cinema for kids to watch movies while we dined outside. A couple of evenings we hired the suggested local cooks who came in and cooked incredible (and relatively inexpensive) 4 course meals. Then even brought along pairing wines. I would highly recommend it.
We also took advice in another review and booked the local masseuse to come in and she gave us fantastic massages outside under the trees.
It was the perfect summer house for a large group with children (so much to do at the house to keep everyone entertained) - I look forward to returning again one day
.
The house is just like the photographs, beautifully decorated and with a lot of charm. Ideal for families with kids, ours absolutely loved the games room and swings and played with everything! The outdoor kitchen was great even if it was still a bit cold in March and the house also has a fireplace for colder evenings. The house is very well equipped with good quality kitchen utensils and bedding etc.
The region is lovely as well, the villages charming and the countryside quiet. We will definitely come back!!

Les Couges is an exceptional gite in the heart of the Dordogne region of France. Everything has been thought of. The outside space is the best we have ever had whilst holidaying in France - large pool, play area for children, lovely long dining table, dishwasher, BBQ, hob, large fridge freezer, comfortable sun loungers....the list goes on. We were lucky enough to enjoy gorgeous weather, but there is also a large cinema room and games room should you be forced to stay indoors. Our daughters really enjoyed alternating between the pool and the little play area outside with a swing set, slide, monkey bars and sand.
The rooms are beautifully furnished and decorated, with another well appointed kitchen indoors should you need it. Three shower rooms/bathrooms as well as another toilet near the swimming pool ensures that there is room for all! Just be warned that the attic room whilst lovely and spacious has no door, so noise from downstairs and lower rooms does carry upwards.....the little twin bedded room off it was perfect for children though, very comfortable and they slept like logs!
Peace and quiet is provided - the pool area looks out over fields, which were graced by a family of deer every evening.
The surrounding area is stunning - lots of little bastide towns, all very pretty. Highlights for us were Sarlat and Domme, and the market at Monpazier - worth getting there early to avoid the crowds!!

Wonderful old farm house (ex tobacco farm) in local stone with numerous adjacent barns gradually being turned into delightful extra accommodation. Brilliant (extra) outdoor kitchen next to the pool is a real winner. Extremely comfortable rooms in main house that are full of character. We had a brilliant 8 day stay with 2 other family members and visited many lovely old bastide towns with their charming market squares, numerous excellent cafés and restaurants. We discovered many excellent walks in the wooded vicinity. The property is well suited for children with table tennis, pool, lots of space for roaming and, for all, a beautiful home cinema in an old barn.
This is the first time I’d ever been to this region in France and it exceeded my expectations. This part of the world is enchanting. Lovely medieval villages dotted around the countryside and such a delight to explore. We had a car and found AMAZING towns every day to marvel at - with fantastic antiques, markets (amazing food and wine!), restaurants, rivers, castles, shops, walks. We had lots of picnics and lovely lunches at the beautiful house in their outdoor pool area overlooking the countryside.
The house is comfy, eclectic with little touches of loveliness everywhere. Beautiful stonework, great fireplace, roses climbing up walls, lovely bedrooms etc. The absolute stand out was their cinema. A big room with stone walls opposite the main part of the house decked out with old world charm (velvet and leather arm chairs/couches, chandelier, tapestries etc) but more importantly the best projector, screen, sound which covers almost an entire wall. They have a selection of movies (Avatar, Hobbit, Man of Steel, Julia and Julie, etc) but bring your own discs or USBs. Delightful to be tucked under a blanket and immersed in a top quality cinema experience (and far enough from the main house to turn up the volume without disturbing anyone).
Swimming pool area is great - outdoor kitchen means you’re not having to walk through to the inside kitchen to fetch things for lunch overlooking the fields and swimming pool.
Loved using their bikes and riding round the countryside and discovering beautiful Montpazier by bike (only 6 or 7 kms away). I could have spent months exploring around this section of the French countryside and I look forward to going back.
My only complaint is that flying to France is a pain from Australia, the rest was just heaven.

My husband and I have just spent a glorious week in the Dordogne region of France with seven of our friends from Australia.
I can highly recommend La barriere les Couges, a beautiful farmhouse built in 1896, situated about six kilometers from the bastide town of Monpazier, one of France's listed beautiful villages. What made the stay so special, apart from the farmhouse itself, were the series of outbuildings surrounding it. Despite having a stainless steel kitchen inside, we used the wonderful covered outdoor area beside the pool that was complete with lounges, a table that easily seated twelve and a fully equipped kitchen that included a dishwasher. It was just amazing to relax there of an evening, enjoying the food and wine collected on our travels in the surrounding countryside.
Next to this area, and most amazing of all was the home theater. This large stone room had a white gravel floor, comfortable chairs, very large screen and chandelier. The sound and projection equipment was first class and there were many DVD,s to choose from. Definitely a bonus. We had perfect weather but this would be a great addition on rainy days.
The five bedrooms and two bed children's room, three bathrooms, comfortable loungeroom with fireplace and all the extra amenities made for a brilliant stay in an absolutely gorgeous part of France. Grant and Diane Blaxell

My wife and I visited in June and wanted a quite week together on our own, so chose to return to La Barriere les couges for a rejuvinating autumn break. Lots of exciting additions to the furniture and decorations since our first visit - everything worked well for the two of us.
Shopping in Montpazier and Beaumont again provided our food requirments for our mainly 'dining-in',- even in October it was warm enough to prepare and eat our evening meal beside the pool (lunch too). This facility is a great asset to the property and the rural setting adds so much, looking across the meadow and sunflowers to the oak woodland beyond.
We treated ourselves to an outstanding dinner one evening at Edward 1er Restaurent in Montpazier - recently refurbished with a new dining room. We will certainly return to enjoy the best of French cuisine prepared by talented Dutch joint owner and chef.
We were thrilled to discover that Villarieal was holding a day long riding event and equestrian show, last Sunday, amazing value for money. A good example of how important it is to look out local events and markets to enjoy - there are plenty to sample even at this time of the year.
