Reviewed April 28, 2009

Tim Bateman and Belinda Carpenter have renovated Mainstone House over several years and the results are impressive. My room was spacious and bright with wide views of Rothbury's main street and green. The bed was agreeably firm and the shower room had high-quality fittings. No TV, but a good selection of modern fiction, which suited me fine. There's a comfortable sitting room with several sofas, a woodburner and plenty of maps and guidebooks.

Breakfast was at a modern refectory-style table. I had deluxe muesli and a selection of the cooked items on offer, which were appetizing and came in ample quantities. Jam and marmalade were home made and the cafetiere coffee was first rate.

Tim and Belinda are helpful hosts and the house has a relaxed, congenial feel. I stayed there during a cycling trip and it's a notably cyclist-friendly place. Tim has led Land's End to John o' Groats tours and offers mountain biking breaks based on Mainstone House. But as well as being a good centre for cycling and walking it would also be suitable for more leisurely exploration of Northumberland. Rothbury itself is an attractive small town and the coast, the Cheviots and Hadrian's Wall are all within easy range. Besides the b&b accommodation there's an adjacent, self-contained cottage for hire.
