“Great Island, good resort”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2010

This is a great resort, below are the highlights:

Check-in; Smooth and uneventful, the hotel staff is very efficient

Rooms: we originally had an ocean view room and were upgraded to a one bedroom suite. The rooms are well appointed and comfortably sized, with a desk that allows wired internet connection plus a separate sitting area with a couch, the bathroom was huge with separate bathtub & shower. The only negative about the room was the bed; it was way too soft, just a piece of foam. The linens are great and the bed was fine after there was a piece of plywood between the mattress and box springs. The a/c worked great, my wife likes to keep the room just warmer than a deep freeze.

Internet: There is wi-fi available in the lobby and at the pool, in your room there is only an ethernet connection available, plus the use is not free. I think it cost us about $70 for the week.

Restaurants: We only ate at two restaurants on site: Calypso and the Bar. The food is fine, not too bland and the variety was mixed enough to keep us coming back. We were on the all-inclusive plan but ate out quite a few times. We visited Reggae Beach twice and Mr. X's Shiggity Shack and would recommend both for a good meal.

Getting around: renting a car is a must have. The roads are pretty decent, driving is on the left side of the road and most of the cars are right hand drive, it is easy to acclimate to and traffic is pretty light. We rented our car from Hertz whcih is in the business center onsite at the Marriot, all they had was a micro car or the midsize Nissan Almera; which is what we rented. It was almost worn out but only cost us $330 for the week

Things to do: we spent two days on the beach at Reggae Beach Bar & Restaurant- this is cool place to hang out. They have great food, beach chairs, water sports rentals and the highlight is Wilbur the pig and the monkey/goat cage. My son spent hours playing with and teasing Oliver the vervet monkey; he is in a large outdoor cage with Mocha the goat. The monkey is a nut, watch your sunglasses he will take them of your face in a flash. We also spent a day shopping at Porte Zante, this is a large newer area close to the cruise ship port that houses most of the tourist shopping: jewelery, souveneirs, cigars and alcolhol stores. We also spent a Tursday night at the Shiggity Shack; what a blast, this the night that the "awesome fire man" does his act with fire like a circus act. The food was excellent and the bonfire on the beach was a nice touch as well.

Golf: we played two rounds at the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club which is managed by the Marriot. The course has a great layout, the fairways are lush, the greens are some of the best I have ever seen in the Caribbean. Holes 15, 16 & 17 are on the Atlantic Ocean and make the round, the views are incredible.

Casino: I spent four nights in the onsite casino and had a blast, they have all of the usual table games, the dealers were great to interact with and they were not afraid to hand out the chips. Drinks are free and so are cigars or cigarettes.

We stayed at the Marriot from July 3-10 which is during the off-season, I really enjoyed the pool with a swim up bar and the beach was large with ample palapas to get shade under, the beach vendors can be a hassle but were all friendly and stopped pitching their wares after a simple no thank you. We will return again to this resort in the future, it is a great place for couples or families to relax and have a great time. When the sun goes down your options are pretty limited after dinne;, drinking, socializing or gambling were all I could find to do.

My boyfriend and I visited the Marriott Hotel and Casino May 1-8, 2010. We were expecting a wonderful vacation, especially after all of the positive reviews on Trip Advisor. Unfortunately, that was not what we experienced.

I would say that the facilities at the Marriott, with exception of the gym and the casino, are in complete disrepair and for the most part down right ugly. There is peeling paint everywhere, the fountains are all drained, the pools are in serious need of cleaning, none of the facilities at the spa were working, the hotel rooms looked like they were last updated 30 years ago, and nothing is clean.

We could have written off issues with the facilities if the service had been fantastic. But unfortunately, that also was REALLY lacking. We've traveled extensively in the Caribbean where service is typically at 'island pace,' but it's certainly always friendly. I have never seen staff go so far out of their way to be unaccomodating. From the managers, to the front desk, to the pool staff, to room service and in the restaurants. Not only were these people unfriendly and slow, but we genuinely got the feeling that we were a real burden to them. They were so caught up in having conversations with their friends and sitting around relaxing that they didn't have time to pour drinks or answer questions. It really made for an unpleasant time.

