“Every year a little bit less”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012 via mobile

We have been regular guests at Le Bailli for almost 10 years, with yearly visits. It is very disappointing to see that they have not been able to maintain the level of service and attention to details that was present during the first

Lets start:

The location is absolutely fantastic. Set on a cliff with unobstructed seaviews, this must be one of the prime locations along the Cote Dazur. The village is quiet in a very pleasing way ( just a shame that Maurin de Maures became a commercial tourist trap typemrestaurant. This used to be one of the best local spots to visit, thanks to the previous owner and his team) the private beach and swimming pool have all the qualities to cater for a relaxing holiday in all privacy.

The hotel itself is nicely decorated. The rooms are becoming a bit worn out, with matrasses laying through. It is strange, in this price category, to see plain blankets and covers on a standard mattress instead of the luxury bedding one would expect. The bathrooms feature a large bathtub but no shower and are relatively small.

For info: room setup has been unchanged since 2003.

The main restaurant (La Praya) has a nice interior, but despite the hotel promoting its gastronomical qualities, the food quality is not up to expectations. Certainly not when looking at the price charged.
Bakfast is served there as well, and is of a very good quality. ( tip: book room and breakfast only)

During the day lunch and snacks are available at L'escale down at the beach and at the pool bar restaurant. Forget about the pool bar restaurant, as they offer what looks like a left-over buffet only.

L'Escale on the other hand has a niceand light menu available, with accomodating staff and great views! Only downside is that they only have limitted seats available, so making a reservation is a must, even being a guest in the 4 star hotel.

Refreshments are available from the poolbar, but they stop serving at 1700! So for those wanting to have a sunset apero by the pool, tough luck! We asked a drink at 1720 and got a plain NO as answer, and were directed to the main restaurant. (not a place to sit wearing swimshorts and bikini)

The GYM: an absolute joke and not even worthwhile having a look at. While it used to be equipped properly and at a location by the pool, they have moved this now to the. Top floor in what seems to be a broom closet. Old, dirty and neglected!

Staff: some are outstanding and provide all services required, but most are cold and almost unfriendly. You would think that after all these years they would keep track of regular guests, no? Well think again. And because the hotel's public is dominantly 50+, We more and more got the impression that no attention was given to us just because we are much younger. ( despite the fact that we booked a more expensive room for a long period of time with clear signs that we would be spending more than usual if treated well).

Conclusion

So Yes, the hotel truly has some great things to offer and people visitting for the first time might be pleased, but for us after seeing years of declined levels of service, I am afraid this was our last visit. We will mis the overall setting, but for this amount of money we have found better places in the same region. We lost our safe haven at the Cote Dazur, but moved on.

Even though we knew the hotel from having drinks on the terrace in past years, we were quite unprepared for the sheer beauty of overlooking the sea from a distance of a few metres from our room.. We were on the second floor-ideal location for the restaurant, the pool and reception.
Service is impeccable and food is very good. We wish we could have stayed longer..

I do not know how the hotel star system works but why this is a four star hotel is beyond me - this is a country mile better than many five stars I have. It may not have a gym but with a pool and sea less than one minute from your room why would you want one.

The service is perfect, welcoming and helpful. Every one speaks great English and they are happy to joke around or play it straight, you really get the sense that people enjoy working here and are proud of what they have.

The rooms are fantastic with amazing views over the sea and pool. The restaurants very good, although pricey and we did have one OK meal that was on the lower price menu de jour.

The beach is literally another flight of stairs down from the pool at the bottom of which is the second of the two restaurants and an attendant preparing the sun loungers and towels. The smallish beach is very secluded and is split in two, with the half by the hotel being private and the rest public, but there never seemed to be too many people on the public part of the beach; there is another beach 50 yards away with another, cheaper restaurant, that is fully public but once again it seems to be visited only by locals.

It is important to note that the hotel is not in Canadel but in Rayol which is a one horse town a couple of miles further away. This means that there are no places that can really be visited, apart from the gardens, other than by car. The hotel is also down a very sharp hill which makes walking to the town hard work.

I should also point out that a lot of the negative reviews on this hotel are, frequently about the related, but different, 3 star Terrace and Residence hotels of the same name. I cannot comment on these hotels and these comments shouldn't really be on the same page as this hotel.

if you want a quiet place to relax and read then there is no where better; if you like a bit of party life then this is probably not the best place.

Room Tip: They are all good but the ones on the ground floor open out to the pool, which some people may like.

In contrast to the beautiful Province bastide we had stayed in the previous 2 nights, this was a contemporary hotel but with all the key ingredients for a perfect night by the sea. Warmly welcomed into our 4th floor junior suite, with stunning view from a large balcony right out onto the Med which was just below us, and a large pool in between. Great pool bar and restaurant too and again, superb local rose wine, served ice cold and the perfect blush colour. Pool side service too so you are never without a drink in your hand if you so wish. 2 restaurants - a less formal one at beach level and their restaurant gastronomique on the terrace overlooking the sea. We did not dine at the hotel however and chose to drive into St Tropez for the night which is only 25 minutes away. And returned to have a nightcap on the balcony with the sound of the waves lapping the beach below and the light of the nearby lighthouse bouncing off the sea. We were only there for one night but I would suggest it's a fantastic base for couples or families looking to spend a longer holiday in one place as well as being close to other spots like St Tropez and Ramatuelle.

Room Tip: The higher you are, the better the view!

Found this lovely hotel by accident travelling around the coast. Stayed one night in June. Lovely receptionist gave us the tour round and explained all the areas of the hotel before showing us into Room 547, which had an amazing view from our balcony over the crystal blue sea. Room was well equiped with comfortable bed and lots of little luxury items. Private beach with sunloungers were a welcome sight after our long day traveling. Dinner was served in the lovely resteraunt which again had lovely views and a realxed atmosphere. Our two course dinner was divine and the waitresses knowlege and the description of the dishes were helpful in our choice. The wine water also helped us in choosing our locally produced wine. Breakfast was a massive spread of anything you could wish for. I would love to return for a longer stay if our budget allowed. All the staff were very helpful and polite without being stuffy or overfriendly. Free wifi was also included. I would thourghly recomend this hotel for a treat.

We spent four nights at the Bailli de Suffren and enjoyed every moment. Our room 219 oversaw the beautiful and quiet bay just above the hotel's beach. From the moment we arrived the staff was very friendly, always greeted and helpful. The food at the breakfast buffet as well as the room service was perfect. Swimming at the beach was great. The beach itself isn't huge but it will do if you don't want to spend all day there. I can highly recommend this quiet little cosy place.
