“Just what we needed.”

We've just returned from a lovely holiday here. The hotel was spotless, room really nice, even for the 3 of us. Advise that you pay extra for the sea view. Staff were very helpful and the meals a good selection. All being well we will return next year.

The Playa Azul is typical of the functional, no frills, mass market business that help those with limited budgets enjoy a very reasonable stay in great locations. And of its type it does its job very well indeed and has some attributes which place it near the top of its class. That said, to give it any more than an average rating is difficult because it lacks the fundamental homeliness of a personally run business.

Top of the list is are the staff. They work really hard to make your stay a great one. Without exception they are best bit of the Playa Azul. Cannot be faulted.

It has obviously had a refurbishment/make-over in the last couple of years and that's great right now as it still has a sheen but it is just getting a bit worn in places. We had booked a twin and a single and been promised bath, shower and balconies with both. Neither had a bath and the single had no balcony. The twin had sea view and the fittings were above average for this class of hotel. Even so the beds were a little hard. Fairly spacious in general the bathroom and particularly the shower unit were on the small side. The shower cubicle in particular was too small and in reality dangerous. Turning or even moving meant an accidental knock on the tap could deliver scaldingly hot water. Be careful!

Food is served buffet style but this is overstating the canteen nature of the catering. The food itself is a little repetitive but is of fair quality and well cooked. Strangely we found that lunch menus were more varied and tasty. As half-board customers we eventually swapped our evening meal for lunches, allowing us to experience the other restaurants in town by night. This makes a fair compromise between the all-inclusive trap and having to eat out constantly. Upgrading to all-inclusive costs 17e per person per day from half board. We found it very easy to eat and drink in town during the evening for about 20e per head with much more choice and better quality food. And the all-inclusive bar stops serving at 23:00hrs.

The pool area is very clean and well serviced. Sunbeds are limited and the usual towel "reservations" are made from very early despite hotel warnings not to do so. Some areas round the pool are also no smoking, these warnings are also ignored by a few customers.

Which brings me to the reason I would not stay here again. The hotel rules are clear and posted clearly in several languages. The hotel does nothing to enforce them meaning the minority spoil it for the majority. Similarly when a hotel charges for something freely available elsewhere, in this case Wi-Fi, it has to work. The Wi-Fi in the Playa Azul is appalling and only works near reception. Even then drop out is regular. More reason to use the free signals from almost every other place in town.

If you like variety and have the budget the Playa Azul makes a reasonable base in this resort. If you are keen on All-Inclusive deals it is probably one of the better options.

Room Tip: Room 312 has no balcony.

We spent a great 10 days here, with mixed feelings about the complex. The good bits - the staff are friendly, helpful and courteous - couldn't have been better! The complex is pristine - very clean and well kept. The drinks, including the cava, were ok, with a decent range to choose from! We did a couple of trips, to Mahon and Citadella, which were both worth a visit. The downside - the food is not great! There's actually nothing wrong with it - its just not very exciting - its a bit 'canteen' - in 10 days we were served hake 8 times! Its ok if you don't mind the same kind of thing over and over! And because the dining hall is air conditioned they don't open the windows, so it feels a bit enclosed! The other issue is the beach - lovely - but you have to walk up and down a steep flight of steps, which on a hot day is a real problem - take lots of water if you attempt it - not good! We enjoyed ourselves, but wouldn't go again!

Room Tip: The sea view is excellent

The staff were great start to finish. The food was ok you wouldnt go hungry and its very typical stuff catering for different nationalities.
We were put in a room on arrival behind 2 palm trees no sun at all. Quick visit to reception and a new room sorted.
The hotel is small so never had to queue at the bar or restaurant. The restaurant was quite cafe like in its set up and the entertainment was not so good but didnt matter to us as we didnt go to be entertained!
A lot of steps down to the beach but its worth a trip down.
Probably wouldnt go back but thats because the resort hasn't much to offer and not a reflection on the hotel.
Get up early if you want a sunbed!

Well me and my friend stayed at this hotel straight on from staying in Arenal D'en Castell. The hotel itself is lovely, super clean, nicely decorated, friendly staff however the food is horrendous. There's hardly any choice what so ever, it's always cold and it's really repetitive. I'm also not a particularly fussy eater either! I've been all inclusive many times, from 5* to 2* and I have to say the food at the 2* I stayed at was ten times better than this.
The niceness of the hotel and the food just don't match up! I think if they stepped up their game a little with the food it would be a much better hotel in general.
I wouldn't personally stay here again because of the food situation, as we've paid over £400 and are still having to eat out every night because of it.
But for those people who don't mind bad food then the hotel is lovely :)

Just not for us!

Having had a fantastic 10 days at the Playa Azul in September 2012 (see my previous review), we decided to return for another 10 days at the end of June 2013, hoping to repeat the experience.

Although we still enjoyed the holiday, the Playa Azul is starting to look a little tired, and in need of a makeover. Difficult to pin this on any single thing, but the carpets in the public areas (reception and corridors) are stained in places, and really need replacement or deep cleaning; the bannister on the stairs was obviously not repainted over the winter, when the Hotel is closed, and it was impossible to run a bath without having a shower too - a lot of little things that add up to an establishment in need of some TLC.

For the first 7 days of our stay, the air conditioning wasn't working, and when we initially reported this to reception on Day 1, the response was that it was a nice day, so we should go to the beach!!

Overall, the staff were great - the cleaners worked tirelessly, and the Restaurant / Cafe staff were all very pleasant and efficient. In terms of the food on offer, you could always find something that suited your taste, but some of the dinner choices were a little obscure, to say the least - the grey mousse was one to avoid, as was the chocolate flavoured custard with digestive biscuits floating on the top!

Perhaps having stayed there before, we may have expected too much, and another couple we spoke to, who were visiting for the first time, were very impressed with the range and quality of food on offer, so it can't have been too bad!

From 2014, it looks as though all breaks here will be 'All Inclusive', which will definitely change the dynamic of the guests, and will do little to secure the future of the small bars and restaurants in the resort, who will lose out on business as a result.

I love the resort of Cala en Porter, and the location of the Hotel, but I'm not sure whether a 3rd visit is likely to happen.

Just returned from a 7 day all inclusive holiday at this lovely hotel. The hotel's location is excellent just across the road from the beach and the bus stop, and very close to a number of bars and restaurants. Our room was spacious and the bathroom was big and looked as though it had been recently refurbished. Everywhere including all the public areas were kept spotlessly clean. All the staff were very polite and always greeted with a smile. We thought the food was good with plenty of choice at all meal times. There was entertainment on 2 nights in the week which we enjoyed and seemed to go down well with everyone (majority of guests appeared to be English and Spanish) Our only criticism would be not enough sunbeds. Some people were 'reserving' with towels before breakfast and then not appearing till after lunch.