On top of poor facilities and poor service, we also were shaken down by several Marriott employees while we were there....which was unlike anything I'd ever seen. Make sure when you get in a cab with a Marriott driver or any other driver, that you know exactly what you're going to be charged. A Marriott driver took us to a beach several miles from the hotel and grabbed our belongings and wouldn't let us out until we paid her $50. I am also fairly certain that one of the maids stole an expensive ring that I forgot to put in the safe one day when we were at the beach. Truly, something is wrong with the way this hotel is being run.

I have voiced all of my concerns to the general manager of the hotel and to Marriott's corporate office. In response, the St. Kitts Marriott has sent me a coupon for a 4 night hotel stay. They didn't respond to a single issue that I mentioned; just sent the 'coupon.' I would NEVER waste my money and go back there again and you shouldn't either.

Take your money and go to the US or British Virgin Islands where they have MUCH better beaches and incredible hotels and service!!!!

We loved St. Kitts. Hotel was very good to excellent in all aspects, and appeared to clearly be best choice on island. Great facilities, nice casino. Hotel is on the Atlantic side of the island, so the water is rougher, and Sunset is best seen from the other side (Caribbean side) of the island. That was OK because it is an easy walk to Timothy Beach to see the beautiful Sunsets. Excellent very casual sunset dining at Timothy Beach at Cathy's Oceanview beach bar & grill. Hotel dining excellent. Also recommend dining at Serendipity in town. This island is a bit more laid back and less developed than say St. Thomas or Grand Cayman. Paid a taxi driver to take the island tour, worked wonderfully. We enjoyed the ferry ride to the neighboring island of Nevis, this is a must (even if you don't get off the ferry boat). Did not enjoy the town at Nevis, but did experience that island's beauty with a tour.

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for 7 nights. We are in our mid 20's and wanted a romantic/adventure vacation. The hotel itsself is nice and the location is great -- amazing snorkeling right off of the beach, but the food and service is terrible. We did not have even a mediocre meal at the hotel our entire stay and more importantly, the gross, expensive food made us VERY ILL on several occassions. By the end of the trip we figured out that it was the extemely expensive breakfast buffet that was making us sick. If you go here I would not recommend eating the buffet, stick to the made to order items or the bagels from the cafe.

Also, when we arrived, the room was not clean -- the last people's used coffee cups and trash were still in the room. The issue was cleared up by the end of the day, though, after a call to the front desk.

The Volcano Hike was the best part of this trip for my husband and I. We booked the trip through the hotel and it was AMAZING!!! This is a must do if you are going to St. Kitts!

Great family vacation spot, clean, safe, very friendly...this was our third trip and we have vacationed - sailed all of the BVI's and many islands in the Caribean, and we love St. Kitts. Must eat at Sprat Net, excellent frsh seafood and not expensive- picnic tables and okay service, but food is amazing.

Also, use Rafel as a driver (Empress Taxi) he is great with the kids, very friendly and honest.

Fishing go with "Sam the Man" also good with kids and you will catch fish!!!!

Overall we really liked this hotel. It has almost everything you would want in a island destination resort style hotel. It is on the beach.with lots of connecting pools. Our room faced the courtyard and the ocean beyond. Our terrace was very large and a wonderful bonus. The main staff in the lobby were teriffic.

My complaints are that some of the other staff were very friendly and helpful but some of the staff were extremely unfriendly and sullen. So I never knew what to expect when going to a bar, restaurant, business center, towel shed, etc. Also, when we first arrived in our room it was clean and fresh but the daily house cleaning was average and not very thorough.

In addition to the taxes there is a 10% service charge on almost everything including the room charge, so the room is 10% more than is quoted. They charge $15/day for internet which is pretty outrageous.

In spite of those negatives, I really did like this resort.

Large resort on the Atlantic Ocean, beautiful pools and multiple restaurants. Our 2 BR villa was perfect. Fully equipped with nice balcony overlooking pool. Grocery shopping required a $10 cab ride to town. Vehicle was not necessary as taxis were abundant and reasonably priced. Generally $25-30 per hour for a tour of island. We loved our driver "Sweet Pea". There is a taxi stand about 200 yds from the Marriott or the doorman will call from the queue. When leaving St. Kitts remember the airport ticketing area is hotter than Hades, wear something cool.
