“Lovely location, poor value for money.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2013

The chateau is very attractive with a nice garden and the location on the shore of Lake Geneva is very beautiful. The standard room was decidedly average and expensive. The food was very nice but the wine prices were outrageous for a pretty ordinary listing. Breakfast was O.K. without being exceptional. Overall this Hotel is poor value for money and I doubt that we would stay there again. If you happen to stay on a Saturday there is almost always a wedding reception which takes over the whole lakeside and most of the service .

Room Tip: The standard rooms are nothing to shout about but upgrading is mighty expensive.

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel on TripAdvisor. We are delighted that you found our location convenient and enjoyed our restaurant.

Regarding the rates we propose, you must have probably enjoyed our 12th century Castle and its ancient woodwork, the mosaics of the XVIth and XVII th century in the rooms of the ground floor, the monumental fireplace …. This beautiful setting and the authenticity of its furniture has a cost and needs substantial maintenance work.

I hope you will choose to stay at our hotel again during your next trip and thus giving us the opportunity to offer you a refreshing experience at Chateau de Coudrée.

Best Regards

The family & the team of Château de Coudrée

Château de la Coudrée is an 11th century chateau/castle which was completely over run when used as a farm for many years. You can see where the old moat was and an arch in the front wall showed where the lake water used to come in under the castle.
It has been "restored" in a very eclectic manner using Spanish, Italian and French pieces from the 15th, 16 and other centuries. Despite this it seems to fit together well. Room 1 which runs across the front of the building and overlooks the lake has great views. It is unusually narrow and long as it seems to have been converted from what was originally a long corridor but the novelty effect and the views are worth a visit.
The restaurant is good with good quality food and wine. The petit dejeuner bar is also well stocked but don't expect an early breakfast. There is a pool outside but it was too cold when we were there.
Outside to the East there is a path which runs past a forest on the way to some of the local restaurants. There are tracks into the forest with an 8 way meeting in the middle - all a little "middle earth" like :-) Worth exploring but easy to miss.

Room Tip: Room 1 has good views and had better wireless internet connectivity than some of the other rooms, wh...

Hard to beat the location - historic castle, own shore and jetty on pretty Lac Leman. The rooms are not cheap, even the standard ones. Ours was attractively decorated, and have to accept that being a historic building the window was above eye level, but was quite cramped and the blanket on the bed was the cheapest and most vulgar one can imagine.
No lifts of course and several flights of stairs and long corridors to the room. And not even an offer of assistance with our cases.
The stone dining room was full of character, but everyone dined on the terrace as it was warm. I enjoyed the lake fish, but otherwise the meal was not quite up to the three Michelin knives and forks, doubtless awarded because of the building and location.
Sadly, the meal ended on a sour note. The wines were very expensive, rather more so than three higher rated Michelin establishments we had recently visited. I opted for the cheaper vintage of a Loire red wine, and although this wasn't marked as being out of stock as other wines were, I was told they had no more - but the other vintage, nearly 40% dearer was wonderful and would I like that. Feeling slightly manipulated, I said yes. The waiter returned with a more recent vintage (2010) of the same wine which did not appear on the wine list at all. I accepted this and tasted it. I had my doubts, but it was not bad enough to refuse. It tasted immature and did not improve with breathing. So after the meal I appraised the sommelier of this and asked him how much he proposed to charge, imagining he would charge the lesser amount. He insisted on charging the higher amount despite my protest, repeated to the receptionist the next day when we paid the bill. Even if he had thought I was wrong, very poor service (and judgment) to insist on the extra and create a dissatisfied customer (I told the hotel I would make public my discontent).

Room Tip: Our standard room was rather gloomy and not very large. Huge price hike to the next grade, though. T...

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking the time and effort to post your review on this site.
We are delighted to read that you found the building and the location convenient.

However, we are truly sorry to hear that there were some aspects of your stay that did not meet your expectations and more precisely that our sommelier service was not to your liking. Our team work hard to ensure a better service and our sommelier, who is very appreciated by our guests, do try to offer a wide selection of wine choices to our hosts. We utterly regret we could not rectify the discord during your stay.

Please do contact us so that we can make you feel better regarding your last stay with us.

Best regards,

If you are in the area, please do stop to take pictures. Château de la Coudrée is a beautiful little castle on Lake Geneva. Go in the gardens and have some tea on the Terrace. Tea but no desert.

If you are looking for gastronomy, do not stop here. Even though we discussed with the Chef before, the lunch was far from acceptable. Quantity and Quality were absent. Probably there was no one in the kitchen since there were not so many customers in the restaurant. The Egg was ver plain, the Fera fish did not look very fresh and overcooked with a dominant cheap beet taste. I know vegetables are expensive, especially with the cold spring the region was having.

The hotel web site mentions a Chef Patissier to lure customers in the cooking lessons. He must have been on vacation. The place was almost empty, yet, there were out of chocolate desert. We saw banana soufflé on the menu so we asked the Chef if the Pastry Chef could do a simple chocolate soufflé. The request was before the meal so there was plenty of time. The answer we received was a clear 'NO', maybe no more chocolate in the kitchen. Or maybe there was no Chef in the kitchen as the meal and its presentation could have been prepared by anyone.

Dear Sir,

I remember we met, you were seated with two guests, and we spoke French.
We had an interesting conversation about local products, vegetables from our garden (beetroot, jerusalem artichoke, etc).
I confirm tha the Chef, that I am, was in the kitchen to cook for you, as every day. The Fera fish comes from the lake and I can assure you that it is always fresh. The fisherman I work with comes every 3 days to deliver the fish taken in the morning. We serve only products chosen for their quality.

Our pastry cook prepares bread, desserts, celebration cakes etc. He work every day at the restaurant. When you ask about the Chocolate soufflé, I did not understand that the Banana soufflé served with the chocolate sauce was not your taste. I apologize as I did not take seriously your question about the chocolate soufflé, as we also talked about the macaron prepared with Apples labellised from Haute Savoie,.. and other desserts from the menu. The pastry cook would have been honored to welcome you in the pastry and improvise the soufflé with you. What's a pity!

We had three other tables of several customers during this lunch. Winter is a calm season for restaurants near the lake and we are one of the very few opened in this area at the time of the year. Summer is more lively. But I think the atmosphere in the historical restaurant room (mosaic XVIIth, wooden panel from the Renaissance on the walls, big chimney etc...) has also its charms...

I am really sorry and surprised of your disappointment, as we had a good contact when your were at Château de Coudrée....

I hope you will have another occasion to visit us, and change your mind. We do our profession with our heart.
I take note of your remarks concerning quantity. There is a mention on the menu about quantities. We are concerned by people who are used to eat more than the average. It is important to know it. Sir, believe that we work to please our guests, this historical place is a passion. We are here to answer your wishes.

The château is gorgeous and the location, by the lake, is perfect. I loved the dinner and the breakfast (the breakfast room was gorgeous).

Though, the furniture in the rooms is faded. There is a lack of harmony in the colours.
No duvet in the bed (only blankets).
The sauna does not look very clean.

We had an excellent visit at the Chateau de Coudre. We stayed for two nights and will hopefully be back again. The food at the restaurant was delightful. Chef Marina's menu was different and varied. The view of Geneva Lake was beautiful.
