“Excellent!”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

We were looking for a quiet, comfortable, self-catering hotel and we really scored with Royal Sun Resort! The location was ideal and the price was great. High up above the noise of town (although Los Gigantes is relatively tame) and on the 5th floor we were above pretty much everything. The rooms were built as flats for purchase so they are much bigger than your average hotel suite. The terraces were huge and have glass balconies so you can see everything whilst sitting down. We had an expansive view of the ocean and the huge cliffs that give the town it's name. The pool was clean and comfortable.

The kitchens were good, but lacking in a few basic utensils (no spatula, no cooking spoon - we had to use a pasta spoon!). Also, I'm sure every guest has to buy salt and pepper and only uses a minuscule amount. Would it kill the hotel staff to just leave the rest in the room for the next guests? We didn't eat at the restaurant (as vegetarians, the pickings were slim, which is why we self-cater in Spain anyway). The mini-market on site was good. The Venezuelan lady who worked there was super friendly and fun to chat with.

My only other minor quibble is that they charge to use the hotel safe. I know this is not uncommon in Spain, but it's incredibly tacky. Also, be sure to put up your do-not-disturb sign up or else housekeeping staff may knock at 9 am!

There were a few children staying there, but it didn't seem like a particularly good place for children (or teens/20s age groups). More of a couples place for sure.

Playa Las Arenas is a long walk, but a great classic black sand beach with all the amenities. Part way there, in Puerto Santiago, there is a fabulous snorkeling spot. We named it "Snorkle Cove" but I don't know if it has a name. Also, it is well worth going up to El Teide national park and hiking around in the lava rocks! Very cool! Part of the drive is a little scary (I would drive myself, not take a bus!), but most of it is totally fine and it's so worth it!

Room Tip: We were happy on the 5th floor.

Staying at the Royal Sun right now, sitting on the Hugh balcony writing this review its 6.45pm and the sun is still out. This hotel was a time share about 12 years ago and it was,fab then and the apartments were made for self catering with all mod cons in them and the balconys are just fantastic with two sun loungers a table and two chairs and a place to hang your towels etc. Staff have been excellent so far Richard one of the managers introduced himself and asked had we just arrived that day and then produced two cold flannels for the back of our neck to cool us down once again the word is perfect. ok it's a bit of a walk into the town but in the morning the sun does not come up first thing so it's a pleasant walk and the cabs back up,are 3 euros. We are on the 3 rd floor and the pool is on the same floor so just a short walk and you can have a quick dip in the pool and a drink if you wish, entertainment guy Alex is very friendly without being pushy always a plus, going for dinner tonight in the restaurant so will update on the food later.

We spent a week at the Royal Sun from 23rd August! We loved this hotel and had a fantastic stay, the staff were brilliant and in particular Richard, one of the Hotel Manager's couldnt have been more helpful and good fun too, always going that extra mile to help and give the personal touch, loved the cold faceclothes to chill you down, what a nice touch! Also Aitor at the pool bar was a lovely guy and took the time to chat and get to know you, makes great cocktails too!

Our room was amazing, we couldnt believe the size of it and the massive balcony overlooking the whole of Los Gigantes with breathtaking views, excellent for a night in watching the sun go down!

The actual resort of Los Gigantes is a great place, retaining charm but also still a lot going on, great area to get out and about in and explore!

Thanks again Royal Sun we will be back! :) xx

Room Tip: We had a room on the fifth floor!

We stayed for 2 weeks at the Royal Sun Resort in July 2014. This was for my wifes 50th birthday and our exciting summer holiday.

We decided to self cater but also tried the lovely hotel cuisine a few times. The room we chose was on the 5th floor offering us a little more privacy on the expansive balcony with spectacular views across the harbour and Los Gigantes.

A note to those who may not like walking the steep hills around the village.... the Royal Sun is practically on top of Los Gigantes, so a certain level of fitness is definitely required. But the taxis from town are cheap eg three euros but agree a price first. The mid day heat in July can be stifling so nice long relaxing rests by the pool or siestas is essential. Sadly the pool can be a bit busy throughout the afternoon but my early morning swims suited me.

A Russian owned hotel, we found most hotel activities catered for the Russian guests. All the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. It was an extremely clean hotel. Thank you Maria and Vlademir especially.

