“Good Basic Apartments”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

When we arrived we were allocated a studio apartment, it was very large with separate kitchen and bathroom and in a good position away from the road at the side of the pool but we had booked a one bedroomed apartment. In reception they told us they were fully booked and could only move us in 5 days so they gave us a free safe! When we spoke to the Rep David he dealt with this promptly and although he couldn't move us he gave us 150 Euros compensation which we were happy with.
The studio was OK with adequate utensils and kept clean, we had no problem getting a sun bed by the pool and didn't have to get up early to bag one.
The huge downside of the holiday was that after 3 days my husband came down with the nurovirus that was rife within the resort and spent nearly 3 days in bed. I caught it about 15 minutes before we caught the transport back to the airport so had a terrible journey home and was off work for 2 days.
On hearing this seems to be an ongoing problem at the resort ( in no way do I think that this has anything to do with the apartments as we met people at different accommodations who also had the bug) it may deter us going back next winter.

Good point/s = location and price we paid.
However, we were misguided by the fab reviews on trip advisor from the people who obviously go year after year. There is a 'pecking order' here, the more you go the better room you have and these are pre-allocated meaning us got the worst room and we were also fed up of having to get up at 7am to get a sunbed !! Took us 2 days to get one as wee didn't know this was the procedure!. We had to go to Tipsy to use and pay for their facilities which I may add we're very nice.

Bad points = the micro ants, slamming doors, street noise, pool light shining in our room all night. Old dated and dark room/kitchen.

Would I return.... For the price yes, and of course all the tips to beat the package tour people would come in handy. Alarm set 6am for a sun bed and chipset my own room ! Ideal

The resort is lovely and had lots of nice meals and nights out. Tipsy is good for lunches and snacks, Ck's was was really nice as was the one next door but the ie ext door is more fine dining than a holiday atmosphere. Our favourite place was El Jarden which was at the corner of the square. Food and service both really good.

Room Tip: Not on the road side or ground floor

Just returned from a week at the El Sombrero, our third visit this year. The apartments are spacious, quite dated but kept very clean. It is a quiet location with easy access to the shops/bars etc. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Our only downside this time was the resort had an outbreak of the norovirus which affected many of the couples in the apartments
and also in the Los Gigantes Hotel down the road. Since our return we have discovered it has been a problem for a long time in the resort. This is quite a worry and may deter us from returning. I am not suggesting that the El Sombrero was to blame in any way, it is very difficult to ascertain the cause of the outbreak, but it sure does spoil your holiday.

Just returned from a week at the El Sombrero. Good value for money. Our one bedroom apartment was light, clean and spacious. Staff were friendly and helpful.
The main pool got the sun for most of the day, however, the childrens pool was often in the shade.
Self catering in a foreign country is always an interesting experience. Kitchen utensils were limited in our apartment. One kitchen towel and one tea towel were provided to last the week.
There are several supermarkets close by. The supermarket up the hill past the bus stop is the largest.
Due to the position of the apartments on the one way road system noise is an issue.

Room Tip: Request an apartment away from the road.

Visited end March 2013. Apartments clean and staff cheerful and helpful. Pity about the micro ants but were given an insecticide spray by reception but they just kept coming back. Studio apartment very spacious with separate kitchen was good if you decided to have breakfast in apartment. In morning lots of traffic noise as apartments based on main road into resort. There is a very bad stomach bug rife in Los Gigantes. I along with lots of other people in the apartments got this bug. I was unwell for 3 days. You had to be up very early to get a sunbed. Some days by 8.30 no beds left. Some people did not come out to their bed till after 10.30-11.00 so hogged them from early morning. Did have a good holiday in Los Gi gantes though and as this was a cheap winter break you only get as good as you pay for.

We arrived very tired and were shown to our apartment studio which was surprisingly spacious. Very clean and having a nice view from the balcony.
OK everything was basic but that is what we expected. Well equipped kitchen with kettle & toaster. Car hire available at reception.
You get what you pay for and this was a very good value deal
Pool area not very comfy but adequate. We were told that the pool is to be re-tiled in May.
Los Gigantes is on the doorstep with all the bars and restaurants on hand.
Good sports bars with all football and rugby matches available.
Found 2 supermarkets that sold Australian red wine if your stomach can't take the Spanish wines on offer.
Go to the Los Gigantes hotel at night for very good entertainment. Also the bars and restaurants also have quality singers .Try TJ's bar at the entrance to the hotel. Hector ,Paul & Suzy will make you welcome.

Room Tip: Rooms on the road-front are noisy due to traffic.

We stayed at these apartments at the beginning of January - as we needed a well earned rest after a hectic December and Christmas. Could not praise the staff enough - they all worked very hard particularly Pedro who helped us after we were unable to get into our safe on two occasions!! Lovely pool and sunbathing area which we used nearly every day as we had fantastic weather. Sonia who worked at the pool bar was so friendly and we had some lovely lunches there. The apartments are in a very good position at the top of town where it is quieter than down in the centre but its not too far to walk up the hill at the end of the evening! The bus terminus is directly opposite the apartments and you can purchase a bus pass for 15 euros and use it as much as you like - which we did, particularly in the evening when we wanted a meal in Puerto Santiago for a change. We will definitely be returning next January as it beats those gloomy winter days when all the festivities are over and the English summer seems as eternity away!

Room Tip: first floor poolside rooms have lovely sea views in 2 directions
