“Out of their depth”
Reviewed August 19, 2012

Thomlinson's, at last an eating place in picturesque Rothbury with a bright and airy interior totally devoid of so much as a trace of faded chinz and whose walls are mercifully unadorned with pictures of idyllic hunting scenes of a by-gone era!
Inevitable then that we wouldn't be the only hungry visitors eager to sample the delights of their comprehensive, if predictable menu, on a fine August day.  Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that this newish 'kid on the block' still had a lot to learn and was woefully unprepared for a weather-related increase in demand. Extra staff, temporarily liberated from their more normal positions behind sweeping brushes, kitchen sinks and 'the scenes' generally, were, understandably, unable to improve the chaotic situation with their bewildered, hap-hazard approach to their new 'front of house' roles.
After a patient wait of more than double the projected waiting time promised by the manager/owner, and having been ignored by the cleaner/waitress in favour of a couple of new arrivals, an approach was made to the afore-mentioned manager only to be met with a display of extreme churlishness which, despite a touchingly sincere attempt by the young dish-washer/waiter to defend his out-of-depth boss, prompted our immediate departure.
Though critical in its content, this review, based on the experience of three generations of a particular family, is not meant to deter future potential customers from visiting Thomlinson's.  Members of our party were not lacking in sympathy for what might have been a unique/unusual situation but a more vigorous and professional system to ensure customers are dealt with in accordance with their order of arrival is a must to avoid future customers experiencing the degree of frustration and humiliation felt by ourselves.

This bike friendly cafe saved my bacon today whilst cycling through Northumberland . Having suffered a double blow out descending into rothbury their stock of puncture repair kits was a true blessing. Nothing was a problem and the staff went out of their way to help. All too often we all experience shoddy service, these operators should pay a trip to Tomlinsons to see how to provide quality service. The place is very tastefully designed and the menu looked superb. Thank you and well done on setting such high standards of customer care.

We have recently stopped off in rothbury after a good walk close by and decided to have a quick meal before heading back a jacket pot with coronation chicken was very nice , the service was very good and a feeling of a nice warm relaxed atmosphere . Would recommend for sure if we are ever there again we would stop for food again.

This is a lovely place for breakfast, morning coffee or lunch - we think the best in Rothbury. There's a selection of newspapers so you can really sit and relax - and wait for the sun to come out!.

I have never stayed in the bunkhouse but use the cafe on a regular basis, I dont have a dog but they do allow them and this must be a boon to those who do have their pets with them and dont want to leave them in the car when they visit Rothbury. The staff are friendly and attentive and the food is always well cooked and presented with care. A varied menu with daily specials is available. The home made cakes are delicious but I can also recommend the sauteed mushrooms on toast and the poached eggs and smoked salmon on toast. My son loves their nachos with cheese and all the portions are generous. A good atmosphere and there is always a nice welcome from the staff even when they are busy. The surroundings are clean and airy with wooden floors and tables with comfortable chairs.

I didn't use the bunk house facilities but me, my wife, my 2 year old soon and my Gran called in for refreshments after a nice walk around the village, the new owners have put a lot of work into the place (it used to be a filthy car parts shop) its very clean, simply but effectively decorated, friendly staff and very welcoming.

Its not designed to accommodate toddlers however they were more than happy for us to be there and gave my little boy a "special"bowl for his ice cream!

I would certainly recommend them to anyone!

Since when were bunkhouses smart and chic? Music on Sunday afternoon from @haguemusic.

Very recommended cafe for cyclists, walkers, relaxers with tasty honest food. Returned twice already!

Free wifi and a nice welcome.

Did not stay here - but would!