We had a fantastic holiday but there were a few niggles. We felt the music at the pool was unnecessarily loud as you could hear it from our balcony but that could be easily rectified without spoiling the atmosphere at the pool. The design of the apartments also meant that sound carried up from the corridors. It was warm at night so it is good to hear that the hotel is planning to install air conditioning.

Room Tip: The views are spectacular from all the rooms but obviously those higher up do offer more privacy as...

The best view you could imagine, perfect sea view from all apartments. Biggest private terrace we've ever had, spend plenty tanning, relaxing and eating there. Big and clean apartment. Lovely swimming pool area. Placed on a mountain side, with 10 minutes walk down a steep road to a small but lovely town. Think we were the only family not being British or Russian, everyone was very nice, the atmosphere is quiet and relaxing.

We have just arrived back from a two week family holiday staying at the Royal Sun Resort in Los Gigantes. Our party consisted of myself, my husband, our three children (aged 10, 8 and 5) and my parents.

Before travelling we continued to read reviews on trip advisor and were concerned that the photos and reviews showed the hotel in such a positive light that I was too good to be true. However, it was everything we had read about and more!

We stayed in a spacious three bedroom apartment, whilst my parents had their own one bedroom apartment. The accommodation was amazing (please look at our photos) with ample living space, a fully functioning kitchen space and a balcony with panoramic sea views to die for! I have never stayed in accommodation of this quality before. Rooms were meticulously cleaned (as was the rest of the hotel) and towels changed on a daily basis, with fresh bed linen every three days. At the moment the rooms don't have air conditioning but room fans were provided in our apartment and my parents apartment had ceiling fans, which did the trick.

We chose the half board option, but the self catering facilities were of an extremely high standard with a cooker, hob, fridge freezer, microwave, toaster, kettle and even a dishwasher! All crockery and utensils were provided and this enabled us some days to make snacks at lunchtime and have lollies and ice cream for treats. Other days we opted for snacks by the pool purchased from the pool bar. We had the best of both worlds!

Meals in the breakfast area and in the evening in the Regency Restaurant were served overlooking the impressive views of the town, harbour and ocean, just perfect! The food could not be faulted. In the morning we had a continental breakfast buffet with a range of cooked options available to order. The chocolate donuts, hot chocolate and pancakes were a winner with the kids!

Our evening meals were outstanding. The food was delicious and of an extremely high standard. We made several recommendations to other couples to dine there, who weren't actually staying at the hotel. With fantastic food and breathtaking views I would definitely recommend the half board option.

As previously mentioned the pool bar provided a variety of snacks and meals throughout the day, which were reasonably priced and as with the breakfast and evening meals were delicious. Aicor, the barman was a great host!

Alongside the beautiful settings, amazing food and super accommodation there is another key element that sets this hotel apart from other hotels and that is the staff. Nothing was ever too much trouble. Richard, one of the managers was extremely helpful throughout our stay, going that extra mile to ensure we had an excellent holiday. The staff in the bars and restaurants we also friendly and happy to help. A big thank you to Luis, Jose, Jennifer and Jonathan, to mention just a few.

Entertainment was provided throughout the day and evening and we want to give a special mention to Alexander for his energy, enthusiasm and encouragement. He organised games and activities that kept the whole family engaged and entertained from water aerobics, table tennis, water polo and card games. His talents continued into the evening as he became the resident DJ and karaoke compare. There was little need to leave the resort complex as everything we needed was available to us.

The pool area was relatively quiet and there were ample sun loungers available throughout the day. As with the rooms in the hotel the pool area overlooked the town and harbour.

The town of Los Gigantes was picturesque with a beautiful harbour. There were ample shops, bars and restaurants and The walk down to the town was manageable for all family members (especially when we found the shortcuts!) and then we got a taxi back up to the hotel at the cost of 3 euro (make sure you agree that wit the driver beforehand as some tried to overcharge us)

We have nothing but praise for the hotel and its staff. This has been the best family holiday we have been on and we are already planning our return visit.

Room Tip: All rooms have a sea view, but some travel companies charge extra for this. Don't pay it, they a...

Had a wonderful family holiday at this hotel and would highly recommend. The rooms are very spacious, clean and well equipped. We had 3 bedrooms and the balcony was very large with sun loungers, table and chairs and garden.

All the staff were very friendly and helpful and special mention must go to Alex and Agalaf who created a great atmosphere around the pool every day and helped make the holiday special.

Its a great place for a family holiday and will plan to visit again in the future.
